Looking for some sushi. Noticed that CA Grill has it.
Prices on another web site that provides menus has a California roll at $ 22.
Pretty steep for a Cali roll when most are around $ 5-8.
Is it something special... feeds a family of 4 or just high because it's CA Grill.
Thanks for any advise.

They have sushi at Kona cafe & at the sushi bar right outside (same sushi) at the Polynesian. Much cheaper, yet still very good. We just had it on our last trip 2 weeks ago. So if you want a sushi fix and don't want to spend as much as Cali Grill - which is good too, I would go to Kona or just the sushi bar.
Cali Grill (and Kona) give about the same portion. I just think its higher at Cali Grill because its cali grill. Although in general I do think the signatures have better food.

well, compared to typical California roles (which often use the fake crab or low quality crab) the Cali-grill California role uses jumbo lump crab meat

so it is a higher quality role compared to a typical sushi place.

I am sure the price is also upped a bit by being at the Cali-grill, but it is mostly due to the quality of the ingredients

Kimonos Sushi Bar at the Swan is just as good IMO and more reasonably priced. They have a huge selection.

Ca Grill has very good sushi but you are paying to dine at Ca Grill.

Yes, I'm sure you could pay less for the same elsewhere but it is presented so beatifully and it seems you get a little more at CG. We know we are paying a premium but just get over that and enjoy the food and the atmosphere especially since we are usually celebrating a special occasion.

Never compare your local sushi joint to California Grill. CG charges $22 because a good portion of that money is going to pay 60,000 employees' salaries, nighttime fireworks spectaculars and a complimentary transportation system across 40 square miles. I'll bet your local sushi joint doesn't have more than 20 employees max.

It still surprises me how many people actually think $22 goes entirely back into the restaurant or even the hotel where they're staying. Only a small fraction does. The rest is divvied out across the entire resort complex. If you go to WDW, and enjoy the rides, shows and attractions, getting the higher quality $22 Cali roll at CG is supporting those things that turns your trip into a vacation. Enjoy.

You have to remember you are at WDW and you are paying for the atmosphere of Cali grill. ;)

I did not know that California Grill subsidizes the salaries of 60,000 employees, the fireworks and a 40 square mile transportation system!

Just curious -- is that really how WDW does its accounting? Does every business have to pay a service fee for other employees/benefits, for transportation and for the fireworks? Interesting way to do accounting if that's the case. I have not read their publicly-available financial statements. But, I would be very surprised if this is accurate.

I think a better way to explain why the sushi is so expensive might be:

California Roll: $22
Table from which you can watch the MK fireworks: priceless.

It seems very unlikely that Disney runs WDW in such a way that every menu item at every restaurant is priced in such a way so as to subsidize the costs of the rest of WDW.

Much more likely is that CG (and every other restaurant at WDW) is run as an individial profit center and that restaurants price their items based based upon what they think the market will bear for the type of restaurant that it is and the type of food that the restaurant offers (with a premium price, of course, due to it being in WDW and having a semi-captive audience).

California Grill has one of the top sushi chefs in the country. I can say from experience of having MANY sushi rolls at CG, that it is excellent and well worth the price! :cool1:

CG has one of the best sushi place in the US. I lived in Japan and avid sushi lover so I know what real sushi supposed taste like.... I am sad to say that most sushi places are not good quality sushi. However, each time I went CG had amazing sushi so I think it's well worth the price for the quality. And I think eating sushi and seating by window to watch Wishes is small price. :goodvibes
