Sunshine, food and fun...a perfect March Break adventure! A March '22 trip report! Back from PEI 08/09

Tonight was the night! Our long anticipated dinner at Flying Fish...we had been planning on dining there for years but it had never quite worked out. Now we were finally getting to go!

Glad you got to do that after waiting so long.

even the flatware was themed.

I like that!

The lights were spectacular...the blue glass represented the ocean and the fish are all hand blown glass. It is stunning!

Gorgeous. Might be worth the trip just for that.

Our server was Stephanie and she was amazing! Attentive without hovering, knowledgeable and funny. Really you couldn't ask for a better server!

She sounds great.

The bread and butter were incredible...the butter was house made with black sea salt and the bread was a potato bread with seaweed. So good!

The butter sounds good, but I cannot imagine what that bread tasted like. Seaweed in bread! Huh!

I picked the oak grilled romaine with cherry tomatoes and white balsamic. I had never had grilled romaine before and I really enjoyed it.

I've had it and liked it.

My entree choice was the Plancha seared scallops ~ Savory Grits, Sweet Corn and Peppadew Emulsion. These were everything I dreamt about and I could have happily licked the plate clean.

Did you restrain yourself because it was a fancy schmancy restaurant??

I was enjoying every single moment of this beautiful evening!

Stephanie paced our meals perfectly. We never felt rushed, yet as soon as we thought of something, she was there to help.

She sounds like the perfect server.

We chose to have coffee and dessert. Bill won this category hands down by choosing the Cocoa Breach (Vanilla Custard, Chocolate Bavarois, Feuillentine Crunch). The idea was that you poured the warm chocolate sauce over the chocolate shell, then discovering the dessert within. Bill declared it the best dessert he has ever enjoyed.

We absolutely loved Flying Fish and will definitely choose to dine there again. The bill was not for the faint of heart, coming in at just under $250 USD before tip. I left a very generous tip for Stephanie as her service was incredible.

Exceptional service requires an exceptional tip.

I'm so glad you wrote about this. I've only read one other review and... it was pretty much the opposite experience.

I'll give them a chance and maybe try it some day.

Soon enough, one of these little darlings was in my hand and may have been followed by a second!

Eating dried seaweed is a thing here. More so for mine and my parents generation. My kids think it’s gross . My father loved a bag of dulse and my mother-in-law was known to make a dulse sandwich ( which if I’m honest sounds a bit yuck to me ). It’s sold in corner shops in wee bags or in fruit and veg shops. Used to be paper bags which somehow made it taste nicer

I did not know this but it makes sense. I will too in cash in future. So happy you had an excellent meal and server in FF. It truly is a beautiful restaurant and we’ve always had great food there. The desserts really do stand out from the usual! Can’t think of any way better to end the night and the trip than shutting down the lounge with friends!

We have seaweed here too, and while I've tried it, I can't say that I was thrilled with it. Had it on sushi, of course and with rice and Spam (in Hawaii, where that's a thing) and enjoyed that, but... by itself? Or a sandwich? While I won't run from it... I won't run to it either.

Seaweed is harvested on the north west shores of PEI as well. I've heard of people eating it when I was growing up but I never did. Now my kindergarteners eat seaweed as a snack on the daily!

Yes, in my quest to travel with only a carry on, I decided to get an Owner's Locker to store all my park essentials in.

I'll never be able to have just a carry on unless I plan to go back the next day.

I think I will love the convenience of not having to wait at the carousel for checked luggage.

As I said I will never have that convenience.

We were interested in checking out the Ganachery as we had heard good things. We picked up six of their chocolate ganache squares in different flavours.

I don't remember if we tried the squares or just bought their chocolate bars. I thought they were delicious, but I also didn't pay attention to how much they cost.

We had a bit of a stressful afternoon coming up as we had to complete our proctored Covid tests for our flight the following day. Luckily everything went well but having to go through all that really puts a damper on your day.

I can see how that would not be fun, and make things stressful.

I am SO thankful Canada dropped this requirement for entry into the country by air and really hope the US does soon too.

Kara @paradesintherain had been at MK with friends and made the trip over to OKW to meet up! We headed to the Gurgling Suitcase to grab drinks and plopped down under a shady umbrella to chat the next hour away.

I love grilled romaine. Many years ago CA F&W offered the Napa Rose cooking school and that was one of the first dishes that I learned there.

Bill chose the seafood pearl pasta (Shrimp, Lobster, Scallops, Clams and Mussels) and was equally thrilled with his meal.

I would take his, that sounds super good!

The option available to me was the 50th celebration midnight lemon (Fresh Berries, Crispy Meringue and Sweet Lemon). This was really good but I must admit I was having serious chocolate envy.

This is the awesome Bellevue Cosmopolitan (Belvedere Vodka, Grand Marnier, and Cranberry Juice) which went down very well.

It's a lot easier for me in the summer as I tend to wear skorts with a tank top to the parks. They roll up nice and small. I also love the park inspired dresses from Ambrie. I will bring a few dressier things if I am planning on a nice TS meal. I have started using the compression packing cubes and they really help as well.

I tend to pay attention to price everywhere as we add on an additional 30% with the exchange rate. It really has to be worth it for me.

They have a great steak too as well as chicken and a vegetarian option. Seafood is definitely the star of the show though. You know the funny thing...I grew up in Prince Edward Island which is world renowned for seafood but I hated all fish until I was in my late 20's. I like most now but still won't eat lobster, shrimp, mussels etc. Bill on the other hand will eat ALL the seafood!

It was great fun hanging out with Chad and Renee. They are really super people.
