Swine Flu?

If you know that you are sick why would you go to a Park and risk spreading the disease worse than it already has???????? Its a great idea to use alcohol based sanitizer but make sure that they are 60%or more alcohol. I know that you are at Disney and want to enjoy but please if you are sick stay at your hotel.

I agree 100%. I sure wish everyone felt that way. We had to cut our trip short because of inconsiderate people. It was unbelievable how many people were coughing and sneezing around others and not covering. It also AMAZED me the number of women who would walk out of a bathroom stall and just head straight to the door without washing their hands :scared1::sad2:,

We leave Sun, My son leaves tomorrow. My son is 32 with Asthma, my DGD is 7 with Asthma. I find this news very upsetting. I guess I will take our masks and pray extra hard. I just can't believe people go to the parks sick. They are asking and asking sick people to stay home. I ran a fever last week for 4 days, didn't leave the house during the whole time, just in case I had it. Still don't really know. I never run a fever. Would not even let anyone come in, except my husband. Some people have a mild case and some are not living through it... people need to Think!

I'm with you on this Kimberh, I leave on 10/19.

As for people/kids being sick, people do not stay home, never have. Our elementary school last October had a big outbreak of a nasty stomach virus. I've caught strep throat from my eldest when he did day care(10 yrs ago).

So I'm not surprised of people going to the parks sick.

My guess is that people do not stay out of the parks because they are trying to get every last bit of their dollars' worth. For many, this is a once in a lifetime trip, so to have to stay in their room when they feel crappy, but not horrible, is almost unthinkable to them. I can understand it, but it puts everyone else at risk, which is very inconsiderate, considering the H1N1 threat.

We DVC-ers know that we will be back soon, so while we would be disappointed, it wouldn't be the end of the world for us to hang out at our resort. Also, being in a nice villa vs a value room certainly helps. ;)

I heard on TV a short while ago that if you had the flu within the last 6 months, it was probably swine.

I've been away from the boards for a while - mainly because of the games I'm playing on Facebook. But we'll be at Animal Kingdom Kidani in two weeks and we're wondering if there is any flu stuff down there? Has anyone heard anything?

:lmao: On another note...are you in my Mafia yet?! :rotfl:

I often wonder if body spray, which has alcohol in it, would work as well as hand sanitizer if I spray it on my hands. I'm headed to WDW in 7 days for a solo trip, and the thought of getting sick while I'm in Disney World terrifies me (but not enough to skip my trip);) Hand sanitizer, wipes, got it!

Hand sanitizer and wipes only work for surfaces, once you get stuff airborne, then you are in trouble.

I would never go to WDW in the fall or winter - we went 1x at Christmas, and we took a chance, that we aren't going to take again for a long while (until kids are older), as it's proven many times on these boards, and while at the parks, that most people care more about money than actually taking care of themselves, or the rest of us by not spreading their germs.

I hope you all who are going soon remain healthy and have a great trip!

First let me say I am by no means a germ-a-phobe. You will not find me scrubbing out the tub or shower in the hotel EVER! I use the sheets, blankets and towels provided and, yes, sometimes even sit on the floor!:scared1:

That being said, we always pack a can of lysol and when we get to the room spray the areas most likely to carry those horrible flu germs...doorknobs, lite switches, sink handles, etc. I am always careful to spray the remote (have seen several TV news stories about this being the germiest item in the room) and then we place the remote in a ziploc bag. You can still press the buttons and it works just fine. By the way, my kids love having "spray duty". Keeps them busy while we get organized too!;)

so, take simple precautions but don't let it interfere with a great trip!

Wow, we are going down for a week leaving on Nov. 7th. I wonder if the flu will be more widespread then or not as bad because more people will have had a chance to be vaccinated. We are hoping to get the vaccination before we go! But, I am glad to have read this and plan to bring wipes and lysol with me. I always bring the hand sanitizer in my purse, but maybe I will bring a few extra bottles just to be sure!

We are headed to the World in early Nov. We're a bit concerned about H1N1, especially with a 21-month old child. I've been looking for hand sanitizing wipes to bring to WDW but the ones that would be affective, have a scent and DD and I are both sensitive to scents. A family member who works with H1N1 information everyday told me that a great way to keep our hands sanitized at WDW would be to take some small, baby wash cloths, wet them and add hand soap to them every morning, place them in a large ziploc and use them when we can't get to a sink. Then place the used cloth in a separate ziploc. If you run low on fresh wash cloths while in the park, you can wash them out in a restroom sink & add more handsoap to them.

Why not use hand sanitzer?

Well, according to DS12s dr, they aren't seeing any seasonal flu here--everyone who's got the flu now has got H1N1. And, it's rampant in our school. So, I guess it won't be that much worse in WDW! except fo the plane...

I guess I'm confused how doctors are not testing people, yet they are assuming everyone has H1N1?

In my city, we are still testing for H1N1, and so far, only 1 new case this week, but almost everyone has a throat thing. It's very common where I live in Southern Ontario as the weather changes so rapidly, so everyone has scratchy and sore throats. Some are strep, but again, those are being swabbed for, and you can have very similar symptoms to H1N1. Some people have identical symptoms to H1N1, and guess what? They were tested, and no flu!

My feeling is that they are assuming everyone has it because it's better to treat people as they do, so that they can take proper precautions. As we've all determined, many people don't know how to practice proper hygiene; hence, the whole H1N1 problem in the first place.

The problem, as I see it, is that lots of people, and their family members are being put on antivirals - are the antivirals going to run out? What if the body really didn't need them? Just like with docs who prescribe antibiotics for kids, just as a precaution.

Hope everyone stays healthy, Tiger

Hand sanitizer is great, but please be careful when using it on small children who are likely to put their hands in their mouths. It's pure alcohol & when they suck their thumbs, etc they are ingesting alcohol. I read rercently of a toddler who was hospitalized with alcohol intoxication. The Mother was charged with giving alcohol to her child. It turned out she was cleaning his hands repeatedly with hand sanitizer & he was then putting his hands in his mouth. She thought she was protecting her child from germs but instead made him very sick.

This is why not...

Plus, I see us needing to sanitize our hands frequently and the thought of using lots of sanitizer is not appealing to me because like I said in my previous post, we're both sensitive to scents and most hand sanitizers (gels & wipes) have a scent, even if it's just that of alcohol, it can still trigger our allergies & asthma.

Our dr yesterday mentioned testing...and said the H1N1 test is very expensive ( a few hundrend dollars), and that they aren't sure if insurance companies will pay for it.

My son in law is so sick... since last night. Has all the symptoms. Went to the Dr this morning. They said no swine flu. The test is only 60% accurate. Many are being told no, but do have it. Just want to pass that along. This figure is from a Dr. They are treating him, so the family I have been so worried about, 2 with asthma, 1 infant, now are being exposed. If you pray, I sure would appreciate it if you would lift them up.

Thanks!

The thing with testing. The state labs are overwhelmed and it takes about a week to get the results back. So if they wait to get it verified by the lab test, the patient could have already recovered if they were given Tamiflu. So most physicians are going by the symptoms and their professional judgment.

Plus when a person gets the H1N1 flu, the entire family is not being put on Tamiflu, only the sick person.

My son was diagnosed with H1N1 and neither my husband nor I were given Tamiflu. Both of us have not developed any symptoms at this time.
