Swine Flu: National Emergency.

It is not that I did not belive you however I was suprised to hear about young adults dying from the reg flu

Is it common? No, most of them are elderly or young kids.

I'd venture to say most of the people who have died of the swine flu already had an underlying medical condition that they were unaware of.

I know my former high school had like 500 kids out sick out of 2000 kids in the school total. None of them died. 1000 people might seem like a lot but it really isn't in the grand scheme of things.

I'm not getting the vaccine. I'm not that scared. I'm more scared of the side effects that a vaccine can cause (though rare).

Caitlin, I believe the vaccine in Canada is different than that of the US. I believe ours is similar to the one in the UK which is not reporting any adverse effects. I don't know why.
I'm also pretty certain the US vaccine doesn't have adjuvant in it.

EXACTLY! I had Dystonia once, an allergic reaction to a medication. The doctors said it had been exactly like a petit mal seizure. It was HELL ON EARTH for 8 hours. I am not taking my chances, too risky. I haven't even gotten the Gardasil shot because it's too new.

me either. gardasil was never long-term tested because people were so excited that they might be able to prevent three strains of hpv (even though there are more than 30 out there:rolleyes:) so no one knows whats going to happen twenty or thirty years down the road to those who got the shot. definitely not something i want to risk.

i'm not getting swine flu either, isn't there a risk of GBS?

There is a risk whenever you vaccinate for a virus. Its just something you have to take into consideration when getting it.
The risk of the actual virus is more deadly to some (like pregnant women) than the GBS.

I'm getting my shots soon. We're in the high risk category.

well i leave in Utah so i'm a little scared because it is going around like crazy!!!

My 2 cents here:

1. I don't get regular flu shots. I'm allergic to the preservative in them. Not a serious, serious reaction, but I do get a large welt that doesn't go away for weeks. Not taking a chance with that!

2. The media is totally blowing this out of proportion.

3. I get sick every October. No kidding, ever since I was a baby. Sick, sick, sick. I have a cough right now, but no other swine flu symptoms. No vomitting, no fever, just a frickin' cough.

5. Over 200 kids were out from school today (out of around 1300). While this is a record for our school, most kids have bronchitis, or a very mild form of the swine flu. There's only been 2 confirmed cases of major swine flu. 2 out of 1300. Not including staff members!

6. To Shelby and Sonya re: Gardasil shot, me neither. My doctor doesn't want me to get it. It hasn't been tested nearly enough.

Same here! I just stock up on allergy/cough medication, and I'm better (usually) within 2 weeks.

I get sick on Halloween every few years, lol.

I agree with all of you guys.
I mean, I would never get the new H1N1 flu shot because It's too new, and no one has a for sure record of the side-effects. I have already gotten the swine flu, and I didn't even know it. Yay me (: But my mom & I have agreed that I'm not getting Gardasil either. It hasn't been tested enough. Pretty much what you guys said; But I think It was kind of "bouge" that President Obama announced the National Emergency with the H1N1 Influenza. They are making this flu a bigger deal than It actually is. Just my thoughts.

well i probably know 10-20 people whom have had it (wow i just whom too much time in english class) but i dont think its an emergency like the people who've had it told me its like the normal flu but ya never know til you've gotten it

Well, after about a bajillion months, someone at my school has it.
I'm guessing it will spread faster than the can get us our vaccines.
But hey, that's just reality.

So, it has spread to Canada I'm guessing?

It's been here just as along as it's been in the US.
Maybe a little bit less time, but yes. Mexico is a popular vacation destination around March Break so it spread quickly.
Swine Flu is worse further west of NB, mostly due to the large population. But there's a school in my city that has 13 kids diagnosed, and 43 kids out with flu-like symptoms.
Canada's vaccination process is really messy right now, everyone's standing outside clinics, waiting impatiently when they were clearly told that right now it's only priority groups that are supposed to be vaccinated right now.
The vaccination clinic at my school is November 18, I can almost guarantee I'll be sick by then.
