Sunshine Protection Act

Wait, hold on.

Atlantic Time is UTC-4.
Eastern Standared Time is UTC-5; DAYLIGHT TIME is UTC-4.

Florida wants to always be in Daylight Saving Time, so why not just join the Atlantic Time Zone and not do Daylight Saving, like Massachusetts and Maine want to? Instead of making their own time zone?

I am totally against this. To stay on DST all year round means that'd we be on EST for half the year and in the Atlantic Standard timezone the other half. That is just too dumb.
As posted earlier in this thread: Arizona spends part of the year on Mountain Time, and the other part on Pacific Time. Saying this proposed change is dumb, isn't necessarily a fair assessment.
Oh, wait, ok.

So Maine and Massachusetts want to join the AST (UTC-4) time zone. To go along with parts of Canada and South America. What about Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and RI? They should probably all stick together.

No and yes. Each state is an independently governed entity and should be able to make autonomous decisions. For some silly reason, yeah, this change has to be regional. I say, just...never mind, prohibited topic :D.

Not sure I was making some sort of factual assessment, just stating my opinion. I live here and I would find it to be very dumb to have to adjust time zones like that just so that the clock didn't change and so that tourists could have daylight longer. It would be frustrating to me and my family, and we are all wondering where the idea came from as none of us had heard a thing about it until it made the news this week. So when exactly did they discuss it with the people that actually live here? To me making a change this big and not discussing it with the people that it will affect every day is - dumb.

Arizona has tourists, too; but like florida, tourists are greatly outnumbered by residents. I don't think it's because of tourism.

Oh, I would be interested in hearing what the actual reasoning behing the FL legislator voting for this change were. Do you have any information that states that it wasn't to support more money being spent during the "extra" daylight hour at night? Because I haven't seen a single thing that would benefit the actual FL residents who live and work here, and have seen numerous mentions of the money that people will spend while they are out and about, but perhaps I am simply missing that information.

I am genuinely shocked at the number of computer people here saying it will be a problem. Almost all computer programs I've interacted with (and in 20+ years as an engineer, it's been quite a lot) use UTC as their time. And in the user settings, you just chose UTC+4 or UTC+5. What the clocks say on the wall in Florida isn't an issue for the computers with which I interact. Not saying I doubt that there are computer programs for which this will be a problem, but I'm really surprised to hear it.

IIRC, it wasn't even the entire state (is that still the case today?).

I recall having a conversation with someone we worked with that was located in Indiana - trying to explain to them DST was a nightmare. :headache:

Right - it wasn't the whole state! I went to college in the part of the state that followed FUIT (f'ed up Indiana Time) as we affectionately called it. One of my favorite West Wing episodes was when the gang missed the plane because they were on the wrong time zone.

Having lived in Arizona, and now living in Florida, i hope they do this. Personally i think the whole 'changing all your clocks twice a year' thing is dumb. Having it be a certain time at the same time all year just seems more logical to me.

here it is Wednesday and I am still thrown off. Just made a cup of coffee(big no-no for me this late)so I dont crash while making dinner and stuff I have to accomplish later. DH said he was groggy driving home yesterday. I believe the studies on the affects. Way back when in the stome ages, people worked hard, no doubt, but these days you never get to turn yourself "off" so things like losing an hour can really wreak havoc.

It's definitely kicking my butt today. I made early morning dental appointments across town for my daughter and me today (hoping to minimize time out of school). I forgot time would be changing just days before needing to be up and out so early today. My daughter was not happy with me this morning! I can't say I was very happy with me either. ;)

Great, I'm in Chicago. That means two hour difference when I go.

I'm in Alabama. And it will be a two difference when I go.

Basically, we will move one hour when we cross into Georgia, then another when we cross into Florida.
Yikes! We are in AL also, so when we go in Dec. later this year, we will lose 2 hours and not just 1 ?!?
I was hoping we could eat a late dinner at Boma when we arrived, but I guess that will be out of the question now!
