Hi! We are going to Disneyworld in September. I am concerned about my 5 year old being too hot. Is it ok to send him to the park each day in a pair of swim trunks? It seems this would be the coolest thing for him and it wouldn't be to uncomfortable if he got wet in them. Any thoughts?:confused3

Sounds perfect! There are plenty of "getting wet" experiences and your son will be able to really enjoy them all!

I'm planning on doing this with my son too! However I did read somewhere, on this board I think, that kids have to wear shirts and shorts at all times inside the parks. Anyone know if this is true or not??

Yes they have to wear shirts to walk around the parks. I wanted to say though that the swimsuit trunks might not be a good idea because the linings tend to rub delicate areas and I would imagine that all that walking might cause an irritation.

Agree. A pair of lightweight shorts that will dry quickly is porbably the best bet.

Also--pick up a disposable ice pack from the first aid section (squeeze to activiate) and carry one with you for when he gets too hot. My grandson loves those strips that are meant for fevers (in first aid section--the idea being that the child has a fever and you put on their forehead) my DGS wears them on his neck.

HAHA! My husband actually wore a pair of swim trunks and a shirt a few years ago. It was a nicer pair of swimtrunks and you couldn't totally tell they were swimtrunks, but he still did. I was soo busy getting my dd and myself ready that i didn't notice. ARGGGG!! Anyway, no one there seemed to care.

I just carried an extra change of clothes in a ziploc bag. Whenever he got wet i just changed his clothes and put the wet ones in the bag! Worked out great!!:)

I agree with the concern for thigh rubbing!

Especially the long board type trunks as the fabric part of the crotch hangs so low that the legs rub together = OUCH! My DS learned this the hard way.

I know this sounds funny but what I did was cut out the mesh inner liner and just had them wear underwear (mine preferred cotton boxers) under the swim trunks.

They dried out really quick during the summer down pours and after Kali River Rapids.

Try a pair of shorts at a sporting good shop (moisture wick shorts), they are designed to keep the sweat away from your body. My children get chaffed from their bathing suits just from swimming. They usually are not designed to dry quickly. Ice on the back of your neck and the back of your knees is the fastest way to cool off! Bring a ziploc baggie and ask for a cup of ice.

DS11 has about five pairs of shorts-style swim trunks that he wears as shorts with a t-shirt. They dry quickly and are great for summer. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between a lot of shorts, athletic shorts (like soccer shorts) and swim shorts. I grew up in Florida and we all lived in our swimsuits all summer long.

Maybe outside of Florida this would look weird - but my goodness, girls wore bikini tops and beach shorts to classes at FSU when I was there!

As I have fair-skinned kids, whenever I read about suggestions for tank type shirts, I cringe! I just think about that delicate shoulder skin getting burned! I know tanks may be a little cooler than regular t-shirts, but the pain of sunburn may make the rest of your trip more difficult.

Just my opinion for what it's worth! we still do sunscreen all of the time, but also try to limit exposure of skin to be on the safe side!

Been there done that big time, ouch!

True for kids through age 199.

Never heard of any objection to swim trunks at least as long as gym shorts.
