Members can go on waitlists for sold out DVC properties. When DVC exercises their ROFR those points are made available to people on the waitlist for that resort. Disney charges the going rate for them, usually much more than they paid for them in the ROFR purchase.

The points they get back via foreclosure or exercise of right of first refusal are put back into the mix of points to be sold as add-ones or to new purchasers at Disney's designated (high) price for the particular resort at the time. While they are waiting to be sold, Disney can, if it chooses, use them to do rentals of DVC rooms. In reselling the points, Disney does not have to keep a contract intact, e.g., if it buys through ROFR a 200 point contract, it can then sell those points at any increment such as 25 points at a time. The points do retain their original use year.

The only reason I ask is that one day we won't be able to cross the atlantic (health issues) and so will use our points for destinations in Europe. While we can make the journey, we do want to add on more points but as DVD is currently only selling them in prestige resorts, they are out of our price range. We bout at around £100-£110 at SRS and BLT. If they were selling SRS or OKW at a reasonable price we may take them up on it.

Any points purchased direct from DVC have full usage benefits. It doesn't matter if it's a new resort or a sold out resort and the points were taken by ROFR. What matters are the points are purchased direct.

Whether the direct prices are "reasonable" for the older resorts, particularly those with 27 years of RTU remaining, is in the eye of the beholder. See the sticky information thread to judge that current pricing for yourself.

Paying $130pp for those older resorts expressly with the future intent of routinely exchanging into RCI or any other outside-of-DVC option is going to be a poor financial decision, versus other timeshare systems that you could purchase to obtain that same access. You should really seriously look at the numbers on this before proceeding.

Not that you can't do it, simply that you likely will end up spending more money via the extra DVC timeshare purchase than by instead staying on cash, with your proposed use plan. To me, if the timeshare isn't going to save money, there is zero logic to buying it.

If I were in your circumstance, I would rent or transfer in extra points to cover my WDW trips while still making those voyages, and decide later what (AND IF) to buy to chiefly cover European travel.

The health issues are probably (hopefully) at least 8 -10 years off but they will happen and transatlantic flights will be a no no. In the meantime we love DVC and WDW, stay for at least 3 weeks a year but want to be able to upgrade to 1 beds or take relatives with us. Other timeshares just aren't the same. Some times it's about quality of experience rather than $$.

In the future we know that our vacation style will change dramatically and we will be going places for long weekends far closer to home. The breaks that DVC offer in europe (where good hotel prices are really really expensive) are actually quite competitive when using DVC points. One we looked at was £250 per night, so $375- $395 (dependant on the £-$ rate) and the points we needed was 35-45 per night. That's not a bad exchange. Plus, any points we can't use we can rent out or give away to relatives.
