Somehow, I'm thinking the butter you use there is a wee bit better than what's being discussed here. I've had "european" butter. It's delicious, usually unsalted, and very delicious.

We usually make our own for the holidays :)

OMG, butter on any sandwich.... EWWWWWW!!!!!!
That is just so gross.....

Except, of course, if it is one type of sandwich where the bread is specifically supposed to be buttered and toasted or grilled.

Thinking about this I've often heard Américains here raving about our butter compared to what they get back home.

Is yours really that bad ?

My favourite butter is salted with crystals of sea salt in it :goodvibes
It goes great with savoury things and makes chocolate chip biscuits taste even more chocolaty

"Other" here.

For my PB&J sandwiches that's what it is peanut butter, and jelly. And that's how I made my kids sandwiches.

DH, on the other hand, eats peanut butter & butter sandwiches.

My grandmother always put butter on all sandwiches she made :confused3.

:cutie:

I only butter the outside of grilled cheese. Honestly, I have never heard of putting butter on any sandwich, and I've never had a buttered sandwich served to me at any restaurant. Sounds like buttering your fried chicken - overkill.

Did anyone else get up to have a slice of buttered bread? No? Just me I guess!

I don't butter bread when something else is going on it. Only when I specifically want butter. I remember the butter and bologna sandwiches at Grandma's. Yum. I liked so many things as a kid that I wouldn't eat now.

Never, ever heard of putting butter on sandwhiches (especially PB&J). I have used butter on the outside of a grilled cheese to grill it
(but I don't even use butter for that anymore...I use mayo and it tastes great and so easy to spread!)

I do put butter on toast with jelly/jam on top and I absolutely love a toasted corn muffin with butter and jelly!

Never has it ocurred to me that some might butter a pbj sandwich. :confused3

My dad would put butter and peanut butter on toast and I'll do that on occassion now.

I think I remember my family in the midwest putting butter on lunchmeat sandwiches and that was odd. But I'll sometimes now put butter on a ham sandwich.

Most of the time butter is for the outside of a grilled cheese and mayo and mustard are for lunchmeats.

My dad was from the midwest and my mom from the deep south. I grew up in the deep south.

I guess it is a regional/cultural thing.

I have never thought of buttering a PB&J sandwich. But I do put butter and peanut butter on toast sometimes:)

The only time I ever heard of buttering a sandwich was from a friend's mom. She always buttered the bread when making a tuna salad sandwich to put in her DD's lunch. Why? Because the bread would soak up the moisture from the tuna salad and get soggy if she didn't butter the bread first.

But I don't ever butter the bread for sandwiches (unless I butter the outside and make toasted cheese).

Now that makes sense. I've never hear of buttering a sandwich before. But I always pack my tuna and bread separate and make the sandwich when it's time to eat it. If buttering the bread keeps the bread from getting gummy, I totally understand why people would do it.

But I don't think I'd butter a peanut butter and jelly.

Oh and when she makes any kind of sandwich with mustard or mayo, she does not butter those either, but uses the mustard / mayo as a spread on the spread to replace the butter.

She said it saves calories and money. Am I the only one out of the loop?:rotfl:

Never heard of buttering any sandwhich unless its a grilled cheese. Then I only put butter on outside to grill it. Must be Canadian thing. No reason that I see to add butter when using mayo, mustard, PB, or any other condiment.

No, but....

Growing up I hated grilled cheese, so my Mom would make me Grilled PB&J.

It is sooooooo good, and never have found someone to try it that didn't love it! I do butter the outside of the bread to grill it.

On a side/cultural note, I had a friend from England who would dip her french fries in Mayo and Ketchup. Sadly got me hooked.

Yep, butter on my sandwiches; even PB&J. Also use butter & mustard on a sandwich (say ham & cheese or bologna & cheese).

I rarely, if ever, use mayo on a sandwich.

Butter? On Peanut BUTTER and jelly? Why?

Butter in peanut butter and Jelly sandwich is really for the jelly side. Butter is suppose to keep the bread dry. The Jelly if last too long on the sandwich will soak the bread. You if you notice the uncrustable PB&J, you will notice the peanut butter surrounding the Jelly, not half and half... This also applies to other sandwiches...

how i know this? I volunteer at Meals on Wheels when i was a kid and i asked them why they did this!

I just spread pb on both sides of the bread and jelly in the middle.

Me too!

If the pb&j has to wait awhile before being eaten; thinly spread pb on both slices of bread, then a layer of jelly on one and close it up. No more jelly/sugar crusties on the bread.

Wish there was an " Ewwwww grosssss" option :lmao:

My MIL puts butter on ALL of her sandwiches but I never use it. Just find it takes away from the flavour of everything else. To each their own!

I do like butter and peanut butter sandwiches, or butter and jelly sandwiches (and I grew up eating butter and Buddig ham sandwiches) but I don't put butter on PB&J and actually, not on any other sandwiches, either. I eat mayo and mustard on all my sandwiches...would not even think of adding butter to that! Too rich then, I think??
