Swoosh, swoosh...why can I hear my pulse in my ear? UPDATE of sorts post 25

I am so glad I stumbled onto this thread. I have had the whoosh whoosh thing- and it totally sounds like when they do the fetal heart sounds. My ENT put me on a nose spray, which sort of helped. It seems like it gets worse when it is warmer out. It was bad last summer, and it is bad again this one. . .but not as constant in the winter.

I am going to go check that website. It really is annoying. I hope it does get easier to live with.

Hello all. I also have tinnitus along with the heartbeat sound. The sound of the ocean and a low pitch sound are the tinnitus in my right ear. I usually hear the heartbeat in my left ear. I have been to multiple doctors and because I have also been recently diagnosed with an eye disease, my ear doctor believes I have an auto immune disease that is causing my problem. I have had tons of tests and this is what he believes I have.

I feel your pain. I started with my ear problems in May and it is still somewhat new to me. I am trying to learn to live with the noises and I believe in time I will, but sometimes I think I am going to go nuts!

Good luck to you! As others have mentioned... if you are around other noises then the noise in your ear won't be so bad. My only problem is that I have distorted hearing in my right ear now (I can never use the phone on my right ear - everything sounds like Darth Vader) so certain pitches make that worse.

The Dis has been such a good friend to me. I can sit in the kitchen, listen to the sound of the fridge and be perfectly happy! Good Luck!!!

Are you secretly being changed into the bionic woman? Without your knowledge...

Seriously I hope it is harmless and it goes away soon.

So...the ENT doctor put me on an allergy medicine and nose spray and that didn't work. On Friday morning I went in for an MRI. That was an experience. It was an open MRI so not as bad but I wasn't expecting it to be quite so loud. The first scans took 35 minutes, then they injected me with a dye and took 15 more minutes of scans. The dye leaked out into the muscles surrounding the vein and that burned so badly. It felt like my arm was on fire and now there's a big bruise there. I should have results on Monday and will post then.

I can't believe all of you that posted about living with these sounds...how do you do it? Sometimes this sound gets so annoying I just want to turn up the music or tv just so I won't hear it.

One good thing about the 50 minutes in the MRI...I took myself on a walk through the Magic Kingdom and was able to "ride" every single ride in the Magic Kingdom!!! Amazing...all the rides in 50 minutes!! ;) It got me through the banging and occasional panic of being sandwiched in the machine.

I don't know how I missed this when you first posted. I have had the exact same thing for many years. Early in the morning or late at night, when it is quiet, I can clearly hear my pulse in my right ear. In fact, at those same times, my DH can press his ear to the side of my head and hear it as well. It is also audible at all times with a stethoscope placed right behind my ear.

I worked many years in a neuro/trauma ICU and then many years in Special Procedures Radiology, so I knew all the bad things that it could be. When we decided to become pregnant, I saw a neurologist first to make sure that I did not have an aneurysm or some other malformation that would cause a complication during pregnancy.

The technical name for the sound is a bruit. I did have an angiogram to rule out an AVM or aneurysm. In my case the noise is caused by an artery that lies closer than normal to my inner ear. I was given an option to have an occlusion of the artery branch that causes the noise. The procedure is called an embolization. I declined any intervention because it really doesn't bother me now that I know it is not something that could kill me.

I seem to have other anatomy that really isn't where it is supposed to be. The dentist always has a hard time getting the correct area numb. When my back molars are finally numb so is half of the other side of my face. Not to mention the drooling and the facial droop. The dentist says I have a very strange nerve distribution.

Good luck with your results. Since you are not listing other neurological symptoms, I'm sure that you will get an explanation that will reassure you.
