Suit or Tux on Formal Night?

My husband goes with the suit (as he does not own a tux!)

My husband did the opposite...at the time all he owned was a tux! We also had Remy on formal night so he didn't feel overdressed He finally bought a suit and I can't wait for him to be able to wear it on our next cruise!

I am of the mind that since Disney designates a "formal" night, my hubby and I go with the theme and dress accordingly. ( as other have expressed, personal choice ). To eliminate having more in the luggage, DH rents a tux but packs his formal footwear. The tux is waiting in your cabin on embarkation day all nice and pressed along with shirt, cummerbund or vest (your choice) and its is a nice quality material. The cost, which I can't recall exactly, was quite reasonable and it is yours to wear for the remainder of the cruise should you want to go all out for a special occasion dinner at Remy. There's just something about a man in a tux that makes me swoon so I enjoy seeing my DH all gussied up for the evening.

Interesting. So, how many women wear formal gowns?

I buy them just for dressing up on cruises! We don't go out much at home...at least not to places where I would dress up, so going on the cruises gives me an excuse to buy new clothes! LOL

I bought a few matching tie and vest sets on Amazon for about $20 each and wear one of those with my black suit on formal night. I usually bring all 4 so I can coordinate with my wife. It's a much cheaper alternative than renting a tux.

We actually dress up for dinner every night on our cruises which is why my wife brought 7 pairs of shoes and 4 handbags on our last cruise which was only 4 nights! I don't have the guts to ask her how many she brings on our 7 night cruises. But I will say, she always looks fantastic

Imagine what it will be for the 14-night Panama Canal cruise.

You don't need to spend money renting a tux unless you really want to. The vast majority of men either wear suits/sportcoats, or just ignore formal night altogether.

I just bought DH a decent (though not designer by any means) looking tux off amazon for $59.99. (Closer to $100 by the time I added shirt/vest/tie). Only because I got DS who is 8 a tux for $36 (same price as a suit on amazon). I had gotten myself a deal on a nice evening gown at Macy's, and figure that if I could get them each a tux for a good price, even if they only wear it once or twice, why not.

On our 7 day in Jan, I saw 3 or 4 men in tuxes. My husband owns one, but he won't bring it on the cruise because he hates dressing in a way that makes him stand out. He wears a suit and that's what the majority of men wore on our 7 day.

Formal is interpenetrated differently in many cases. A button down with slacks would be formal enough to me, but others may see that as dressing down. Just do YOU and you can't go wrong! P.S. My husband doesn't own a suit/tux, so I'm sure he will where his normal church attire.

I've sworn that when I finally fit in my 8-yard again without extension straps I will be purchasing the requisite Prince Charlie so that I can ditch the tux for more proper attire.

If you are travelling with other people, I think it's nicer to coordinate with them than to worry about other cruisers. You'll be in photos with your cruising party, so if one person really wants to wear a gown or tux, it is nice to dress to the same level.

You will see other cruisers wear everything from formal wear to shorts and a t-shirt. But the photos and memories of your party are yours to keep, so make them whatever you want.

DW prefers that I wear my tux as the kilt attracts too much attention, so we have an agreement that I can wear it on cruises outside the Caribbean. Canada in October!!!

I've reached the point in life where I reserve ties for weddings and funerals, so I'll just wear a jacket with an open collar dress shirt or polo shirt.

DH will wear a dress shirt and a tie that matched DD and I. That's pushing it for him so I consider myself lucky.

If you own a tux, bring it along, but I would not add that expense if you have a suit that you feel comfortable wearing. We usually take advantage of the photo opportunity as our family photo, so my hubby wears his nicest suit/tie and my daughter (12) and I wear the fanciest dresses on that night. Enjoy the heck out of your cruise, you will love it!

The answer is what you're comfortable with. Personally, I try to minimize the amount of clothes I bring along, since stateroom space is somewhat limited. I just went with a dress shirt and tie, no jacket and was solidly in at least the middle of "dressiness" for formal night. If you really want to go ahead, but don't feel a need to bring the suit or rent a tux.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm going with a navy blue suit. I'll wear it for formal and informal (both with a tie) and at Palo (without a tie). I can mix the shirts and ties up to make it look a little different. Other than that it's shorts, polo's, t-shirts and swimming suits.

I have to admit I never dress up on formal nights, and the reason being that formal clothes just take up to much valueable suitcase space. between the shoes and everything. I'd rather have the space in my bag vs having to check (and pay) for another bag on a flight.
