I think this may be a cultural thing. I've never heard of putting butter on a sandwich except for a grilled cheese sandwich.

Me either. And with grilled cheese the butter goes on the outside. I've never seen or knew anyone to butter a sandwich. Ive seen people use mayo or mustard, avocado or hummus but never butter.

Growing up my mother would butter any sandwich no matter what other spread was also going on. Maybe that's why I never like PB&J as a kid (I always thought it was the stick to the roof of your mouth feel, but maybe it was the butter-PB combo)

Also both my grandmothers buttered the bread before making a sand.
Must be old school from before the store-bought sliced bread.

Interesting thread. I always thought my Mom and g'moms were the ones off their rockers, I guess it's more widespread.

No one puts butter on sandwiches here. Like others on this thread, the only place I've ever heard of butter being put on a sandwich is when making a grilled sandwich.

I noticed Wendy's hamburgers changed their burgers and started buttering the buns. I think it tastes gross.

I have heard of people putting butter on sandwiches and always thought it was odd and kind of gross.

It would never occur to me to use butter on a PB&J. Unless you like it for the flavor, why would you?

ETA: The only sandwich I put butter on is a grilled cheese and I put it on the outside of the bread--the part that is facing the hot pan.

Same here. The only bread I butter is grilled cheese and toast.

The cholesterol and fat numbers make me shudder when I think of butter and peanut butter together.

BUT...if you like the taste, that is all that counts. And if you don't eat butter and peanut butter everyday, then the cholesterol/fat doesn't really matter that much. Sometimes it is good to endulge in something you love.

I voted other. We are not huge pb&j eaters. When we do make them we usually do not use butter though I have made a couple in the past with butter.

I have been putting butter on my PB&J sandwiches all my life. Don't know how it got started, but it does make them creamier.

Other sandwiches get butter, mayonaise, or nothing. I have never liked mustard.

Oh and when she makes any kind of sandwich with mustard or mayo, she does not butter those either, but uses the mustard / mayo as a spread on the spread to replace the butter.

She said it saves calories and money. Am I the only one out of the loop?:rotfl:

I never butter if I am using mayo or mustard. Has nothing to with cost, I just can't see putting two condiments on a piece of bread.

It gives me the heebie jeebies to think of butter and mayo together, but that is my taste.

If I go to a restaurant and order a sandwich that typically comes with mayo or mustard, there is never also butter on it. So, I would say that using each condiment as its own spread is the norm, not pairing butter with other condiments.

However, if it tastes good to you, go for it. Nobody's palate is the same, so you should not do what people on a message board do. Unless your doctor has told you to cut down on fat, you should just please your own palate.

Even the Reduced Fat PB is not very healthy, so PB sandwiches are rare.

Adding more fat...no. No way.

The only time I ever heard of buttering a sandwich was from a friend's mom. She always buttered the bread when making a tuna salad sandwich to put in her DD's lunch. Why? Because the bread would soak up the moisture from the tuna salad and get soggy if she didn't butter the bread first.

But I don't ever butter the bread for sandwiches (unless I butter the outside and make toasted cheese).

Butter a sandwich?. Omg why?.. I have never in my life heard of such a thing!

I've never heard of anyone buttering a pb&j before. Jelly only, yes. And Mom used to butter radish sandwiches. I don't use butter on cold sandwiches. I'm actually kind of grossed out by unmelted butter/margarine.

The most classic sandwich here is Jambon beurre - Ham (and) butter so yes ;)

PB is a once in a blue moon treat as it's hard to find and very expensive but I'd never be putting butter with it

Somehow, I'm thinking the butter you use there is a wee bit better than what's being discussed here. I've had "european" butter. It's delicious, usually unsalted, and very delicious.
