I think she has a nice voice. I don't think it is spectacular. I know people, not in show business, that sing as well. I think a lot of her appeal came because she was not what people expected. They judged her by her appearance and were pleasantly surprised when she started to sing. I'm very glad she had a good time and got to fulfill a dream.

...... is I Dreamed a Dream just a well perfected song that she has sang for so long![]()
This is why I dislike competitions. People repeatedly rehearse the same 1 or 2 songs or 1 or 2 dances day after day for months to the point they could do it backward. They get on stage and have near perfection. It is not a clear representation of their overall talent. In many cases, the songs and dances chosen are the ones that work best with their ability.
I agree completely, and made the same point in a thread on another forum recently, specifically with regard to American Idol. I feel that AI has been allowing itself to spread beyond its focused pop music core, by pitting country artists against hard rock artists, for example. The vote becomes a referendum on the genres, not on the skills of the performers to satisfy the fundamentals of their specific genre. (It seems to me, sometimes, that some folks are of two minds: When their preferred genre wins, then the competition is fair; when their preferred genre loses, then the competition is unfair.I dislike those shows. You can't compare apples and oranges. That would be like putting Pavarotti and Baryshnikov on a stage and telling people to choose which is more talented.
)I think a lot of the appeal that Susan Boyle has is in actually seeing her perform. You look at her, and just don't expect to hear her sing like that. BUT, I also don't think she is quite as good when you can't see her. If you only listen to her voice, without realizing who the voice is coming from, suddenly she seems not quite as good. I loved watching her perform (via Youtube), but to be honest, I'm not quite as impressed with her as I was with last years winner Paul Potts. He was another diamond in the rough kind of performer. Another person that you look at, and think what's he doing up there, but when he sang, your mouth just dropped open. The difference though, between him and Susan, is the fact that he sounds just as good when you can't see him. If you only listen to his singing, you'd think you were listening to one of the 3 tenors.
Susan Boyle seems like a great lady, and I'm so glad that she made it as far as she did, and I think she has a great career in front of her, but I just don't think that she is as good as she seems to be when you are watching her - at least not yet. With some professional training who knows what she is capable of doing. It should be fun to see what happens to her in the coming years.
Being a chubby, fairly plain-looking middle-aged woman myself, I had no expectation that Susan Boyle would win...we are a youth and looks focused world.
Have you seen Paul Potts? He won three years ago, he is not young and he is not even remotly good looking.
I really feel for her, all the rags that call themselves 'newspapers' are busy of course blaming everyone but themselves for her situation. I really do not think the BGT tour, doing an albulm, promoting it in the US is reight for her at this time, she's just not ready and able for it.I dislike those shows. You can't compare apples and oranges. That would be like putting Pavarotti and Baryshnikov on a stage and telling people to choose which is more talented.
AmenI will keep Ms. Boyle in my family's prayers. She has a wonderful gift in her voice....may those around her help her use her gift rather than exploit and damage her!
