Swine Flu at Disney?

The whole swine flu vaccine is such a farse! The government rushed to over produce tons of these vaccines! To the extend that they now give them away for free to anyone who is stupid enough to stand in a 2 hour line for them. Yet if you want a chicken pox vaccine from the health department you need to pay $20. Also, if you increase your Vit D intake it will be just as affective as getting the vaccine. That is the route my family chooses to take!

You are free to take your vitamin supplements, whereas I am happy to have gotten the vaccine. Our medical clinic charges $10 for the swine flu vaccine, and it might be covered by our insurance. We went the day after Thanksgiving, and there was no one in line. Guess everyone was shopping.

Our friend with pneumonia has now been on a ventilator for almost 3 weeks, and has been in an induced coma for most of that time. She has also had both lungs collapse and had a chest tube inserted in each one. They hope to wean her off the ventilator soon, and then give her a trach tube - but she has to be stable enough to go to the OR for that. They won't know if there has been any brain damage from oxygen deprivation (when her O2 levels were low for several days) until she is conscious. So - while most people get the flu and then it's over, for some otherwise healthy people, it can be a very long road to recovery - if they survive.

and that is your perogative...But to suggest that the H1n1 is completely unsafe simply by citing whichever internet news outlet people happen to be surfing this week is irresponsible, and flat out suspect.If you choose to go the vitamin D route fine.If you choose to take your chances and do neither that is fine to.No one is FORCING the vaccines on you.Also,the reason the H1n1 vaccine has been FREE is that it is a pandemic and potential for public health crisis.You have seen multiple posts even here on the disboards the last several months about people that are knowingly ill getting on planes, and going to disney anyway.At this point in time Varicella is NOT a public health crisis, nor is it a pandemic..

Ok I'll try to clarify a few things.First off I didn't know I was sick until the day I got on the ship.That's when my symptoms showed up.I also did not lie to get onto the ship.So to all of you saying I could have canceled my trip it was pretty much impossible for me to do that.

Second I did exactly what the doctor on the ship told me to do.So everyone needs to stop calling me irresponsible.

Thirdly I find it great that some of you guys are nurses or have nurses in the family.But I have a question for you guys.Out of all of those people on the ventilators how many did you actually check to see if it was H1N1 or the regular flu? And I also have family members that are nurses and I've spoken to the doctors at my hospital and they all strongly reccomended that no one gets the vaccine bc it is so new and not tested nearly enough.They also mentioned the mercury levels were much higher than the regular flu shot's.

Out of all the people from my brother's,sister's,and friends schools most of them have had H1N1.That's probably around 2,400 cases that I know of and not a single death.So it's not that dangerous.

And finally I'd like to point out that when it's your time to die nothing is going to change that.So people need to stop worrying about dying from this because when it's your time there is no getting out of it.

I thought you were in the military Peco. Military members are required to get the vaccine. Also, if you read what I posted earlier, if you get the single dose vial, there is no thermisol, therefore there is no mercury. The form of mercury contained in thermisol is the non harmful kind, similar to the mercury found in seafood.

Considering that I see test results every.single.day about H1N1, I know it is more serious than the regular flu. USAMRID has an entire division dedicated to studying H1N1 right now, they've not had that in years.

Also I wanted to point out that many of the reactions i have seen to the H1N1 vaccine are from the nasal mist..Which isn't all that surprising since the nasal mist is weakened LIVE virus .Some people do get sick from it.Most of the reactions I have seen to the injectables have been site irritation and tenderness and that can be true of any Intramuscular vaccine.That is also why we do not give nasal mist vaccines to our immunosuppressed patients nor are we supposed to get them if we work with that patient population since the potential to shed live virus is still being fully studied.

Exactly this. I've seen several people with site tenderness and swelling from the H1N1 vaccine, but I've seen dozens and dozens of people very ill from NOT getting the shot. Ok, granted I haven't seen them in person but I've seen test results and medical records. I think the only serious reaction I've seen from the vaccine is someone who developed an egg allergy and didn't know it. Gave him some benadryl and fluids, he was fine the next day.

I was in the Army that is correct.I recieved a medical discharge earlier this year.So I didn't have to get the vaccine.

If there is the potiential to continue to shed the live virus from the nasal mist then why give it at all? Correct me if I am wrong since I have not see the vaccine being given or who is getting what (and I am sure you will) but I "thought" children were getting the "mist" and does this not require 2 dosesfrom what I have read here? So we give children who go to school with each other the mist and hope they do not shed the live virus? Also, do not think for a second you are now immune to H1N1. Flu vaccines are never a guarantee against illness. Viruses change quickly.

Someone repeating over and over agian how this and that person is in a vent and talk about brain damage etc, etc is just being a fear monger. Art from my understanding H1N1 is not as much an issue in sunny states because the sun provides people with Vit D naturally! Lucky you for 2 reasons ... sun shine and being able to go to WDW every weekend!

The children are the only ones that need 2 doses.Adults only need one dose of either vaccine.Now as far as shedding live virus,it is not fully studied.Which I have said.I never said the vaccine guarantees immunity, so I don't know where you are getting that from.I for one am not scared nor being a fear monger.Just passing on healthcare information.I am done with this thread .I was only trying to be informative , but as usual the posters around here seem to thrive on debate and misinformation as well as cutting others down.So go on ahead without me.I have to go to work.

Neverbeen, if you don't believe people on message boards, why don't you check out the CDC website, or the World Health Organization. The CDC has an estimate of how many people were hospitalized between April and October of this year due to complications from H1N1. If you'd like, you can pm me your email and I can email you a few professional journal articles that talk about the use of vents in cases of H1N1. Yes, it isn't terribly common for people with H1N1 to need vents, but it is way more common than people needing them for the normal influenza strains that float around. The primary threat with H1N1 comes from the weakening of your immune system, which allows viruses and bacteria that may normally not threaten your life to spread within your body.

Additionally, Vitamin D is known to aid in strengthening your immune system, however the amount needed to aid your immune system can be gained by spending just 10-15 minutes in the sun a few times a week. That is all your body needs to produce the amount of Vitamin D required. Taking too much Vitamin D can be harmful, so don't take any more than 1000 IU or 50 micrograms a day if you are over the age of 12 months.
