Sympathy acknowledgements

As I stated on another thread my brother died 2 weeks ago. Who do you send Thank You's to?
So far I have sent them to those who sent flowers, brought food or made donations. What about those who sent sympathy cards?

I'm so sorry for your loss. When my DH's uncle died I took care of the thank you notes. Besides what you listed the other people I sent notes to where those that sent Mass cards.

Around here, the funeral home will give you the cards from the flowers, a list of those who made donations, and the guest book along with the acknowledgement cards to send out.

We normally have a guest book at home too for people who bring food. We ask them to sign and list the food they brought. It makes it easier to keep track of who the pots and pans need to be returned to. We usually send out cards to these people as well.

We have also sent cards to hospice workers, nurses, doctors, and friends who made many visits and helped out.

It really just depends on what you are comfortable with. I would say the flowers and donations should be acknowledged and everything else is up to you.

As for the cards sent to your home, I think an acknowledgement would be nice. It could be a nice card, a letter from you, or even a phonecall. I would do whatever you are comfortable with. People are usually very understanding in these matters.

We sent to everyone that sent a mass card, sent flowers, gave money, and every person that came to the funeral home and signed the guest books (all 250+!)

We send to those who send flowers, donate food or other services, and those who include memorials in their cards. If they just send a card or came to funeral/visitation/viewing then no card was sent.

Do what is comfortable to you. I don't think people expect an acknowledgement of a sympathy card. It's hard when you're grieving.
