Sun Allergies???? !!!

I have the same problem. It mainly affects my arms, face and chest. My legs and shoulders are usually okay. I wear spf 50 or higher and cover up (with lightweight clothes) if I am going to be out in the sun for long periods of time. Hydrocortisone helps relieve the rash, itching and burning. I also don't really tan, I get freckles and white spots (anti-freckles?) from the sun, but very little tan.

the link has some nice looking stuff but really expensive too. I'll ahve to check it out mroe whn I get back from the DR's tomorrow.

Add me to the ranks of sun sufferers. :( And with me, it's also heat and exhertion, which makes it a double-whammy in the sun. :(

Add me to the list of sufferers! It started a few years ago, but I would only have a reaction in intense sun, like in Florida or the Caribbean. Now it even happens after 1/2 an hour of exposure in Michigan, which is a real pain because we have a pool.

I went to the Dr and she said that it is actually a reaction to the UVA rays. The sunscreen I was using only said UVB protection on the label.

Switching sunscreens has seemed to help, but I always miss a spot or it wears off from swimming.

When I get a rash from the sun it can last for up to a week with itching and burning.

It certainly has put a cramp on my "lounging in the pool" lifestyle!

Have you started taking any new medicine? Certain medications can cause sun sensitivities.
When I noticed that this started for me, I had been on antibiotics and I wondered if that had something to do with it. The reaction has remained for several years, now, so I don't know if meds had anything to do with triggering it for me or not. :confused3

Hey, I'm curious to what sunscreens you all use. If you don't mind telling. :)

My Dermatologist said to only use sunscreen that has titanium dioxide or zinc oxide in the active ingredients list.

Thanks, yeah, thankfully there are more of those around these days.

I order a sunscreen online called vanicream for DS. It has both of these ingredients(called physical blockers) with no added checmical sunblocker...it's also free of fragrance and other stuff. It's the only one we can use on his face and neck...others cause an itchy rash that will last a week or two (worse when he's in the sun). Many chemical sunscreens will cause rashes themselves...the higher the spf the more concentrated the products it.
