Turf Club was a new experience for us. We decided that we wanted to try and eat at a few resorts that we had not visited so this one was on our list.
We took a taxi from BLT/CR to SSR since it was a really rainy evening and we didn't feel like being at the mercy of Disney buses because I'm sure I would have melted with a little water!
Carriage House - main building for SSR:
We checked in at the Turf Club Bar & Grill Restaurant a little before our 7:40pm ADR. The waiting area was combined with the bar which had sofas and chairs scattered around the room in addition to a pool table and TV in an entertainment armoir. It was an interesting set up since it looked more like a rec room and less like a bar. Actually, there was no actual bar but rather an alcove that looked more like it was a coat check nook.
We were given a pager and waited about 15 minutes before we were called by the host. Uh… why did I have a pager?? When I asked the obvious question, the host said that they had paged me 5 times. Hmmm, we were sitting 15 feet away from the check-in podium. Well… here we were now.
Yeah, I smiled then but the stupid pager didn't work!
And a photo of Em.. just because it's my dining review and I don't HAVE to only include food photos!
We were led to a small table for two in the back next to a window. Sounds lovely right? In reality, it was a tiny table squeezed next to a four-top table for which you had to say, “excuse me, pardon me,” while you bumped into the people sitting at the other tables – there should never have been a table squeezed into that tiny space. I wondered how the waiter was going to deliver food to our table….. perhaps it was an acrobatic maneuver? Speaking of waiters, our server was Claude and he did a really good job.
Notice the bar menu on the table... order a cocktail, it may help make the meal more pleasant.
I'm still smiling because I haven't eaten the food yet.
The menu was limited and didn’t have anything that stood out as a “must have” item. I decided to go with the Roasted Free Range Chicken Breast ($17.99) which is prepared as follows; with red bliss potatoes, tomato, peas, fresh herbs and roasted broth. Em ordered the Turf Club Pasta ($15.99) which is made with garlic & olive oil. While we waited for our food, Claude delivered a basket of rolls with (apple?) spiced butter. The rolls were nothing exciting but they were a tasty start to an otherwise blah meal.
As for the food….honestly, my meal was no better than a frozen Healthy Choice entrée. The chicken was ok, if not a little uninspired. However, the peas, potatoes, and tomatoes were just dumped on the dish with no effort to give them some flavor or any artistic presentation. The roasted broth… I think that is a creative way to say it was a watery, oily, puddle of blandness. Where were the herbs that were highlighted in the description of the dish? Overall, a big disappointment.
Looking at the photo is does make for a lovely Christmas-ish inspired color scheme!
As for Em’s pasta dish, her complaint was that it was too garlicy. It was rigatoni pasta with spinach, artichoke, tomato, green olives and garlic tossed in olive oil. I had a bite and thought it was just ok – even if the pasta was a bit too al dente – and I like my pasta firm. Em did not end up eating much of this dish.
We decided to skip dessert since we were scared that we would be further disappointed so we decided to stop while we were ahead. However, our lovely Claude brought out a flaming cupcake for Em’s birthday with two spoons – nice! We split the cupcake which was the best part of the meal.
The seriously tasty cupcake!
The bill totaled $38.16 with TiW savings of $7.39. We can mark this place off of our list for future visits. The worst part was that I actually paid $18 to take a taxi to this place – what a waste of that money!
I confess, this was the most dissapointing meal we had the entire trip and I have been very harsh on Turf Club with this less than stellar review. I'm not normally so brutal in my reviews....don't worry, the nice Brenda will be back with the next review for Whispering Canyon Cafe!
