Stupid Question of the Day: Do you put butter on peanut butter & jelly sandwiches?

Wow! At first I thought this thread was a joke because it makes no sense to put butter on a pb&j sandwich. I guess you learn something new every day! Even butter on regular sandwiches surprised me! I guess I don't even see butter as being a condiment and no one I know uses butter on sandwiches. I find it very odd!

And to the person who asked, yes American butter IS inferior tasting to European butter! I don't think ours is as "pure." Plus, many Americans use margarine instead of butter which is even worse in a taste comparison.

No butter on any sandwich except grilled ones. My brother makes grilled cheese and puts butter on both sides of the bread, but he's the only one in the family who does it.

My mother and grandmother put butter on most sandwiches...not pbj though. DH will put butter and pnb on a toasted english muffin. I could never understand that. I dont put butter on sandwiches. BUT when I was a kid I used to make butter and carrot sandwiches! Can we say Ewwwww?

No butter here except on grilled cheese. This was the first I've heard of putting butter on PB&J or along w/ mayo, etc. I learn something new everyday.

I love butter, but I don't butter most of my sandwiches except for cheese. I will use butter if there is no other acceptable condiment around. I'm not a fan of mayo or mustard so i won't use those, but I like others.

I asked my DH about buttering a PB&J sandwich and I thought he was going to fall down laughing He wants know if you butter both sides of the bread before doing the PB

Butter in peanut butter and Jelly sandwich is really for the jelly side. Butter is suppose to keep the bread dry. The Jelly if last too long on the sandwich will soak the bread. You if you notice the uncrustable PB&J, you will notice the peanut butter surrounding the Jelly, not half and half... This also applies to other sandwiches...

how i know this? I volunteer at Meals on Wheels when i was a kid and i asked them why they did this!

I just spread pb on both sides of the bread and jelly in the middle.

The Peanut BUTTER does just fine at protecting the bread from sogginess (which I do recall being a problem in my kindergarten lunches). Once mom started putting the peanut butter on both halves of bread and the jelly in the middle, the problem was solved without the need for ruining the sandwich with butter.

As it stands now, I make a sandwich and then eat it, so there isn't a chance for the bread to get soggy.

Ya know there is a Pin on Pinterest showing the proper way to do it with the peanut butter on both sides. I thought it was hysterical. I'm likely alone but I like my PB&J done half and half and the jelly side just a little soggy. Its an art in how you apply the jelly to get it that way,so it doesn't completely undo the bread but i do it all the time now. I like the sweetness of it that way.

That is exactly how we make them- my daughter and I work on the peanut butter and jelly crew at a local food pantry and make thousands of sandwichs like that!

I just can't imagine adding butter on top of the fat already in peanut butter-why add the extra fat and calories needlessly???

It would never occur to me to use butter on a PB&J. Unless you like it for the flavor, why would you?

ETA: The only sandwich I put butter on is a grilled cheese and I put it on the outside of the bread--the part that is facing the hot pan.

First time I've heard of butter on a PBJ. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

But then I looked at location and the OP is in Canada, so I'm thinking culture differences.

I never heard of putting butter on every sandwich before. I can't think of a single sandwich where I put butter on bread, except as mentioned before Grilled Cheese on the outside before grilling it. Then again, I don't like Mayo or Mustard either, so none of my sandwiches have any type of spread.

No butter on any sandwiches, unless they are to be grilled and then it is on the outside.
Peanut butter doesn't need anything else.
Most other sandwiches, I use mayo..............no butter needed.

The only sandwich I butter is PB&J. DH butters every sandwich, which I find gross. Ham and butter? Yuck.

Now see, a ham sandwich is the only one that I do put butter on. I don't like mayo or mustard on ham. But to have nothing on the sandwich, is way to dry.

Growing up, Mom always buttered pb&j sandwiches. All sandwiches had butter on them . But the whole family ( Dad's side also) did the same thing. Now I don't butter the pb&j if it's going to be eaten right away. But if I'm packing for DD's brown bag - like for a field trip - then I butter it so that the pb&j doesn't seep into the bread in the hours before it is eaten.
