Hey everyone...i have a bit of a problem
we are leaving for the airport in 16 hours (yes i am counting down lol) and thursday i got a horrible sunburn. I have EXTREMELY light skin that gets burned very easily even with sunblock, and skin cancer is heretitary in my familyand ive never been in florida in june, i'm quite scared that i'll not only get a worse sunburn over the one i already have....and that i'll be in pain beacuse of the burns...can someone tell me how to prevent this?

I would look for a loose-fitting long-sleeve white cotton shirt and light colored gauzy cotton pants or long skirt. I know it sounds crazy to wear long sleeves in the Florida heat, but I think the feeling of the sun on your skin would really hurt even if you are protected with sunscreen. Several people I know who are at risk for skin cancer regularly wear long sleeves and pants when in the sun, even in the Texas heat!

Of course you can try to minimize your time in the sun during the sunniest time of the day and do a lot of touring in the mornings and/or evenings.

Have a great trip!

I have the same problem. I have burned so many times. What I have found is to buy a good sunscreen (the highest protection you can find) and one that is waterproof along with it. I usually buy an empty small squeeze tube (bottle) and fill it w/the sunscreen so it doesn't take up so much room and I apply it very, very often. Also I wear a hat (my head has gotten sunburned too). Try to go early, take a mid-day break when the sun is the hottest and go back in the evenings and enjoy the parks until closing. I usually can't wear anything that will even touch my skin when I burn, so maybe sleeveless while it still sore and sleeves when you can handle it. Just stay away from standing in or walking too much in direct sun. Have a great trip!

Oh, also, we've tried Noxema cold cream for the burns. The smell is awful but it takes the sting out.

First off until you leave, put cold cloths on the sunburn as often as possible to take out any heat. Of if you have one of those packs that can go into the freezer or microwave, put it in the freezer to get it cold and put it on. Use plenty of aloe - make sure it does not have alcohol in it - and cream. You can get a cream that has aloe & vitamin E in it and keep putting both plain aloe & the cream on. You might even consider soaking in a cool bath for awhile to take any heat out of the sunburn. The more heat you get out of it the better off you will be.

Buy 50+ SPF lotion that is either water or sweat proof or both and keep it on you constantly. We used 50 when we went at the end of May and had no problem. DH forgot the back of his neck, but didn't get too bad. After that we made sure he had it on.

But you need to cool your current sunburn down and that will be a big help too.

I am the same as you, fair and from a family that is prone to skin cancer / cancer in general. If you have to, look for small travel size tubes and buy a bunch of them.

Good luck & enjoy your trip.

Look for aloe w/out alcolol but with topical lidocaine added. the lido should help with the pain. I've found it @ rite aide, longs, wallgreens .....:)

We just got back and found Coppertone Sport and Coppertone Spectra (50 plus I think) to work very well. We also used Bullfrog a couple of days... well, my kids and dh that is... nobody got a sunburn.. On the hottest day there, we'd only applied the sunscreen once in the a.m. and forgot to apply later and spent at least 3 hours swimming in direct sunlight... you can't even barely see tan lines on the kids -- and NO sunburns! The umbrella is a good idea too! You could also bring along a light long sleeve button down shirt that you can easily take off when you are out of the sun.

The absolute best selection of light-weight, breathable, durable clothing for wearing out in the sunshine in hot weather comes from fly fishing stores.

When I have a bad sunburn (and you should see my shoulders now...) I just can't have bare sunburned skin exposed even with a 50 spf sunscreen on - it is just too painful. What saves me is a long-sleaved shirt I picked up at a fly fishing shop. It actually feel cooler wearing this long-sleaved shirt than a loose cotton T.

I hope your skin feels better soon. Have a wonderful trip.

Tilley has clothing that protects you from UV rays. THey have shorts, shirts and pants. They are light and gauzy so they wouldn't be hot. They also make great hats and you generally can find them quite easily in Canada (don't know about the states).

You already know about creams and long sleeves but if it is really painful, take some tylenol. It always works for me and my family.

Thanks Everyone SOOOO much! <3:teeth: you have deffinetly helped!!! Im leaving in 11 hours and can't wait!
