The flippy viewfinder is a godsend when shooting over crowds.
It can be, and I was worried that I would miss it when I bought the SL1. But my main concern was weight. I can't carry anything heavy because of back issues and the SL1 with either the kit lens or the 40mm pancake is lighter than the point and shoot it replaced (which had the articulated screen). So far (knocking on wood) I haven't been in a situation where I missed a shot because I didn't have the articulated screen anymore.
I love that pancake lens. I leave it on the camera most of the time, and use it for probably 90% of my shooting.
But really, the only way to know which camera is right for you, OP, is to go somewhere you can pick them up and see which one feels right to you. Everyone has their own reasons for picking the gear they do, and there isn't really a "right" or "wrong" answer to your question.
