Swine Flu: National Emergency.

I may sound arrogant but I really am not in any panic about this 'swine flu'
it seems as though most people that die from it are sickly to being with, and a normal, healthy person should be able to get over it just like any other flu.

sure 1,000 deaths sounds like a lot, but in comparison to the regular flu it's nothing, roughly 60,000 people die per year form flu/influenza don't know how reliable this site is, but it's worth a look at the stats.

I think the media is doing what it always does and is fear mongering to make this flu seem to be some crazy epidemic, when really it's killed only a couple hundred people less than the average flu kills PER DAY!
::yes::
and its killed 1000 people since like, april. so really. more people are dying every day from getting in their car than are dying from swine flu.

I will always be concerned, but I don't worry. I still wash my hands like I usually do and use hand sanitizer after going to a store and I keep up my exercise and diet so that I stay as healthy as possible.

One of my friends is a crazy clean freak. He used hand sanitizer a hundred times a day and he still wound up getting it.

If you sanitize/clean too often, you body doesn't have anything to base a defense on. That's why most of the mothers I know make sure their child is exposed to things like the chicken pox as soon as possible because then they can protect against shingles in the future. And personally, I'd rather have chicken pox than shingles.

And, like Caitlin said, I'm not that worried. 1,000 deaths since April is, comparatively speaking, nothing. More people do die from regular flu each year, yet nobody gets all worked up about that. Shelby is correct, the "national emergency" title simply enables hospitals to treat it faster than they would be able to otherwise.

I'm not getting the Swine Flu vaccine, but then again, I never get a flu shot either. And I'm proud to say that I am rarely sick and even then the last time I was sick enough to miss school was in 4th grade (I'm a college freshman).

It's no big deal me and my whole family had it.So did most of my friends still in high school.Not one of us died or had any complications.

I know that it's huge and all. Everyone at my school it seems has it! :) but it's not as big of a deal as it sounds... no one really dies or anything. it's just like the regular flu.... I think :)

Overblown.

I think its a move to shore up some more funding, etc.

and plus, you've got to give the media something to talk about. ;)

A lot of people I know have it and I think my mom might have it and I might be getting so I'm not sure, I've just been coughing alot have a huge head ache, and am super tired.

zomg h1n1!!!!

I hung out with someone who has swine flu yesterday... I feel fine?

Here they do not test you. They say it's pretty much likely you have it, but they can't guarantee it. If you feel sick, don't go anywhere.

not to sound selfish but I still have an apt tommrow and I still have to go to school other wise I will fail and I am basicly on a scholorship

If it is like a normal flu then how come someone my age just died from it.

I didn't personally tell anyone to stay home from school. That's what the doctor says.
If I got sick I'd probably only stay home a few days, I couldn't afford to miss a day of school.

.

hundreds of people your age die from the regular flu every year.

The little nose swab test they do in the doctors office should be covered by your insurance. It was for me, when I got tested. But now they're basically not testing and just diagnosing it from the symptoms.

My school (a univeristy) is actually telling us that if we feel like we have the symptoms to leave campus and go home. It doesn't matter how many classes you miss, they just don't want you infecting the rest of the school. I'm sure you could make up work or something and not fail. Most teachers and schools would prefer that somebody not feeling well stay home than risk infecting the other students.

Thats how my university is. Then again a ton of people are taking advantage of this when they want a "sick day." The professors basically let you off free cause they can't really tell who is lying and who isn't. Anything you miss you make up in there office hours. Some require doctor notes, but some don't. :/

I have never heard of that

our school requires you to submit a certified doctor's note through health services before you can even start to make up your work in any class. Granted, you can always e-mail your professors your work/ask what you're missing while you're out, too.

just because you've never heard of it, doesn't mean it isn't true. 68,000 people in the us every year die from REGULAR flu.

It is not that I did not belive you however I was suprised to hear about young adults dying from the reg flu

>>> national emergency
So the federal government can act as if martial law was in effect. Now we really know it is not a true emergency because the Emergency Broadcast System (or whatever it is called nowadays) has not been activated.

>>> fail ... scholarship
The school has the obligation to allow you to make up the work, giving you access to facilities and continuing any benefits and scholarships that may have been in effect had you not gotten ill. Meanwhile you would have to be prepared to go into recluse to concentrate on studies, that is, no social life.

At my college (this was pre-MK) one spring a substantial number of students stopped going to class to protest the Vietnam War. The school agreed to grant everyone course credit and a grade of "pass" not figured into the grade point average. For those who did not come back to complete the work, a sentence stating that "half of the work was done" was put on transcripts.

My campus tells everyone to go home if they even think they have the swine flu. 2/4 of my teachers have had it, and none of them care if people have to miss because of it.

I would definitely talk to your teachers about make-up work; I'm sure they don't want you spreading swine flu around.
