There was a drunk driving homicide(I refuse to say accident) here in Boston last night and I have just learned that a friends son was the victim. He was simply mowed down .

His name was James Grabowski, I work with his Dad Capt Dan Grabowski/Mass State Police. The pain for this family must be excruciating they are very close and Dan dotes on his boys. He lives for them.

Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers they are going to need it to get through.

Kelley Tuthill Reports On Charges

NewsCenter 5's Kelley Tuthill reported that a West Newbury, Mass., Northeastern University student was killed when a sport utility vehicle plowed into a crowd of people near the university.

Stanley Filoma, 24, of Mattapan, allegedly backed into a crowd of revelers who were on Symphony Street celebrating the team's victory. Filoma allegedly struck several pedestrians, and then fled the scene, killing one person. The victim has been identified as James Grabowski, 21. He was the son of State Police Captain Daniel Grabowski.

Filoma appeared in Roxbury District Court Monday morning to face a variety of charges including motor vehicle homicide while under the influence, driving to endanger, and leaving the scene of an accident and may face additional charges.

"The officers observed as the Land Cruiser was put in reverse and accelerated in reverse at a high rate of speed nearly striking the officers, causing one of them to jump out of the way for his safety," said district attorney spokesman David Procopio.

Police say Filoma then accelerated forward, striking a number of pedestrians, including Grabowski. Three others were injured, one critically. One of the people hurt was Jason Stackiewicz, 21, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Filmona was arrested after he allegedly hit a taxi.

"He was a scared young guy who panicked, essentially, and that is all that happened. He is very frightened. He is sorry this guy died. But he is just a frightened young man right now and doesn't have much else to say, " said defense attorney Steve Sack.

Police responded to several post-game problems. Three men were arrested on Hemmingway Street for malicious destruction of property over $250. Two men were allegedly jumping on cars and one allegedly broke a car window.

"Everyone is profoundly sad this morning. What should have been a happy night and a celebratory event was marred by a fatality, in relation to this case. And in relation to the vandalism case, (the event) was marred by some stupid behavior by celebrants who should have known better," said Procopio.

Grabowski's parents were comforted in their West Newbury home by friends and family.

The family's neighbors are stunned.

"(The family is) very, very nice. They are a wonderful, quiet family. Very, very sweet," said neighbor Lauren Roland.

Filoma, a Haitian immigrant, was held by the court on $10,000 cash bail.

:(

My deepest sympathy to that family. How tragic. :(

This story has been making me feel so sick all day!!! What a tragic waste. And the driver's attorney saying that he, the driver, was so sad and upset that the kid died!! That he was just a scared kid that ran out of fear. Yeah, sure. According to one report his blood alchohol level was still waaay elevated 3 hours after they arrested him!!! I'm remembering the poor family in my prayers. Please let them know that we are praying for them.

Bless this young man :( I have him and his family in my prayers. Thanks for letting us know, TMom :(

What a horrible waste of both young lives. My prayers are with the Grabowsky family. I never understand why this riot behavior happens and how it can be considered a celebration. How very sad.

I am at a total loss for words. Prayers for the family at this needless loss of a young life.

How tragic and senseless. His family will be in my prayers.

We've been watching Channel 7 tonight and were so upset at this story. So sad and senseless.
I'm so sorry for that family.....sending prayers.

((hugs)) to you Tiggersmom......

I can only imagine the pain the family is going through. Pass on to the family my family holds them in our prayers.

Very sad story. It is in all the papers today. I will keep the family in my thoughts and prayers. I graduated from Northeastern, so I know the area. Way too many crazy people around. This was totally senseless, very sad.

I was brought to tears. I can't imagine losing my son to such a senseless tragedy.

The other young man should never be allowed to drive again.

To lose a child in such a senseless tragic way, I just don't know how you could ever recover. The unbearable rage his poor parents must be feeling. I'll pray for them.

I have no words.

My brother was involved in an accident in S. Carolina after the SB last night. Luckily it was only his car invovled and he is ok. One of the two passangers is still in the hospital with two broken ribs and a dislocated hip that has been relocated. He will be released tomorrow...

This story hits me so hard because my generally good little brother could have caused something so horrible as well..... I don't get it. Our family is trying to grasp this....

Thank you all for expressions of sorrow.

Another of those reasons I HATE the superbowl. :(

Prayers for the family, and something I won't say here (but sure isn't P&PD) for the drunk.
