Suitable New York hotel for young adults

We've just booked flights for elder dd, Georgina and her bf, Nick to go to NYC for his 21st birthday. I'm now looking for hotels. I think they'd feel a bit out of their depth at the kind of places I choose to stay. I'd like to find something which is immaculate in terms of cleanliness and decor, but not intimidating and which has family style dining options rather than upscale. They'll want to do all the usual touristy things, so something in Midtown would probably be ideal.

Deb - We stayed in the Grand Hyatt when we went. It is a 5* hotel but we felt very relaxed there and they had a lovely breakfast buffet. It didn't feel intimidating and was very well situated right next door to Grand Central Station and walking distance to Times Square and the Empire State.

I found the best rate on www.express-res.com for their dates, but worth checking out expedia and their offers which include breakfast.

It isn't the swankiest place in town - as reflected in the room rates - but it is well located, close to Times Square & Restaurant Row and has excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. Added bonus is that there is a mini kitchen (fridge/microwave) in all the rooms.

If you want something higher up the scale, I can highly recommend The Benhamin.

Stayed there in September in a 1 bed suite and thought it was wonderful. A really nice hotel with very friendly and welcoming staff staff (stayed at the Ritz Carlton Central Park South earlier in the year and have to admit felt a bit intimidated by the staff). Their beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept in and there is a choice of 7 or so different pillows you can order from the pillow concierge. The only thing I could fault was the bathrooms which were a bit on the small side.

I think too many tourists make this mistake and realize too late that this hotel is a dump in a bad location. Though it usually offers good deals, I don't know many people who have been happy with it.

I recommend the Times Square Hilton. It is on 42nd Street at Times Square (of course). It is conveniently located in terms of attractions and broadway theaters so after a long day of doing touristy things, it is easy to get to. Also, being at Times Square, you can go out of the hotel at any time of night and there are tons of people around making it truly feel like New York. The Times Square subway station is down the block and you can easily get almost anywhere in the city from there. The hotel has the largest standard size rooms in the city (330 Square Feet) and with 44 floors, chances are, you will have a good view. We had a room that overlooked 42nd street and enjoyed watching all of the people below on the street. The other side of the building, I understand, offers a good view of the Empire State Building which is about 10 blocks away. The artwork in the building is very whimisical offering a feeling of fun and sophistication making it a good place for a couple or a family to stay. It looks like the price now is about $179/night, but with the current exchange rate being in your favor, it is a good deal for a great NYC hotel.
