Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

a great tip for flying and trying to reduce catching airborne germs is to lightlyu swab the inside of yoru nose w/ neosporin ointment and also using saline a few times during flying is also a great thing to do. The neosporin does 2 things... keeps y9our air passages moist and contains an antibacterial so it can help to reduce germs that you breath in. Saline is good for keeping your air passages moist and flushed. Wipe down your arm rests and tray table with wipes and touch nothing in the restrooms, including the faucet.... you are better off purelling after a trip to the airplane restroom. Also, it is idela if after you reach your hotel you can either shower or go swimming to wash away germs. And like so many others said, wash hands often and lots of purell and hand wipes. Wipe down your room real good and we usually do a quick purell after every ride.

As for the swine flu.... it is likely to become a big problem, possibly pandemic. The good news, is that so far it has been proven to be treatable if diagnosed early on. I wonder if the innoculation they offered in the 70's will work on this one too?

BTW I love that SNL skit about swine flu, one of my favs lol

I have always gotten sick every single time I fly - from mildly ill to raging fever, need-to-go-to-bed sick - but in February when we flew to Orlando, I used the neosporin in my nose and I didn't get sick at all. Miracle! I made the family do it too! They grumbles about it but since I read it on here that it worked, they used it!

Nurses do this all the time, the neosporin up the nose trick. It works!

Can you explain this to me? Do you only use a small amount? Can anyone do this, even children? Do you just rub it at the opening of the nostrils? We are flying in 10 days and I want to take every precaution I can. Thanks for any help!!

See, how can a little kid catch it and not the rest of his family? The CDC says there is only 1 case in Ohio

I just read on Fox News about that school in NYC. There were over 75 kids in the nurses office last week. They closed the school Thur and Fri and have been bringing cleaning crews in. The CDC is saying there are 8 confirmed cases?

In Mexico 81 have died yet the CDC is saying 20 confirmed cases in Mexico?

I think there is a lot more people out there with this flu and by the time they are tested, get the results back and the CDC goes through the investigation and red tape ...errr then we are the last to hear it.

Our Gov. just gave a new conference about the flu. He said he full expects it to be in our state in the *days to come* his words ~ we have a lot of travelers that come to our city.

I am curious as to how many unconfirmed cases there are.

Well, we were just watching the news and it said that it was a 9 year old little boy who had the swine flu (here in Ohio). Apparently he is now out of the hospital and at home. Whether there is any threat as of now, I don't know. They have not told us to keep our kids home from school, but I really don't want to seem overprotective if I decided to keep mine home since the one case in Ohio came right from the school they both go to!
Its crazy, with the symptoms being the same as the regular flu I'm sure there will be many cases that are not confirmed because people don't just run to the Dr. when they have the flu. They normally just let it run its course.

"If this thing takes off, I can assure you, getting a refund from Disney will be the least of our problems.
If you want to know what you can do right now to protect yourself and your family, go to the CDC website and click on or search Pandemic flu. Everything you need to know plus a whole lot more is there."

I agree wholeheartedly. Disney only emerges in the bigger picture because like I said...this was a vacation that was long overdue, I'm unemployed and living off savings and a student loan. I wanted us to have a break.

As far as the ethics. Disney is great but there is no heart there on their part. It's all about money for them, and so it is for me in the end because that $600 dollars could have gone a long way if we end up having to hunker down at all. Maybe ethical was the wrong word.

Money makes the world go round folks. It's why we're in this mess to begin with. Why do you think they haven't closed the borders yet? Very interesting article I found on the Huffington post website, just look up Nature bites back and Industrial animal production by a David Kirby. It's an eye opener.

I was just reading on WKYC.com that they have decided to close the school for a week.

We fly from Houston to WDW next Monday. Normally, I wouldn't freak out too much because I would just take normal precautions and watch for symptoms. But... I am 13 weeks pregnant. Therefore, I am a little more worried because I figure that puts me at higher risk (and of course, the baby) and there is less that can be done safely to treat a pregnant woman (unless I am wrong, which would be great- I know tamniflu is not safe in pregnancy). ANYWAY... the neosporin thing sounds great- any ideas if it would be safe for pregnancy? Even it prevents colds on the plane, it is worth trying.

Hope everyone stays healthy!

What's the news about this in Houston? My 11 year old is going on a school trip this Thurs. and Fri. down to NASA, the zoo, and a museum. They are traveling by tour bus and spending one night in a hotel. I already plan to drill him about hand washing but he's a typical boy who isn't very germ conscious. :sad2:

I think you should just go ahead and go on your trip! Life is too short to spend it in fear. If Disney gave everyone a refund who had already booked their trip w/o insurance just because they heard this swine flu may become a problem at some point, they'd go broke (well, not really, but still...)

I have seen films in microbiology classes, etc, that would make anyone want to build a shelter and live in it forever, but we have to live our lives, no? :confused3

I have a sneaky feeling that our trip is going to be cancelled. We've got really protective parents who would worry themselves sick even if the virus never hits Florida or the peripheral states so I think the trip is going to get called off just so that they can keep their sanity intact.

Well, there goes our engagement trip. :sad1:

I think as long as you wash your hands before eating or touching your eyes or nose, you'll be fine. That is, unless the virus spreads to Florida, then it might be time to cancel the trip. Boy, I'd hate to have to cancel my trip:sad2:

I know! Our trip's supposed to be from 20th May to 4th June. I'm just praying that Florida doesn't get hit, but I've read that they think it's only a matter of time. So I'm not having high hopes of reaching Disney at all.

Bummer. A pox on this flu.

Why do you think they haven't closed the borders yet?

On BBC Breakfast news they explained how even if 99.9% of travel in and out of a country were to be cancelled, it would still not stop the swine flu arriving - it would just delay it. My guess, with that fact, I don't think the authorities would advise it as I am sure they will weigh it up with the disaster it would cause to the business world, which is already on it's knees

However, wost case scenario, if we see Mexico type scenes in Florida, would we take the risk of taking our families on a non-essential trip into that (even though they are still saying trips to Mexico are fine!)

To all the people here who are panicking: Do you panic over the regular flu season every year?

This swine flu strain appears to cause the same type of symptoms as the regular annual influenza. The only reason people are freaking out is because there is no vaccine prepared for it yet.
Remember a couple of years ago when the annual flu vaccine was prepared for the flu season and they GOT IT WRONG? The vaccine everyone got that year was useless against the strain that actually went around the world. This swine flu is just like that scenario.

Why are there so many deaths in Mexico? It could be a number of reasons, lack of good health care, less clean conditions, people may have lower immune systems. There may be another bug going around that already made people sick and this came along.

I did some research and found that the mortality rate for the annual influenza is 5%-10% in the U.S. The mortality rate in Mexico so far seems to be about 8%, if there numbers being reported are correct. The mortality rate for this swine flu in the U.S. so far is 0%.

I really wish everyone will relax and not feed into the fear. Please stop letting the news stations which depend on ratings dictate how frightened you should be. "We have nothing to fear except fear itself" Panic will just create more panic and will not help the situation. Wash your hands regularly and get rest. I firmly believe that this too shall pass. Good health to all. :flower3:

While I think its GREAT that none of the US cases have been fatal, it's still too early to say that they won't be. As of now there have only been about 14 confirmed cases in the US. That number is far too small to make any real predictions yet. The scary thing about this flu virus is that we just don't know much about it or how it may evolve. While we shouldn't panic it's good to be on our toes. :)

:thumbsup2 Cautious?....sure. No reason to panic yet.If a pandemic occurs like 1918, Disneyworld will be the LEAST of the problems.
