SWA - Book one way now?

Here's my situation - My travel dates are July 30 - Aug 7. SWA only shows flights through Aug.3. I would like to book ASAP before outbound flights start selling out.

I called this morning and the agent said they have no idea when the schedule will be extended. She suggested I book my outbound flight now as a one-way ticket, and then book the return flight when the date becomes available. I didn't even know you could do this! I was always under the impression you had to book round trip to get the low fair.

Ok, questions now that I have hung up with SWA! Would we have two separate reservations (one down, one back), or when I add the return flight do you think it would be added to my original reservation? Also, would we be more likely to be "flagged" if we are shown flying one-way?!? :earseek: I really would hate to see the whole family get "special attention" at the airport!

I really don't know why I am so unsure about doing this. I guess just because I've never done it this way before. I wish I could just book the whole trip at once! Any opinions out there!!!!

SWA is an airline that books everything as 'one-way' fares, even if you are booking a round trip.

If you are concerned about the good prices being snapped up, I would book the one-ways now, and do the same for your return.

Yes, you will have 2 different reservations, and I do not think there would be a way to combine them unless you cancelled, and started over.

You may very well get flagged for additional security, but to me that is not really a big deal (and I'm just back from a trip where my 7YO was pulled twice for additional security). It probably added an additional 10 minutes to us getting through the security checkpoint.

I would (and have) do this in a heartbeat to get the fares you are happy with.

Good Luck

We just got back from a trip where we had to book one way for each leg just for this reason. It was fine! No extra security flag and both legs were great! Book now if you want the best possible fares!!!

Thanks!! I'm feeling better about doing it this way now. I guess I was a bit leary since I have never done it this way before but I REALLY don't want to lose out on a good fare and time for our departure flight.

If you hadn't already thought of it, it couldn't hurt to take a spin around at other airlines that serve your airport and see if they have decent one-way fares back.
I did the same thing you are considering - I booked an Airtran flight from BWI to MCO. However they did not have return trips scheduled yet on my return date. So I went to Delta, and they had a one-way fare only about $5 more than what I paid Airtran to get down there. PLUS - Delta is a Magical Express partner, so I should be able to check my bags. I considered waiting a bit to see if I could get an Airtran fare back for a little less, but considering gas prices and all, I'm glad I locked in.
