Can I buy a Sunpass now for my December trip even though I live in PA and will be renting a car? I hope I can do this and go online with the rental car info on my Iphone to update the license plate. I would prefer the Glass attached one and then rip it off when i am done. ANy thoughts or knowledge?

Thanks

Yes you can purchase it online at www.sunpass.com. The glass attached pass will not work once it is removed from the car.

We purchased a Sunpass Transponder 3 years ago because we travel to Florida a couple of times a year....love it! We have it set up with a credit card to automatically add a certain amount as necessary.

Same here - I think I've used mine 7 times now...it's certainly paid for itself and I love being able to just zip through the express lanes...and not worry about taking unstaffed exits when I venture offsite.

:goodvibesExactly!!

I used my personal car's plate for the ID online, and it is setup to allow me to temporarily change the assigned vehicle to a rental (by calling or on the website), so if the transponder doesn't read it, I will still get the bill vice the rental car company (avoiding extra fees).

The one you want is the box. It has suction cups to make it easy to transfer between vehicles and you can also get (free) a sleeve for it, so it won't read if you prefer to pay cash.

If you do forget or wait until you are in Florida, they sell the transponders in Publix (where shopping is a pleasure ;) ).

Thanks all for your help. I am going to order one so I have it for our many trips in the future.

Absolutely right!

We purchased a sunpass transponder in 2008. Best thing we ever did. I know we had an upfront charge of $25 for the transponder. We have it automatically renew with our credit card like a few others do on here.
A few things over the years we have learned are: Dont place it less than 5 inches from the top of your windshield or by any other device attached on your windshield. The other devices and the top of the windshield interfere with the transponders ability to read as it passes the toll booths. Also transport it in the foil bag they send you. It keep is from being sensitive to magnets and other types of electrical devices.

I just purchased one from the website. Anyone remember how long it took to arrive? I can't find the answer on their website. TYIA!

LOL, mine reads even if it is in the glove compartment. I got mine in 2006 and it is the one that beeps when you go through the toll areas, beeps when the battery is low, beeps when my funds are low. Love that darn thing.

Also at CVS (where shopping is not always a pleasure. :) ).

Transponder should arrive in 2 weeks or so. Their mobile site is great for entering rental car info online. In fact there is a check box for rental car usage and you can enter in the "end time" which is when you are returning the car and the link between that plate and your account should automatically be cancelled. I always manually change back to my personal car though.

I wish the new ones beeped, so I would know if it took. I guess that's the price for a battery-less system :thumbsup2

exactly one of the reasons I like the one I have. At the toll booths the light turns green, but on the road way ones I am usually going to fast to notice. :)

Don't they have Publix or CVS in North FL? I think that would have been faster.

You really don't need to do that. With an end date it automatically reverts back to your personal car.

How do you know that it isn't charging the one for the rental car too? I thought the system reads off the license plate and since the rental companies have it set up you're stuck paying them if you go through the high speed toll.

Don't quite understand how it works down there. :confused3

Here's what we do (and how it charges our SunPass and not Alamo if a toll does not read the transpodnder): As soon as we choose a car at rental, we add the rental car's plate to our account as a temporary vehicle. We do this from a smart phone APP using our SunPass number and PIN.

The SunPass website will ask when you want it to end (as in when are you done with the rental car).

If a toll does not read the transponder (and we've had this happen) the SunPass system searches for the plate being assigned to an account (it does not do this in real time, they do a true up later). Since our rental car plate is connected to our account, that's where SunPass will take toll money. If you fail to register the plate on your SunPass account, it would probably default to ther rental car company plate listing (and their policy for charging you for toll payments).
