Anyone have any info on this area? We are seriously thinking of buying a 2nd home here in the very near future. I'm looking for somewhere to spend a few wks per year and eventually retire there.

Does it get as much traffic as Myrtle Beach? We won't be right on the beach but w/in 10 miles or less (hoping). Safe town?

thanks, Kim

Can't say that Surfside is more or less safe than any other place. In recent years the traffic has become nearly as bad as Myrtle Beach. It is more quiet than Myrtle Beach due to the lack of attractions, nevertheless tourists have inundated Surfside (and the Super Wal-Mart which seems to be the most popular attraction in the area.)

We all have personal preferences and I do not wish to question yours or sway your opinion. In my opinion, the Grand Strand area is void of beauty and charm. I avoid it and have a difficult time understanding why so many people choose to vacation there. Mt. Pleasant, Charleston, Johns Island and Edisto are far superior for retirement.

In any event, many choose to retire in the Grand Strand area so there must be something that I am missing. I hope you enjoy exploring the SC coast.

I am going to agree with the previous poster, but I do like to vacation in Myrtle Beach because I have family and friends there and there is a lot to do. I also like going to quiet beaches, but there is much more in MB for my kids. Plus my friends and I like going to Broadway at the Beach.

If you go there to check things out, why not also drive to Ocean Isle Beach and Calabash in North Carolina to check things out there. Much quieter, but yet close to North Myrtle Beach.

There is a new developement in that area. Its where the military base use to be. It is call Market Commons in Myrtle beach. It is a fantastic place!!!!! Lots of shops, resturants, apartments, townhouses, small neighborhoods in the area. They have a lot of events going on especially during the summer. Check it out! You will love it!! :)

We have stayed in Surfside and Garden City for several summers. We love it there. It's a nice, quiet little community but close enough to Myrtle Beach for entertainment when you feel the need. The beach is very nice. We didn't have any problems with traffic and we always go during peak summer season.

We always stay on the ocean so I'm not sure what the rest of the area is like.

We love Surfside. As a matter of fact I just got home from there Tuesday night. We like it because it quieter than Myrtle Beach. Granted there is not a lot of stuff to do within walking distance like there is on the strip in Myrtle. But Myrtle Beach is less than 10 mins away. We went to Myrtle Beach several times and went to Broad Way at the Beach several times. There is a small Disney store there that was having a pretty good sale while we were there. We always stay in a nice gated community called Oceanside Villiage. IT is a nice and quiet place just down the street from Ocean Lakes. And the Bi-Lo is just across the street.

Also the only times I have seen the traffic get really bad is on Saturdays when everybody is coming in or leaving. And I have even been there during both bike weeks and it wasn't bad. But stay away from the Walmart on Saturday or Sunday and you are good to go.

I have freinds who have owned a 2nd home (condo) there for years and they adore it. I don't believe it gets as much traffic a Myrtle Beach. I have never been there, but it looks quite nice form what I have seen in pictures.
