Swine Flu Parties...

I just watched CNN and they were talking about people who are choosing to have or go to Swine Flu parties instead of getting vaccinated. CNN reported that the CDC did not think that the parties were a good idea (ya think) but suggested that those who are thinking of going to such a party to get the vaccine instead.

Wow!

I can't say I am suprised though. People used to do this with chicken pox, to purposely expose their kids.

Well, My DD12 was just diagnosed with what is most likely H1N1 flu ( flu test is positive with overlap?), and when I asked the Dr. if she should still get vaccinated,(her school is being done on 11/15), she said absolutely. I don't know if it makes a difference but DD is immuno-compromised.

She had the regular flu shot 3 weeks ago. We're in RI where the flu just started hitting schools in the last couple of weeks.

Oh, goodness. What is wrong with people?! The danger in this flu are that there are so many more cases of serious or fatal effects for those not usually seriously compromised by the flu. The people are going send their kids to catch the flu with the hope that the effects are mild, as they are for most people. Then they'll pat themselves on the back and think it was a great idea. But when one of those children develops serious side effects or dies all of a sudden it won't be their fault. Some people should not be allowed to procreate!

My DD had what was presumed to be swine flu in April. Not only do I think the idea of a party is stupid but I can't imagine having a house full of other people's kids when my own felt like crap. And my DD was certainly not up for entertaining.

Well I thought you could get it more than once. I'm going to search right now. It seems as if you can catch it more than once just like a cold or the seasonal flu.

I understand that some folks are asking for a sub-board for the H1N1 threads (which I actually think would be a good idea because then we could find the info all in one place), but until that happens - IF it happens - this is where many of us are finding very useful information and supporting one another with our concerns..

You can't get it more than once. Once you get it, you'll have antibodies against it, keeping you from getting it again. This is actually the very reason that vaccines work.

I think my children's school is one giant swine flu party! I wouldn't do it for this H1N1, but I did purposely expose my youngest to chicken pox when older DD's friend had it. I was doubtful that the chicken pox vaccine would provide lifelong immunity (a few years later they decided everyone would need a second dose) and would rather she have the actual disease like her two older siblings.

I think though there are different strains. You could get a different type. Unless they are specifically tested, you can't be sure the original person has H1N1.

I had not heard of that. Whether it's a good idea or not...the grossness of it just makes me gag! What do people do to make sure their party is a success? Drink out of one communal glass, share popsicles, bob for apples one after the other, tickle each other's noses with feathers to make each everyone sneeze, and then play spin the bottle? Yuckkkk.

I am in Rhode Island as well and I was at the pharmacy last night for meds (do not have the flu) and overheard the pharmacist telling people that the whole state of Rhode Island was out of Tamiflu. They were sending everyone to Portsmouth because they had the only pharmacist who could make new batches of Tamiflu.

It's the same in my school - kids are refusing to stay home because of sports and other after school activities that they want to participate in. Now we're at 20% absent and many of our teachers are battling sickness. We even had a blood drive and H1N1 vaccination clinic there yesterday. So MORE people coming in to get infected then spread it out there. Sheesh, sometimes I wonder about people.
