Although we're actually going to Disneyland, I thought I might get a broader range of experiences by posting here! Okay, so, we're going to Disneyland at the end of May with our 4 kids. When we go, our youngest will be about 3 1/2 months old. While we'll do everything we can to keep him covered and not exposed to the sun, I know it's not always possible. So, since most sunscreens say to talk with a doctor for kids under six months, I was wondering if anyone has used sunscreen for a child so small and if so what kind.

I plan on asking his doctor at his next appointment, but just wondering what others have done in a similar situation.

You would think living in Hawaii I would know this answer, but we the time we spend outside is usually at night or early morning when it's a lot cooler.

Thank you!!

When my son was that little, I kept him out of the sun. I found some clothing that had a block in it and always used a hat. Once, we hooked an umbrella up to his stroller so we could pivot it allowing air to move but keeping the sun out. I've never seen anything for under 6 months. I think I'd consult a dermatologist unless your peds have good experience and they might-living in Hawaii. You could call the doctor's office.

We'll for sure be talking to his doctor and I hadn't even thought about a dermatologist.

I really like the idea of the umbrella. I have seen them around and I think it would work great. Thanks for the suggestions.

Mods - could you please move this thread? I actually meant to post this on the Disney for Families board.

Thanks!

We took our son to the world at four months and we used some sunscreen (with peds approval). We used neutrogena kids sunblock SPF 70. There's a standard lotion and a stick option. We found them in the baby section of target.

We only put it on his legs, back of his neck, etc. We kept it off his face and hands, since they were always in his mouth!

We went to Disneyland in early June a few years ago. One thing we found out is that May and June are known as May Gray and June Gloom. It is more cloudy and can be somewhat rainy during that time.

Not sure if that is really the case, but we found it cloudy when we were there.

I have always applied at an early age with my boys. I have had some skin scares and have to be checked out every 6 months so it is serious.

First check with your child's doctor-mine never had an issue and were happy that we brought it up.

There is a website that I use that test the toxic levels of the chemical in sunscreen as well as the effectivness.I use ewg.org, there are some other sites as well.

We have found that we love California Baby-but since we now have3 boys and not so little any more -we use Johnson and Johnson. They both have good ratings. CA Baby(my favorite) has a better rating but way more expensive. Target carries it for about $20 where J &J is $9.

Like I said my kids and I have skin issues so its good that you ask-I see so many that are in the parks and burned to a crisp.

My kids ped said to apply it at an early age.I would buy an all natural/gentle type of sunscreen.

I took my son to the beach at 4 months old. I talked to his doctor about sunscreen. His comment was that it is just not tested on infants under 6 months. That is why it states not to use it for children younger than this. It does not mean that it will necessarily harm babies younger than 6 months. He told me that there would be far more harm done if we chose not to use sunscreen and he was burned, than taking the small risk of a skin reaction.

Certainly talk to your pediatrician..he/she may have better options too.
