Switching dog foods

My dog has recently been on 4health brand of grainfree dog food but hes been having some yeast issues and I'm thinking the potato in this food isn't helping so I'm going to be switching to a different brand but still grain-free.

Do you think I need to switch the food gradually or since they're both grain free I can switch a bit faster?

I think you will need to switch gradually. They still have different ingredients.

There is one brand I know of - Fromm Four Star Nutritionals, where they make each of their flavors compatible so you can easily switch from one to the next.

I'm pretty sure for other foods, even when switching with in the same brand, you will need to do so gradually.

Better safe than sorry!

It's funny you say that because I'm actually switching to the Fromm Four Star food! So it's nice to know I'll be able to switch flavors if my doggy gets tired and/or doesn't tolerate one of them.

Thanks, I'll switch gradually.

Generally if the protein is kept the same and they are having issues with their current food you can switch fairly quickly but it's dog to dog. Mine eats one food for breakfast/lunch and one for dinner and they're different brands and different proteins.

I've had to swap dog foods a lot due to my dog being allergic to everything!

The best food I've found for dog's with lots of allergies is Great Life limited ingredient (grain and potato free) or even the regular Great Life or Pioneer, which is the same company (also Grain and potato free but not as limited ingredient). Be careful of peas as they tend to cause similar issues as potatoes and is used in a lot of grain free or grain and potato free formulas.

I didn't know that dog's could become allergic to proteins if fed too long (it's happened to us twice) so now I rotate several different foods.

I have a problem with yeast as well. I put the dogs on grain free long ago. Never bothered to look for yeast in this food though. I may have to see if there is any. Yeast can be just as bad as grain. Thank you for bringing up the yeast issue.

I'm switching from 4Health Duck and Potato to Fromm Beef Frittata because I've read that dogs do well starting on that flavor of Fromm, but looking at their flavors it appears that all of them have either peas or potatoes or both in their ingredients.

Thank you to the PP about the Great Life suggestion. I like the looks of those ingredients and may try that next if my dog doesn't do well on the Fromm.

The problem is I'm not sure what's causing my dogs issues since we haven't had him allergy tested.....yet. I'm trying to figure it out on our own. It may very well be environmental but I've been giving him allergy meds and hes still itching.
