stupid mistakes made to Disneyland

I'm going to disagree with most of what's posted... DL has to change things, even getting rid of beloved rides and attractions, to keep pace with the need to encourage more tourists to visit.
Those of us who are fanatics are already hooked,we will go again just becuase we love the Disney magic.
The locals are already hooked, but since they have the opportunity to go more often than the average tourist.. they get bored, they don't go as often to spend the money (unless of course they become a disney fanatic).

Disney offers new attractions, new parades, new fireworks to lure the locals (and the average tourist) to spend their dollars in the parks.

How many of you decided to go to Disneyland simply because the 50th celebration was happening?
How many of you are eagerly waiting for a summer trip to see how Nemo turned out?

Yes, they do screw up sometimes... DCA has been labeled a failure as a single park, TL needs some work (I love the new color scheme, it made a difference on how the area looks. Nemo should help breathe new life in the area too. Think of it as a work in progress.). I think some of the fault lies in lack of funding under previous management. With the dollars from the 50th fresh in the hands of managemnt.. now is the beginning of a new era of DL... think of all the changes that are happening just this summer!

Be patient, enjoy Disneyland for what it is.. a beautiful magical place to bring families, a fun spot for the locals to hang out, a place where all ages can enjoy the day together!

IMO this could not have been said better. Well done!

DL just makes me happy. Period. I walk in there and I just feel ALIVE! I dont analyze what is wrong or what they SHOULD have done. Life is too short to stress about those things. Plus nothing is perfect! DL to me is still the most amazing, fun, magical, memorable and exciting place on earth!

I disagree with keeping your head in the sand -- one should always work on negatives and turn to positive. Without looking at mistakes or things to update/change nothing will be magical about breaking down rides, old looking/out of date areas in the park.

I agree with that, to a point. I think the subs needed a serious make over, and they did exactly that. Same with TSI, I think the pirate theme is a wonderful idea for it. But I think they need to look at what isn't working in the parks and to change THOSE attractions. Not the beloved ones that are packing in the crowds still. For example with the Country Bears. I never went to a show and had it be empty. It always packed in the crowds. Now I can't tell you how many times I've gotten on Pooh, in the dead middle of busy July with not much of a line at all. Same with Snow White and Innovations too. Those are things that I don't believe would really be missed by most, and would welcome a change. But when you start to take away what "Disneyland" IS to people, you don't give them a reason to return. I can go to any amuesment park in this country and see big roller coasters ect.. Disneyland is the only place I can see things like POTC, all the Fantasyland rides ect.. There are things that if they decided were "old" and "needed change" would take away what Disneyland is to me.

So yes, change is good in things that are outdated, AND not adored by a lot of people. But to change things are crowd pleasers, no matter how old they are, doesn't make much sense to me.

I dont recall saying I have my head in the sand. Plus I made it clear that it was IMO "In my opinion". Of course yours may differ. That's why they are opniions!

Let me be more clear. I absolutely LOVE DL. I do not go on vacation to criticize everything in the park, I go to enjoy it. Do I miss some of the things they take out? SURE I do but I dont dwell on it. I enjoy the things I like and skip those that I dont. I dont let chipped paint ruin my day there is all I was saying! I know things need work but like I said I focus on what is positive. I guess I'm just a cup is half full kind of person.

We all enjoy DL in different ways and like different things. Otherwise everyone would be in line with me on BTMRR all the time!!!

YAY! I AGREE!!!!!! I love DL - considering this is a dl fanatics site that shouldn't come as a surprise. I'm sure there are some things in DL and DCA that were oopsies but oh well. Life goes on, let the experts deal with that, I just want to go to DL to feel like a kid again. And I think DL does so many amazing things that truely outweigh their oopsies. I'm just thrilled that we live in a time where we can all come together to a place like DL and share special memories with our loved ones. Three cheers for Disneyland!

IMO: If you visit DL with a negative attitude it defeats the whole purpose of visiting the "happiest place on earth." Why do people go on vacation? They want to relax, have a good time, spend time with their family, share a memorable experience, etc. Many people visit DL for the same reason: to HAVE A GOOD TIME. If you only notice the "flaws" or negative things, not only does it put you in a bad mood but it will also most likely ruin your trip. You miss out on all the fun because your focusing on all the bad. Will DL always have changes? Yes, most likely it will, but it's not going to affect my love for the park.

I agree with that completely!!! I love DL and anytime I go there or anywhere on vacation I refuse to look at the negatives - and sit back and enjoy the trip!!! I actually really enjoy that fact that everytime we go back (and that is frequently) there is some sort of change and something new to look forward to!!!

Ok, we've practically lived at WDW and are planning our ds6's first trip to DL. We've explained that this is where Walt actually walked around while it was open. He's seen older films and we've excited him about seeing the original Tiki Room. I haven't seen the new Tarzan tree instead of the Swiss Family Robinson (kids go who?) and am really looking forward to seeing Nemo instead of WDW's dopey play area. I'm surprised they just didn't put in a gift shop.

How about some improvements on GETTING to WDW. SNA is the closest airports and the most expensive and hardest to fly into. They need to have Disney hotels in different prices ranges (stop giving all the execs these great packages and buy up a whole mess of hotels and take over). They could use DME and keep us all in their hotels and parks.

EPCOT was a big bore to me when I first went when it opened (teenager). Now it's a great park.

We are very excited to visit DL.

Funny how great and crowded these rides became after they were taken out.

Let us examine what has happened at WDW. And keep in mind things get stale more quickly over at DLR than they do at WDW.

TTA at WDW is very similar to the people mover. On a day where Space Mountain was running 80 minute waits in Standby, TTA was walk on and we had a whole train to ourselves. Some of them were empty. Others had a couple groups in them. Not a single one was even half full. Is it a stretch to say that the People mover at DLR would be about as popular had it remained? I think not.
Country Bears sits at WDW. When Splash runs at 100 and Big thunder about 60, the bears were about half full. Is it a stretch to say the country bears at DLR would have met the same fate? I think not.

I'm sure when Cop is taken out there will be a ton of posts about how crowded it was. But again that same time that Space Mountain was running 80, our section on COP had about 10 people on it and the adjacent sections had about the same.

What was lacking in the case of the Country Bears and the people mover coming out was not the decision itself. The fate of those rides at WDW indicates those decisions were good ones. What was lacking was the execution as to what went in in their place. Had they banked the corners and made the rocket rods less dorky looking and hold more people, that ride could have been great. Had Pooh been better, it would be more than a worthy replacement for the country bears.

I agree with the previous posters that have talked about loving Disney for simply being Disney. I have visited WDW and will continue to go back for the pure joy and magic of it all. I am visiting DL for the first time and I know I will love it as well. The only mistake that I can think of that Disney made is letting Universal Studios get the Harry Potter attraction contract . I am soooo disappointed that the Disney Parks will never have a Daigon Alley, a Wizard Sweet Shop, a flying car ride, or butterbeer . Perhaps the muggles have something to do with this. Now I will have to visit Universal in Florida and take precious time away from my WDW vacation .

2. Taking out the Country Bears
3. Taking out the People Mover
4. Moving the Astro Orbiter.
5. (An oldie but a goodie) Doing away with the Ticket books.

We visited Disneyland back in 2003. Before that, I hadn't been since 1993. I was shocked by the changes.

Gosh, I love DLR too, and certainly have a very positive approach to the parks .....but sorry....I think it was a huge mistake to take out Peoplemover but an completely inexplicable one to move the rockets! So I stand by my responses

I don't think missing attractions or viewing it as a mistake to remove them, makes people "negative" or not enjoying their vacations. I doubt anyone sits around dwelling on it. Those rides were a big part of my childhood memories, so yeah naturally I'm going to wish they were still there. So I could share them with my own child. That doesn't mean I don't absolutely LOVE DL, or that I walk around on vacation saying "Gee this is so not fun with the Country Bears!" After all everyone is here because they LOVE DL so much right?

I think it's perfectly okay to miss rides, not like an improvement or feel something was a mistake. You can do that without taking away from the rest of what you love about DL!

I do see your point - I guess for me it seems that there have been a few threads that have taken negative turns - so I know I was trying to go for a more lighter, fluffier, happy approach

That's true, I know some threads have. I guess instead of just saying "what a mistake" I was looking at this thread of kind of remembering what I miss. But I can see where it could be viewed as negative for sure!

See that is a good way to look at it and would have been a great thread but I guess with the opening words like stupid and dumbest it was easy to see this as a negative bashing thread. I opened it up and thought gosh not again. Many have turned ugly lately and I just wanted to throw some good points out there too!
