I heard a report this a.m. that the suspect John Mohammed was stopped for driving suspiciously on Oct. 8. They ran his info through the criminal records and nothing showed up so they let him go. He was driving a station wagon at the time I think they said.

Does anyone have more info on this?

I don't know Deb. I didn't really catch all of the report. It was on Good Morning America and I was getting kids ready for school. I was hoping someone may have heard it.

It would be pretty sad if they had this guy back on the 8th and let him go.

There is a brief blurb on the CNN site

•A source said the U.S. Marshals Service was able to connect Muhammad with the car and license plate through information filed by officers from an October 8 traffic stop in Baltimore, Maryland. Muhammad was sleeping in his car at the time. The officers were concerned that his driver's license was from Washington state and the vehicle tag was from New Jersey.

It doesn't really give enough information to draw conclusions, but it does raise some questions in my mind. It was my understanding that there was already a Federal Warrant for Firearms charges out on John Muhammad. If this is true - it is a shame that it didn't raise more of a red flag.

I wonder if the mix up happened because of the other name he used: John Williams.

Just to clear you up on something when you run a subject NCIC it only checks wants and warrants on the subject, it doesn't tell you if he has a criminal history or not. That is totally different to run a criminal history.

Should we actually be GLAD he had been stopped earlier? If not, once they had determined who he was, would they have known to look for that car? I'm thinking how awful it would be to be on the lookout for these men and not be able to find them.

The 'red flag' the officer noted back on Oct. 8th may actually have been a huge break in being able to catch these guys quickly and peacefully.

And alot of times a warrant will be issued but isnt always entered into the system right away so a check may not have revealed that he was wanted. As in regards to his criminal history if you do a check and find out that doesnt matter that much as most people who get stopped by police have a prior criminal record and while its good to know for officer safety that in and of itself isnt probable cause to arrest someone or search them, more is needed.
