Susan Boyle loses 'Britain's Got Talent'!

I know she can sing a heck of a lot better than I.

Now those who are critical. Word is Simon is giving her a contract and the first CD will be released here in the usa first. I guess he sees something in her. And that guy knows how to make money.

Those of us who enjoyed her will be get pleasure from our money when we buy the CD. Those who don't....will save their money.

Never thought she was any good either.

Sat here and watched the show last night, there were quite a few great acts!
I'm glad Susan Boyle didnt win-because she has a career in front of her anyway and an album to make.
Diversity were just fantastic! Flawless - the other dance group were great also, Stavros Flatley again were just so funny!!
what a great night of telly!! :thumbsup2

I think she has a nice voice. I don't think it is spectacular. I know people, not in show business, that sing as well. I think a lot of her appeal came because she was not what people expected. They judged her by her appearance and were pleasantly surprised when she started to sing. I'm very glad she had a good time and got to fulfill a dream.

I agree exactly. The truth is while she's a good singer - if she's have been some normal pretty, slim little 20-30 something she wouldn't have even as made it as far as the judges. The producers would have turned her away at the gate as singers like that are two a penny

C'mon lets be honest it is her back story and appearance which has led to all this hype - the shock factor that someone so plain could have a beautiful voice.
But going on talent there were more talented people in the competition. I mean do we even know if her resume goes much further than I Dreamed a Dream - the only other song was Memory which was extremely shaky - is I Dreamed a Dream just a well perfected song that she has sang for so long :confused3

I still don't quite understand how she made BREAKING NEWS on CNN - she seems to have a lot more fans over in the US than the UK.

Edited to say...if anyone was interested the final last night peaked with 19.2 million viewers - that's like a 3rd of the UK population on the hottest day of the year! Sky high ratings.

I dislike those shows. You can't compare apples and oranges. That would be like putting Pavarotti and Baryshnikov on a stage and telling people to choose which is more talented.

This is why I dislike competitions. People repeatedly rehearse the same 1 or 2 songs or 1 or 2 dances day after day for months to the point they could do it backward. They get on stage and have near perfection. It is not a clear representation of their overall talent. In many cases, the songs and dances chosen are the ones that work best with their ability.

You make a good point, and the winner Diversity performed 3 total different routines during BGT both performed to perfection.

Susan performed one song well, and another adequately. Which is why I fail to understand why people feel so strongly she should have won.

To back up my earlier posts that said she seemed relieved to win see this video of the results:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMz03DnirQY&feature=channel

As someone comments on the video - she seems visibly very shaken during the as ever long draw out reveal of the winner - shaken and sweating - as A
Ant and Dec say 'The winner is...' she mumbles under her breath 'Diversity'
Then as they are announced - see how happy she is - that is not the fake contrived smile you normally see she was genuinely happy for them

I agree completely, and made the same point in a thread on another forum recently, specifically with regard to American Idol. I feel that AI has been allowing itself to spread beyond its focused pop music core, by pitting country artists against hard rock artists, for example. The vote becomes a referendum on the genres, not on the skills of the performers to satisfy the fundamentals of their specific genre. (It seems to me, sometimes, that some folks are of two minds: When their preferred genre wins, then the competition is fair; when their preferred genre loses, then the competition is unfair. :rotfl: )

I would love to see AI go back to its original intent, and choose only pop music competitors... let's find the best pop music idol. And that's despite the fact that I'm a rock music fan, first and foremost.

It was nice to see Susan's personality come back after she lost. She was quite reserved during the interviews after she performed. I felt bad as I think all the media hurt her in the long run and it wasn't really her fault. She didn't expect the world to become obsessed with her. She got overexposed quickly. I am sure she will get a record deal out of this, but I hope she gets her wish to sing for the queen one day.
I also read she had a cold when she sang Memories and admitted that the beginning was very shaky.
I'm not sure where Diversity can go after this so I guess it's good they won.
If Susan does a cover of I Dreamed a Dream on her CD, I can't see it doing badly. I know I'd buy it just for that song. Her version is beautiful.
I'm sure she is relieved that it's finally over now.

I think a lot of the appeal that Susan Boyle has is in actually seeing her perform. You look at her, and just don't expect to hear her sing like that. BUT, I also don't think she is quite as good when you can't see her. If you only listen to her voice, without realizing who the voice is coming from, suddenly she seems not quite as good. I loved watching her perform (via Youtube), but to be honest, I'm not quite as impressed with her as I was with last years winner Paul Potts. He was another diamond in the rough kind of performer. Another person that you look at, and think what's he doing up there, but when he sang, your mouth just dropped open. The difference though, between him and Susan, is the fact that he sounds just as good when you can't see him. If you only listen to his singing, you'd think you were listening to one of the 3 tenors.

Susan Boyle seems like a great lady, and I'm so glad that she made it as far as she did, and I think she has a great career in front of her, but I just don't think that she is as good as she seems to be when you are watching her - at least not yet. With some professional training who knows what she is capable of doing. It should be fun to see what happens to her in the coming years.

I listened to her without seeing her and I still liked her music. Actually, that's how I prefer to listen to somone by closing my eyes when they are on tv. I hope she does a cd with lots of theatrical songs. That's the genre I love and I think she will do great with that.

She definately needs to work with a professional to fine tune her pipe. She does well though without any coach.

I didn't like Paul Potts because I don't like male singers in that genre. I'm not going to hold that against him though and wish he didn't win.

Being a chubby, fairly plain-looking middle-aged woman myself, I had no expectation that Susan Boyle would win...we are a youth and looks focused world.

Have you seen Paul Potts? He won three years ago, he is not young and he is not even remotly good looking.

I posted on an earlier Susan Boyle thread about Diversity being her competition. I like that they won and I would have been happy if either had come in first, but I don't think she didn't win because of her looks. There were at least 5 acts that would sell out any show. And if it was all about youth and looks Shaun Smith would have won hands down. Complete hot guy with the voice of gold.

Things not looking good for Susan after being admitted to the Priory yesterday

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/britainsgottalent/a157880/boyle-could-miss-bgt-tour-us-trip.html

Poor woman :( I really feel for her, all the rags that call themselves 'newspapers' are busy of course blaming everyone but themselves for her situation. I really do not think the BGT tour, doing an albulm, promoting it in the US is reight for her at this time, she's just not ready and able for it.

Whether you like her singing or not (personally, I do), I think she was just not able to handle the sudden, intense, unrelenting pressure. Remember, she lived a very quiet, very sheltered life, taking care of her aged mother and after that, living alone with her cat. And I think people did not fully realize the extent and significance of her early brain damage and learning disablities, which I think accounted for some of her unusual behaviors - attempting to walk off the stage, appearing in public with her pants zipper unzipped, etc.

Fame is a two edged sword, and Susan was just ill-equiped to cope with all of it at once.

I truly hope that someone can help her get through this. I think if the only thing she had to deal with was getting on a stage and singing her heart out, she would be fine.

So true.

We know (or the media reports) that Susan Boyle was deprived of oxygen at birth, has a significant learning disability, and that she was sheltered and lived at home with her parents. Watching her behavior during interviews, she strikes me as having the characteristics of someone with mild mental retardation and/or potentially within the autism spectrum/asperger's syndrome. This does not undercut or take away from her obvious talent, but it does bring into question whether she received adequate care/protection.

Any parent of a child with such a disability would tell you that such tremendous pressure would be extremely difficult for a typical adult to bear, much less someone who may have difficulty in social situations and in dealing with social pressure. These recent events do not surprise me in the least- I almost expected such an outcome, and I think it would be even worse if she had won.
I wonder where her family is, if they provided sufficient information to the show, and if the show heeded the warning/advise.

That being said, there is no reason that Ms. Boyle cannot have a career- it wouldn't be as high powered as a mega star, by any means, but with a good support system she could be fine.

I will keep Ms. Boyle in my family's prayers. She has a wonderful gift in her voice....may those around her help her use her gift rather than exploit and damage her!
