Swiss Army knife allowed on-board?

Hi!

Can my DH take his Swiss Army knife onboard the ship? In the cruise contract it talks about the "weapons" policy -- and no knives/swords. It says no diving knives -- I have no idea what a diving knife is, so I figured I'd better check about the Swiss Army knife.

When they say no knives I believe them mean all knives. I know they have taken leathermen away and I think they would do the same with a Swiss Army knife. Best to leave it at home.

I can tell you first hand No. They took are's out of the suite case. There was a note in it that we could pick up in port when we got back.

I also packed my Swiss army knife in my checked bag. I wanted to have it for the corkscrew and scissors and stuff. I too received a note stating that I could pick it up when back in Port. It was quick and easy to pick it up once we returned, btw. This actually made me feel very good about DCL security.

On an aircraft, your checked bags are not available to you, so the restrictions for checked bags and carry-ons are different. You can pack knives in checked luggage.

On the ship, your checked bags and your carry-ons all wind up in your stateroom, so the same restrictions apply to both.

A diving knife is a knife designed to be worn by a scuba diver. Becuase some scuba divers bring their own equipment for some of the scuba excursions, it's specifically listed so the scuba divers will leave thier knives at home.

Pre-9/11 you could bring Swiss Army knives on board. If I recall correctly, on airlines you could bring pocket knives as long as the blade wasn't shorter than something like 5 inches (or what ever the number was). But now even small pocket knives are not allowed.


Why would he need it on a ship?

The same reasons you would need on at home. It's a nifty tool that can serve 100's of uses, uses that don't change just because you're on a cruise ship. Just to give some examples: wife has a loose thread on her dress, use the knife to cut it, piece of equipment in your cabin has a loose screw, use the little screw driver to tighen it up rather that bother with the hassle of getting maintainence to fix it, needing a bottle openner for wine has already been covered, etc.

Thanks for the answer! We'll just stick it in in-laws car at the port. That way we can have it for the rest of the vacation but not have to worry about leaving it at security on the ship.

FIL brought one in his luggage and it was removed by the staff before it arrived in his room. He was able to pick it up as we leaft the ship on the last day. It was a swiss army witha cork screw etc. So rememeber that luggage is scanned, checked and opened so if there's something questionable in there,it will be removed

On our Carnival cruise they took a pair of wire cutters from our friend. He's an electrician and always carries them and didn't think to leave it home. They also took his pocket knife. This was in his carry on, so he lost them both!

Are mini scissors allowed?
I tell you buttons only pop off our clothes on vacation. Now if it were just the pant buttons i would say its no coincidence because we like to eat well on vacation and the waistbands on our pants aren't always expandable. But I have no explanation for the buttons on the polo style shirts.

The mini-sewing kit has mini scissors! That is why I ask. I have no intention of harming Minnie Mouse.

My DH feels totally "naked" without his pocket knife. It has been used in more ways than Carter's has little pills.....

One example on the ship.....we've received a fruit basket from DCL...with a whole pineapple. Have you ever tried to cut a whole pineapple with the butter knife they give you????

Actually we use them to cut off the zip ties we now use to close our luggage instead of locks. We use lime green ones so it is easy to spot if we've been checked by TSA and just one more way to help spot our luggage!
