T-shirt and Software Questions

I've only used to t-shirt transfer paper twice. Both times the images came out a little brown (did I iron it too long) and they cracked when I washed them. What did I do wrong?

What software do you reccomend for a beginner designer?

What kind of transfer paper did you use??? I use avery and have never had this problem...I also use the avery software Design Pro 5 (free download from the avery site). Did you wash them inside out??? Did you wash the shirt (no fabric softner) prior to ironing on the transfer??? These are some of the potential problems that I can think of....
