I can easily fit my stuff for five days in a medium suit case. SW will let me take 2. Is it allowed and ethical to bring an empty suit case for souvinears????
If they are from the same set and can be nested, We have done that before. Take the full one and put it inside of the empty one, that way you only have to 'keep track of' and 'move' one bag around. Just make sure it doesn't go over the 50lbs. If it does, you can always 'un-nest' them at the airport. Have a great trip and buy lots of cool souvies!
One problem I could see is that empty suitcase could be crushed if they stack any others on top of it either on the plane or on the truck when taking it to/from the aircraft. If you can put the full one inside the empty one, that would rectify the problem.
As the US is the only country I can travel to with two suitcases, I always pack my clothes in the smaller one then put that inside the bigger one. That gives me heaps of room for all the stuff I tend to accumulate on holiday!
Definitely don't check an empty suitcase! It will be crushed and perhaps ruined by other luggage stacked on it in the luggage compartment of the plane.
Take a duffel bag or sports bag of some kind, fold it small, and pack it in your main suitcase.
When you come home, put only clothes and non-fragile items in the duffel, since it will give less protection than a rigid or reinforced suitcase. Put the souvenirs in the rigid suitcase.
