The first two weeks have definitely been much more ballet heavy than I ever remember in the past. We're loving it here.

I cannot believe the one dancer actually came from Cincinnati Ballet & did not present himself much better than he did. Clearly he has some skills, but has zero idea how to demonstrate that.

Ordinarily the guy w/ the wheel would have annoyed me because it's just not dance, even Mary said the same. It was great to get a chance to see it. It was unique, it was mesmerizing, even loved his music. I loved it most because he was so genuine and sincere. His presence was amazing.

I couldn't decide if the Cincinnati Ballet guy was some kind of set-up or not. Maybe there was a lack of ridiculous this year so they created some...it IS a TV show and Nigel is very clear that they are creating a show not just a competition.

I really enjoyed the hoop guy. He had something extremely special. He obviously knew he wasn't right for the show but I'm glad I got to see him. In his pre-audition package I thought that it was going to be annoying...but it wasn't.

Loved the too-old twins. I expected them to be horrible and they actually could dance.

I like the girl with the unsupportive parents. I'm interested in seeing how she does in Vegas. She is holding back and I'm hoping they can bring out something more from her.

There was one of the people cut in choreography that I had wished made it though and I can't remember who it was.

I'm thinking scholarships.. dance teacher saw something in her, found out her situation, and took her under her wing. Happens all the time. But, people have been known to exaggerate..

My guess is that he just does not have enough experience with choreography. When I used to do ballet, I always wanted to audition for SYTYCD. But, I was discouraged because the only thing remotely close to ballet shown was "lyrical" or "contemporary". No one (that they showed on audition shows) danced variations from Paquita or Le Corsaire. To this day, Danny Tidwell has been my favorite dancer. Maybe I am just partial since he had been to my school for a few performance previously. He truly has talent.

All I have to say is, in the dance world, you can be in one day and out the next. It's an extremely tough and competitive art form. Glad to see ballet taking its turn in the spot light (i.e. Breaking Pointe, the YAGP documentary, and SYTYCD).

Saw Newsies, The Musical last night and was pleasantly surprised to find out that four SYTYCD alumni were in the ensemble; Jess LeProtto, Evan Kasprzak, Thayne Jasperson and .... Alex Wong! By the way he danced, he definitely has recovered from that achilless injury. Just sorry we won't get to see him on SYTYCD again as a competitor.

I just read your post on the Broadway thread -- with envy. If I was Alex I'd steer clear of SYTYCD after injuring the other achilles last summer on the same move just before he was to come back to dance on the show. He was such a great dancer & I sure hope he is back in full form, although several dance teachers I've talked with said he will never be the same.

I'm no dance expert, but it didn't look that way to me. He was busting some pretty good moves last night. And he was front and center in a number of the dance numbers.

I am so happy to hear that. He was so extraordinarily talented on the show & obviously loved dance with every part of him it would be so sad to lose that. One of DD's ballet teachers and several from her ballet forum last summer had said it was next to impossible for him to recover to the point he had been, even with tearing just the one. They were all really concerned about him last summer especially since the word had just come out he had torn the other one. Sure hope I get to see him in person someday, and Newsies also.

No one is worse than a strictly old-school Vaganova teacher that does not allow for water breaks and only pays attention to sticks in class. In the dance world, you're going to have your mixture of teachers. Not everyone can be pleasant.
The best idea is to just take what they are giving you and analyze it yourself.

Sometimes it makes no sense why they would put a pure hip-hop dancer through to vegas - you know there is a very large chance that person can't do anything but and then require someone with a more traditional skill set to do choreography.

My idea?

The choreography should be two rounds - one hip hop and one a more traditional dance form. You have to work against your style to get your ticket to Vegas.

I only saw episodes 2 and 3, but did they feature any ballroom performers?

Oh I don't know about that - Twitch comes to mind immediately, and there have been others whose names escape me this early in the morning who were hip-hop who went very far in the competition.

I personally get sick of seeing all the contemporary dancers. I feel like I've seen one, I've seen them all. Yes, some are more moving than others, but the basic moves are all the same, and it seems like they are mostly featuring them this year.

To answer your question, I have yet to see one ballroom performer featured, but I did miss last week's show.

I was saying last night while I was watching quirky girl that Sonya would LOVE to get ahold of her. I also think the hip-hop to piano guy was fantastic.

What did you think of the Selena Gomez backpack guy? I sort-of think he was put through mostly on personality and entertainment factor rather than skill.

I agree.

I think Twitch was decent at learning the new styles, but his hands and feet were never right, if I recall correctly, and that is so distracting to me. You have to have basic technique AND something interesting.

That's the problem with many of the contemporary dancers - they have good technique, but you can't tell them apart from one another. I thought the woman with the grandma there was put through only because of grandma. I didn't get anything special from her performance.

I did think the three housemates were great.... for what they do. I would have liked to see them work with a partner before being put through. If they get paired up with a contemporary dancer in Vegas, they could hurt the partner's chances if they can't get it together.

I would love to be pleasantly surprised, however, it doesn't happen that often on this show.

I haven't watched last nights show yet but I disagree about the hip-hoppers. Like it was said, Twitch and Joshua especially but Legacy and all the Quest Crew guys were all B-Boys that made it onto the show & did well.

I have not seen any ballroom dancers featured. Traditionally I don't think the ball room dancers have faired that well in competition. The Schwimmer's obviously, Pasha, Heidi, Chelsea but after about season 4 or 5 they really have gotten away from casting ballroom dancers.
