SYTYCD - So You Think You Can Dance Season 9

It's so hard to post here while the show is airing since I want to soak it all in...but I have to say - I am loving the top 20! :cool1:

And oh my, the Travis piece was incredible.

I loved both of Sonia's numbers too.

I think the selection of Alexa was a given all though I think it as a terrible decision - reminds me of the blonde that made it when she was cut last year. Way too many chances when they gave other none.

Love all 3 ballet dancers and hope they remain on the show - technical excellence combine with beautiful expression.

Mia Michaels s back.

They were fabulous!

Wow. Just wow. The choreographers will have their work cut out for them, because this group can dance!:banana:

Missed the show so what styles made top 20?

I missed some of it too, but I saw ballroom, ballet, jazz, and a mixed bag group with a mixed martial arts guy and Cyrus (not sure what his style is called).

I love, loved Travis's piece, as well as both of Sonia's. The MM one left me feeling underwhelmed. :confused3

Was it just me, or did anyone else notice the Mickeys on the floor in lighs during the end of some of the trio performances? I mentioned it to DH, and he says, "We can never get away from Disney, can we? Mickey stalks us!" <insert evil laugh>

You must be referring to Ryan, since I think Ryan and Alexa went up against one another for results last year.

I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't too pleased with Alexa being chosen over Aubrey. There was just something about Aubrey. However, I do think Alexa can dance very well. The problem has been her facial expressions, or lack thereof. She looks like she is dead...and has admitted to over-thinking her steps too much. However, she looked really good tonight. And I loved the heavy eye makeup. It gave her face some character.

Also very happy to see Mia back - LOVE her! :thumbsup2

I loved both of Sonia's numbers too.

Sonia's a beast. The show just wouldn't be the same without Sonia. :worship:

Sure can! :thumbsup2

Nice to see Nigel give big props to Cyrus for pushing harder when his buddies gave up. :thumbsup2

Also, since there will not be a results show this year, 2 winners will now be chosen; a top guy and top girl!

Now if we can get rid of these celebrity judges and put the choreographers back on the panel, we'll be doing much better...:goodvibes

What does everyone think of the top 20 so far?

I just tuned in and caught Nigel's critique of Janelle (Belly Dancer) and her partner's (?) dance. Was the choreographer new? Nigel sounded a bit hard on him...

Pretty sure it was a new choreographer, Nigel was saying that he didn't really play up their strengths so that the audience would have a hard time judging them properly.

Poor guy - I could see the disappointment in his face.

I thought the bathtub dance was beautiful...and disagree with Nigel about the emotion being lost.

No, the choreographer was Christopher Scott. He did the dentist number also tonight. Very underwhelming. We were shocked. He did the group opener a couple weeks ago w/ the desks & his dance company has been on the show in the past -- the League of Extraordinary Dancers. Twitch, Legacy & possibly Hok performed w/ them, as did Christopher himself -- incredible, incredible. His numbers tonight????? I don't get it.

Nigel has criticized Nappy Tabs more than once and former golden boy Wade Robson hasn't been back since Nigel critiqued one of his routines.

IMO I'd like to see Nigel give Sean Cheesman a dose of reality & chase him away -- and enough w/ the Bollywood already, too.

Wasn't that a Christopher Scott number? He has been around for a season or two and my hazy recollection is that he has been somewhat hit-or-miss with his choreography.

totally irrelevant to the thread, well mostly irrelevant.
I don't watch the show, but watched it last year when they had the statue episode and that was breathtaking. The choreographer of that dance deserved an award, it was moving and so, so beautiful.

Very, very disappointing night as far as the dancers in the bottom three. Two wonderful dancers were cut.

I hope they will come back w/ all fabulous routines after two weeks off. So very, very happy to see Stacy Tookey and Mandy Moore back. Ray Leeper was another unexpected treat -- although I could have done w/o the garter belt on that costume, made it verge on trashy instead of just sensual and sexy.

Anybody happen to watch the Oxygen show All The Right Moves with Travis Wall? As he tries to form his company, he brings in a number of SYTYCD alumni, including Melonie Moore.

Finally watched the recording. Kind of disappointed. Show was choppy & it seems like they're going for the reality show-type drama. I'd like to see more dancing & more of the dancers.

Nigel from SYTYCD has a new show starting this month on Ovation -- A Chance to Dance. Don't know very much about it but I'm hopeful.

I saw New York City buses advertising another Lythgoe show, forgot what it was called, but it looked like it was a singing competition. Funny thing is, I could not find anywhere on the ad that showed what channel it was going to be on?

You're right, it appears to be more of a reality type show, but I liked some of the behind the scenes stuff about what it takes to get a dance company together.

I'm not sure how widely the Ovation channel is available, but I'm happy to see a channel like it attempting to give it a go, particularly since they seem to be trying to do some original programming. It looks like they're attempting to be a little like A&E and/or Bravo when they started. I'm kind of curious because it looks like this show might focus on ballet.

The aspects about the start-up of the dance company itself are very interesting. Somehow I sense some major drama ahead and I think the show will emphasize that.

Coincidentally, I just got this in the mail from a SYTYCD blog I subscribe to:

Chance to Dance on Ovation Premieres August 17th

In case you missed it previously, we had the chance to attend the auditions of a new show produced by Nigel Lythgoe called Chance to Dance. Since then we’ve decided to cover the full season of Chance to Dance here on Pure SYTYCD.

For those dance fans like us, Chance to Dance premieres on Ovation TV on Friday, August 17th at 7 PM PT / 10 PM ET. You can also follow Chance to Dance on Facebook as well. Word is that they’ll be streaming the show on Facebook as well. I’ll try and get more details about the online stream and share that once I get it.

For those who don’t know anything about Chance to Dance, I think this video does a pretty good job showing a short preview of the show:
Also, Allison Holker is a part of Chance to Dance and recorded this video where she offers some really great dance tips:
I’m excited to see how this show comes together. As it says in the top video, the dancers that make it through Chance to Dance will have the opportunity to go on tour with the SYTYCD dancers. Very cool!

Tonight is being dedicated to Mia Michaels!!!

They are also performing some of the best routines of past seasons!

After a two week hiatus, tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance returns and tributes a very special lady: the show’s most prolific choreographer, Mia Michaels. The three-time Emmy winner will be feted for the entire two hours, as the seven pairs of dancers remaining will each perform one of her classic dances from previous seasons — everything from her famous “Bench” dance to “The Butt Piece.”

“They contacted me, and they were like, ‘We have an idea. We want this to happen,’” Michaels tells EW about how the episode came together. “It was quite an honor, and I was like, ‘Let’s do this.’ It’s definitely turning out to be one of my most favorite seasons, especially now because I’ve had a personal attachment to the dancers now that are doing this work. It’s really cool.”
In addition to Michaels’ seven most memorable dances being performed — all of which are previewed below by Michaels, with embedded videos of the original performances — the choreographer has also constructed the night’s group number, which will feature all the dancers. “It has the potential to be one of my favorites. Hopefully it will be,” Michaels says of tonight’s group piece. “For me, the piece is about the long-distance relationship I’m in right now. I have been for the past two years, with someone who is the most amazing man. The problem is the long distance, and it’s very difficult in this space. So the stage is filled with so much love, almost like, it’s Prince Charming everywhere. But there’s ropes involved, and the rope represents the only connection we have, which is the telephone. The girls are tied up by one arm, so they can’t fully love with both arms because they’re stuck because of the distance.”

AH - Mia's piece on addiction kills me everytime. While I loooove Kayla/Kupono's interpretation - Cole/Lindsay did a great job, best of the night imo. And I agree with Mary; where Kupono's character was more sinister, Cole was destructive. Very different, but both equally good. I just wish Lindsay wore makeup like Kayla did with the smoky eyes. Cole looked amazing - reminded of Bruce Lee in The Crow...

Overall, wonderful show. Looking forward to the All-Stars joining next week!!!
