Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Based on incubation periods and what Mexico has done I would say 7-10 days would be the advice. However, if the closure is only to disinfect, I would imagine WDW could do it very quickly.

I wouldn't be surprised, though, that the night shift isn't already doing heavy disinfecting while the guest are asleep.

That being said I think this is a foolish announcement. Moving to a Level 6 is no worse in the USA than a Level 5, because we already have the virus here. This "plan" sounds like it was made by someone who doesn't fully grasp the WHO levels.

I agree with you. The WHO levels are to prepare other countries for a possible epidemic. It is already here, so PHASE 6 doesn't mean any more than PHASE 5 did to us.

Yes, they did come in contact with hundreds of people on a daily basis. People back then named the flu the "crowding disease". Instead of subways, they used trolleys. Yes, we can get around the world faster now days with the invention of the plane, but people did still travel around the world in 1918.

I agree (see my post). with everything you're saying. In large cities in 1918 people did come in contact with each other on a regular basis. But, what I am arguing is that the spread of the Spanish Flu today would be 100s of times faster than it was in 1918 due to air travel, public transportation, and the automobile. Don't confuse my statements with some sort of BIDENistic fearmongoring. Just stating the facts. If we still had a significant portion of the nation using horse and buggy to travel to town on Sunday afternoons for next weeks supplies the bug would not move as quickly. Also, as far as comparing to 1918, a lot of people around the world do not live in any more sanitary conditions than 1918 America, yet they have a LOT more contact with the outside world for the virus to spread. I agree with the other posters 2009 America is a ton more well prepared to handle this than 1918 America was, BUT there are dissadvantages to our technological advances that outweigh some of the medical advances. No one could possibly convince me that a flu bug could have spread from California or Mexico (wherever it started) to New Zealand, Spain, Germany, or even New York City in less than a month in 1918. Just not happening

I guess here in the States people are used the Hurricane & Tornado scales, that they think these phases indicate the seriousness of the strain. Oh well. :confused3

I guess we'll have to wait. I believe that I have as much chance of getting here as I do at the parks. Where I work, I come in contact with Mexicans that do travel back and forth to Mexico so the risk is there. Plus, I believe that there is a confirmed case in my state now. It is in Indiana, Ohio, and now my state of Kentucky. At the level that it has already spread, I can't see closing the parks helping much.

I agree you can get it anywhere. People just need to use common sense which unfortunately many people do not....

Aw...There is a special needs student in Maryland that has "probable" swine flu now. The strange thing is that he has no contact to Mexico. They have closed the school and are telling the students to all stay home. Don't go to the mall. Ya think the teenagers will all stay home? :sad2:

I love some of the people who do the press conferences. I'm watching one out of Maryland right now and the lady said that teenagers should not go out and congregate at the malls this weekend and then she said this is not a time for alarm. Well the teens I know anybody telling them not to go to the mall is cause for alarm! :lmao:

I found this interesting as well. The flu doesn't just float around randomly, so it's either A) not the swine flu, or B) they haven't investigated far enough to find the link.

Is that the one at Rockville High School?? Or is this a new one? I know as of this morning we had 9 probable cases here.

For those of you planning a very special Disney wedding in the next few months.....

This is copied from the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

"The woman in the LaGrange hospital had traveled to Cancun, Mexico, which is considered the epicenter of the outbreak. She flew there with a companion April 17, and she started feeling chills, fever and headaches about a day later, said Dr. Elizabeth Ford, head of Georgia’s Division of Public Health.

The woman flew home to Kentucky, where she lives in Bowling Green, on April 21, and two days later, still feeling ill, she drove with her 5-year-old daughter to Atlanta en route to LaGrange, where she was to attend a wedding, officials said.

Despite feeling poorly, the woman did some shopping in Atlanta between April 23 and Sunday. Officials did not say where she might have shopped. After attending the wedding, she was brought by family members to the LaGrange hospital.

The next day, the hospital tested her for general influenza and sent the sample to the state Tuesday. The state identified that she had influenza A, which is a broad group of flu types that includes swine flu."

This would be an example of NOT using common sense...:confused3

Bet all the guests at that wedding are pleased with this woman!

Yes. There is an update on the CNN live site from the officials in Maryland - I am listening to it. :)

Yes it was Rockville, which they decided to close for the day.

Right. I found the article. It sounds like the reason this school decided to close as opposed to the one in my county (which is the one with the student who's father is Obama's aide who went to Mexico) is because the student appears to have no link to anyone who has been to Mexico recently - he may have got it from someone at the school and therefore it is already spreading.
