Stupid Pet Peeve

Merriam-Webster defines invite as both a verb and noun. And it is not a recent thing, going back to the 1700s.

So, people sending invites are correct.

From Merriam-Webster:

Is invite really a noun?
Yes. Some people feel strongly that the role of invite should be restricted to that of verb, but the English language changes and grows according to its own peculiar whims, and not those of people who write angry letters to dictionaries. The process whereby a word changes its part of speech is called functional shift, and there are tens of thousands of words which have done this. Some of them just bother people more than others, and invite (along with gift and friend, which have changed in the opposite direction) is one that attracts considerable opprobrium.

Merriam-Webster's "functional shift" is my "too lazy to bother or care to learn to use the language properly." It annoys me to see how many people just don't CARE about knowing things anymore. "Friend" isn't as bad, as we have a new, actual action known as "friending" as a result of social media, but things like using "invite" for "invitation" is, to me, just laziness. You can put "went missing" and "judgy" in that same category; people are just too lazy or uncaring to learn to use the language properly. (NO, I am not the Ultimate Judge of the Universe; I'm simply telling you my pet peeve and WHY it bothers me!)

When I go to do a big grocery buy and someone comes up with couple items and stands behind me huffing and inpatient.
If you are only buying couple things use the express lane! Don't get in line behind someone buying food for a family of 4.
Often it's young people with junk food.

My new pet peeve is that the grocery store I frequent has change all the "express" lanes to 20 items or less. And did away with all of the full self check out lanes. I have no idea why they decided 20 items was the magic number, but those lanes sure are not "express" at all!

They are trying to make you feel guilty so you will let them ahead of you. Stinks for them though because being all huffy and obvious about it is the best way to slow me down and NOT be nice to let them go ahead. They can deal.

I don't know why 20 items was chosen but it's been around for a long time. I think the other common one is 12 items or less?

I almost excusively use the self-checkout when I can. I was disappointed when our local Costcos removed the self-checkouts. We love going there but haven't gotten to the point of coming out with a full cart often enough so it was nice to do it ourselves and be in and out. To Costco's credit they try to be as quick as possible at the checkout counter. Walmart on the otherhand the cashiers in my experience are not usually quick.

Would it be less annoying if they were buying vegetables?

That is it, the express lanes used to be 12 or less. Plus there was a bunch of self check out lanes. They raised the express limit and took out all of the any size order self check out lanes. Now there are no short lines at all to hop in and get out quick.

LOL no.

I think because they are young (think 16ish) and are picking up pop and chips (I often grocery shop on Friday nights...) they see only one person in line vs the 4-5 in express lane and think it will be quicker.
But if I'm buying $250 worth of groceries and using coupons it takes a while even being the only person in line.

I don't think they expect me to let them ahead as often the cashier is already scanning my groceries. They just think "ohh only one person in line. It's the shortest".

My peeve for the day is raggedy flags flying. It's been a rough, snowy, windy winter here and while I was out today I noticed 3 flags whipping away with the ends tearing/torn off. It's unattractive and I'd like to see more pride taken in our flag.

When my FIL SAYS “ let’s take a picture. BLOOD RELATIVES ONLY!”

My FIL is a wonderful person who likes me. But this really is a pet peeve of mine. In my family, we have lots of adopted relatives. So it’s offensive to me when he says it. Why can’t he say “ how about a picture of the smith cousins” etc.
Aww yeah I wouldn't like that description either. I'm sure he thinks it's just an easy description but family isn't comprised of just blood relations either so but ouch I can see where that hurts.

That's awful.

I'm pretty drama adverse, but I couldn't let that one go.

Any suggestions of what to say? I love him dearly and he’s a wonderful guy. He loves me too. It’s just this one thing he says that upsets me so. There aren’t any adopted people in his family so he thinks nothing of it. I get that he only wants his own kids in the picture. But in my family, we have numerous adopted kids. So it’s just really offensive to me. I guess that’s why it’s my pet peeve.

You're right. That is offensive. I would let him know that it's completely unacceptable to demand that and explain to him why. You can do it without yelling or getting mad. If he is a wonderful guy, he will understand the error of his ways.

New silly pet peeve even though it doesn't affect me one bit...those who line up behind cars at the Costco pumps even when there are pumps open. Costco is a one-way design so their pumps have extenders on them for gas on the other side of the vehicle.

Today I went to Costco to fill up. I don't remember how many lanes there are but there are 2 pumps in each lane. The center lane with 2 pumps open....sat completely empty while the two other lanes on either side had 3 cars lined up behind the 2 cars already on the pump. I just pulled on through to the empty one and use the extender. I can understand if it's just that you don't know there is an extender but it isn't that they hide that have one either.

Either way I was done, back in my car and leaving before any of the other cars had moved. I suppose if you want to sit there go for it but I got places to be and things to see :)

At least that's better than the people who don't pat attention to the fact that it's one way..

My family actively will say "the whole family" when anyone should suggest the "blood family" thing. It's pretty charming. My mom has been a part of my family for 46 years. How much more "family" could she be?

We just got a Costco and I filled up there for the first time the other day. Like you say, the guy I followed in stopped and waited behind a car at the first pump. The end pump was unoccupied. I just drove right up to it. I've never seen such a thing before.

Was it that you hadn't see someone wait when there's an empty pump or that you hadn't seen the pump extender?
