STUPID ink security tags- or STUPID cashier!

I worked retail, and I think that I forgot to remove one about twice. It usually happened on a big bulky item or when some sales associate thought they'd hide the thing. For the store I worked in there were certain rules about when you put the sensors on. So, it wasn't on everything. I always felt horrible about it. Being a manager, I dealt more with the customers with items that I didn't deal with. I really enjoyed the ones who were understanding to the problem. I was really annoyed with the ones who thought we were stupid. Knowing how often something like that can happen I usually didn't question the customer when they came in. I even did a big no-no a few times. I would take them off for other stores. For those, I would look at the receipt.

I had this happen from my Friday shopping trip. I spent over $400.00 on clothes from 1 store and when I got home and started going over the receipt and prices i noticed a tag on 1 of the items. I took it back on Sunday and they took the tag off. I figured it was a busy day friday and I did have tons of items...if they only missed 1 tag that was pretty good! I do think they are annoying though. Having to remove them from the items is time consuming, especially with an order like mine and then you have the line behind and you can see the eye rolls from the others because the line is moving slow. Cashiers are human, they make mistakes. I'm surprised she missed it though because she was looking things over pretty good and I was also watching to make sure they all came off...so we both missed it.

We don't use these as they don't really deter anything and they just cause an inconvenience to good customers.

I also agree that calling the cashier STUPID isn't all that nice. This is the busiest time of the year (sometimes busy is an understatement) and forgetting things can happen. Everyone makes mistakes, even you, but that doesn't make you stupid...does it?

This has happened to me so many times now that I double check everything as I hand them to the cashier!

I want to know what the purpose is of having these so called security tags on if I can easily walk out with so many of them without someone running after me!

This happened to me with two things I bought at WDW, actually, and didn't realize until I got back home and went to wrap them for Christmas. Luckily one was a throw in a plastic bag and the tag was attached to the bag, so I just cut the bag open. The other was a hat though, so I called Merchandising at WDW, and they shipped me a new hat and had me return the one with the tag to the local Disney Store. (Though once I got there they told me they could have taken the tag off for me, even though Merchandise said otherwise.)

This used to happen all the time when I bought stuff at Lane bryant. The first time, it was a pair of pjs that I bought to wear on vacation at the Outer Banks of NC. I took them out of the bag still folded, packed them, and when I went to wear them found the tag. We were in a vacation home, so we had no tools. No Lane Bryant store nearby. Ever since then, I would watch the cashier carefully.
But about 2 years ago, I bought a dressy jacket at Burlington in Oct. for a wedding in Nov. About a week before the wedding, I was showing my sister and found the tag. I tore my house apart looking for the receipt and had no luck. I had the credit card bill with the Burlington charge, and took that to the store and they still refused to remove it. So I walked out with it, went home, got a screwdriver and removed the darn tag. The store manager's attitude stunk. I felt like he thought I stole the jacket, but as my sister pointed out, I was allowed to walk out with the jacket anyway! I've barely bought anything in the store since.

I can't believe how common this problem is! My mother just told me this weekend that she has a coat she bought months ago which still has the sensor tag on it (she just realized it since she hadn't needed to wear it until now), and she can't find her receipt. She is sooo upset, because she doesn't know how she can get them to remove it if she can't prove that she paid for it. I will let her know that if she charged it that they will have record of it, as some posters have mentioned. However, what if she paid cash for it? That would really tick me off if the store would refuse to remove it.

I think it's really silly that stores won't take the tag off the item...but they still will let you leave with it???? Where does this make sense? If they think you stole it in the first place so they won't take the tag off...what is the idea of letting you leave the store with the merchandise? Is it because they know you can't wear it with the tag on so they just think they are writting it off as a business loss? Any retail managers have an answer for this?

on the subject of security tags, i was going to buy a fleece a while ago and it had one of the ink stain tags on it. and what happened was that i went to throw it to my friend to hold on to and he must of hit it the wrong way or something, and the ink went onto the fleece and stained it. needless to say the manager came over and was acting like a moron, thinking that i did it on purpose. so i told him that it was a standard football play and that my friend was going for a touchdown. (i loved being a smartass in that mall) anyway, he made me pay the 29.99 for the fleece and i never bought anything from there again. i hate those tags.

edit: forgot to add something

Never tried it but I was told that if you freeze the ink tag (with the entire item) you can break the tag and ink cylinders and shake out the frozen ink fragments without getting anything stained.

Prying with a screwdriver can damage the fabric, especially if the screwdriver touches the fabric.

Don't bring the item near let alone back into the store unless you have your receipt.
