Stupid newbie question

Okay, so I've figured out that when someone posts "subbing" that they are subscribing to the thread, but what does it mean when someone posts "bump"? I thought I read that it meant the thread was being moved but where would it go to and why do people keep posting on the old thread?

As you'll notice from my post count I'm a newbie too, but I've been lurking awhile and from what I've figured, people 'bump' up a thread that has become buried by the many other threads so it will appear at the top of the thread list again. (Don't know about you, but I generally limit myself to the newest threads as there are just too many to keep track of otherwise.) By "bumping" up a thread, it gets noticed by more people and they can get more information or suggestions. That's my take on it. If a thread has been moved, I believe it will actually say "moved" and generally will tell you where it has been moved to. Hopefully, If I'm wrong, someone else will have better information for you.

People bump a thread when it falls off the first page and they did not get any response to their question.

It is frowned upon to bump your posts, but some folks do it anyway.

Also you don't have to actually reply to a post to subscribe. People post "subbing to this" or such.

They can simple just click the thread tools on the top right bar and subscribe via that without posting. Just makes the post easier to read and more importantly, load faster :)

No ASKED question is stupid!

People 'bump' the thread to put the thread at the top of the list. I had no idea this was frowned upon though! I've seen the moderators bump threads all the time and I never thought it was bad to do. Of course, rather than putting 'bump' you could just write something else and it would still bump it to the top of the list.

I think I got it now. Thanks to all who answered.

I'll refrain from doing so, if it's not a popular move.
