SYTYCD - So You Think You Can Dance Season 9

AH - Mia's piece on addiction kills me everytime. While I loooove Kayla/Kupono's interpretation - Cole/Lindsay did a great job, best of the night imo. And I agree with Mary; where Kupono's character was more sinister, Cole was destructive. Very different, but both equally good. I just wish Lindsay wore makeup like Kayla did with the smoky eyes. Cole looked amazing - reminded of Bruce Lee in The Crow...

Overall, wonderful show. Looking forward to the All-Stars joining next week!!!

To be honest, the Addiction routine was my favorite SYTYCD routine of all time, and I was disappointed in it tonight. I didn't see Cole's deadness in the eyes as him being more destructive, I saw it as him being more dead in the eyes. I vastly preferred Kupono, and I have to say how disappointed I am in the dancers that went home tonight. VERY disappointed, actually--- because my favorite female dancer was eliminated and I think she shouldn't have been. :-(

I liked it. I think Lindsay was too "cute" in the addiction piece. Too clean. Kayla looked like a hot mess in it...Lindsay looked cute.

I loved seeing all the Mia Michaels routines again but I'm not sure I liked any of them equally or better than the first time.

If Amelia is the female who was cut that was your favorite, my youngest DD is right there with you. She was not happy & may not be very interested in watching the rest of the season.

Mary Murphy and Radio Nate summed up what I felt about last night's Addiction performance -- Kapono was much more sinister in the face and I felt much more menaced. Lindsey was just too cute in her expressions and I think it translated to her movement here and there. She wasn't enslaved enough. They danced wonderfully and Cole's expression did give it an interesting quality in a different way, but IMO nothing tops the original.

I was very surprised to find the bench piece so moving. I thought Travis was going to be too much to live up to. Chehon obviously was impressive enough to get a standing job offer from the Ballet Boyz. Travis' performance quality edged him out, but Chehon for sure matched him in technique.

I wish the director would learn how to present dance numbers for the television audience. I think the group # was probably MUCH better than what we got to see.

But addiction doesn't care about you. It's heartless and cold and will take you if you let it in. So I preferred Cole's take on it.

I thought Nigel was unfair in his comparisons with some pieces. It's not a redo but a reinterpretation sometimes.

I think Nigel wanted Amelia gone the last couple weeks and was waiting for her to be in the bottom. I don't think Lindsey did much other than be attractive to Nigel.

Addiction takes on different forms...that's why I enjoyed both. :thumbsup2

Kupono was manipulative and cunning, whereas, Cole was rigid and void of emotion...

So what did everyone think of last night?

I keep liking Eliana more and more. Wow. She is really so good compared to the other girls. We're not big Whitney fans (certainly not like Nigel), and didn't think either she or Tiffany were as good as performing last night as they got credit for.

As for the guys, well, I love them all! :lovestruc Cyrus is not the best dancer, far from it. But he is just so darn likable, he might win.

My picks are Eliana and Chehon. Chehon has been a little held back as far as showing some performance quality, but he has been excellent. Last night he all but opened a vein up on the stage. I actually got choked up.

All of the top eight brought something to the table. I suspect Cyrus is going to win. He's very likeable and very talented, but to be fair he's nowhere in the leagues dance-wise of those he's been competing against. I've heard the favorite dancer/best dancer spiel enough, Nigel. I could let that fly if he could give a credible showing in the genres he's asked to dance in. They certainly cut no slack to dancers in other disciplines who struggle in one style, let alone each & every one.

That Cyrus might win this competition is just sad IMO. He should have been cut or never made the show in the beginning if one compares his dancing in every style but his own. The judges harp on the trained dancers about feet - but not a word about his, etc, etc, etc. There are plenty of reality "talent" competitions on TV... I really with this one competition was about trained dancers - the years of training should be rewarded.

A complete oposite of this is Eliana - she is quite simply stunning - her training is evident in every steps she takes - including those way outside her area - completely unlike Cyrus...

As Nigel said the other night, and it's not about the best dancer, but America's favorite dancer. Remember the season Russell won? I happen to agree with you, but but apparently the judges don't. It will be interesting to see what happens when the decision is taken out of the judges hands.

Just wondering what everyone thought of this week's show. While we we watching, DH told our cat that HE could dance better than Cyrus! :lmao:

Our votes are for Cheon and Eliana.

We loved this week's show. When they showed Eliana & Chehon in the Nutcracker costumes before the commercial break my oldest DD immediately texted me from her dorm, knowing what we were about to see. Amazing.

We are suspicious of Nigel's comments, particularly at the end about voting for Chehon. It's almost like he was playing reverse psychology w/ the audience, egging on votes for Cyrus.

Cyrus is an amazing animator & very charismatic guy. I cannot stomach the favorite dancer excuse when he has not been able to proficiently dance any other style with technique and still is repeatedly praised for being able to remember choreo. Seriously, the show has been on the air since May. We're way past the time he should be capable of remembering choreo. It is a competition. There is never any forgiveness of other dancers dancing outside their genre, technique is critiqued. How can you be in the competition yet not required to compete?

I'm worried the rumors are right & this is the last harrah for the show. The thread here has been just about dead and other chatter online is the same. Lots of comments about the last roundup of the old gang & the appearance of Nick, Benji and Will make me believe the smoke might really mean fire. There will be tears at our house.

I love the show. I will be sad if it goes.

Eliana is my favorite & amazing. She deserves it. I don't dislike Tiffany at all but she's been under the radar for me.

Chenon (spelling????) is FAR better than Cyrus but I'm guessing America won't vote that way.

Haven't watched Tuesday's show yet, but will be very sad if this is the end of the run. While I think Cheron is the better dancer (way better) Cyrun has a very marketable personality. In years to come, if he's in a movie people will say "Hey, it's Cyrus!" If Cheron is in one, people will say "Hey, wasn't he on SYTYCD?" I don't think he'll get the recognizibility factor that Alex Wong managed to get in only a couple weeks. It has nothing to do with his dancing, it's just that (to coin a phrase from another show) X Factor!

My favorite dancer this season has been TWITCH! Hey - he's been on just about every show they had the "All Stars" on! How can you see anyone else on stage when he is there - even Cyrus....

The dancers from SYTYCD who have gone on to have the biggest careers isn't dependent on being in a movie, those are not incredibly plentiful gigs. Sure, Twitch has achieved tremendous success & appeared in the Step Up films, but that's not even close to being his career. I'm amazed he can keep up w/ all the directions his career takes him.

Travis Wall has become tremendously successful from his SYTYCD association, but so have so many others. They may not be household names, but they are hotly in demand in the dance world -- which isn't easy to do. Several who were not winners on the show have absolutely booming careers -- deservedly so. Mark Kanemura, Kent Boyd, Allison Holker, Kathryn McCormack, Robert Roldan are some names I can think of off the top of my head.

Win or lose at this point, Chehon is sure to have job offers aplenty. Cyrus is much more a novelty performer at this point, which is a shame. I definitely think he'll get some work out of his appearance on the show, but I don't know if longterm his career will have legs, no pun intended. A winner w/ likability but minimal dance ability that I felt the show shoved down our throats is Russell Ferguson. The last I knew he did not have a career in the field of dance, in the movies or the rest of the world of dance that I'm aware of.

Here's my take on this season. While Chehon, Eliana and Tiffany are unquestionably head and shoulders above Cyrus when it comes to dancing, Cyrus has the most to gain from being on and possibly winning this show. If the others wanted a career in the dance world, there is no doubt in my mind that the would have achieved it, even without the show. However, if Cyrus had not been on SYTYCD, his dance career would never be anything more than dancing in the streets of Atlanta. He NEEDS this more than any of the others. Therefore, while I believe that Chehon SHOULD will for the boys, I won't be too heartbroken if Cyrus does win. Chehon will be successful either way. Cyrus' future would have been much less certain had it not been for this show.

Also, Chehon absolutely out-danced Cyrus in their number together on the performance finale.

Yep, that's pretty much what I meant. ;)

And I still haven't seen this week's show, but I will say that I love watching Cyrus dance for his joy. And I love watching Cheron dance for the dance. (And bonus points if he happens to not be wearing a shirt! :lovestruc) And I love watching Eliana dance for any reason. And I always love Twitch!

But Cabanafrau, most people are not a part of the dance world (like me!), so we don't get exposed to all of the work many of the alum are involved in. For the vast majority of people (and I would say that these are the folks that are voting) exposure to Twitch and Robert and Travis et al is going to be thru those more commercial venues such as movies and tv shows. And truly, that is what SYTYCD is about, bringing the art of dance to everyday people.

I totally agree with all your thoughts. Cyrus is very likeable but he isn't asked to much dancing on these shows each week. When the 2 guys danced together, Chelon (or whatever, lol) was asked to do a lot more dancing that Cyrus. It was quite obvious.

Eliana is magnificent. She amazes me.

Tiffany is really good and I think she might pull off a win for the girls.

There are no words for Twitch. And Benji's number with Tiffany was so much fun to watch. I loved him then and I love him now. Twitch seems like one of the most likeable people on TV.

My point was that most of the opportunities for dancers aren't just the movies. They're still bringing dance to regular people. Several alum are currently performing on Broadway in the Newsies musical in particular. Mark Kanemura has toured with Lady Gaga and been featured heavily in her videos. Many of the dancers have appeared as regular performers or special performers on Dancing with the Stars and in things like the Oscars -- all for regular audiences. Maybe Cyrus could appear in a specially designed number for the Oscars or something like that, but I don't see much potential right now beyond that.

I think Cyrus is charismatic and talented, but he has not really made any strides in anything outside of his genre. He is limited right now to a pretty small niche. I'd be ready to really cheer his win if he was showing signs of actual dance improvement in other styles. Like I said, it's pretty telling when they have to consistently keep praising him for remembering choreo.

While it's amazing to me that an untrained dancer could pull off 5 dances in the finale, I totally agree that it's ridiculous how often Cyrus is praised for just remembering choreography.

Cheion and Eliana are breathtaking dancers. If there could only be one winner, I would pick Eliana. She mastered every style and still was able to convey emotion and personality. She was consistently excellent every week in both technique and performance.
