Studio vs 1-Bedroom, does the washer/dryer convince you to use the extra points?

I may be alone on this island but there is no chance I would book a 1 bedroom JUST for the washer and dryer. Before spending those extra points, I'd sooner throw the clothes away. Or stuff them in a plastic bag until we get home. Or use the resort laundry. Or wash them in a sink.

That said, we have booked 1BR many, many, many times. But it's more about the full kitchen, more space, extra beds...and the W/D.

+1

Convinces me only if I have extra points (rare) but I truly LOVE having a washer and dryer. We got drenched on our May trip. I mean drenched 2 days. It was wonderful to have that dryer to dry our shoes, even though we had to hear clunk clunk. I know the BWV dryers would have been lined up to the door.
I've never packed this to take on vacation but there were times I wish I did. I've owned 2 of them for about 15 years and it works wonderfully.

The washer dryer and full kitchen together are a winning combination for me, and I often book a one bedroom, even when traveling solo. I love the extra room to strech out and relax...and don't underestimate the jacuzzi tub in the 1 bedrooms at OKW....

While i appreciate the washer and dryer I try to not let it be a deciding factor, especially now that our kids are older. For us it’s not a good use of points. Now if we are looking more at the use of the kitchen then maybe. But often we skip the 1 bedroom and just use guest laundry as it’s free to owners.

I do laundry in our villa daily to the horror of my friends LOL! We are roughing it for one night at Poly in October until we move over to a 1 BR AKV for five more nights. It saves lots of packing (who knows you are wearing the same clean jeans five times?) and you bring home clean clothes. WORTH IT!

I've never stayed in a 1BR with DVC but I've been with friends in a 3BR in the Marriot near DLP and the convenience of kitchen and washer/drier was fantastic, I agree.
However, for 2 people for a short time, is it really worth $342 per night?
The point difference between a studio and a 1BR in February is 19 points. Even at a conservative value of $18pp, it's $342 per night. Might be cheaper to pay for someone to come, collect your clothes and bring them back cleaned and ironed.
I would keep the studio.

It's hard to disagree with this on an intellectual level. However, points don't really equate to $$ like that for me. I pay the dues in a lump sum every year (like an insurance premium or property taxes) and then forget about it. If I have the points, I use them. I like that 1 bedroom, LOL.

For the first 15 years of DVC, I’d agree with you. In the beginning,I was thrilled having a coffee pot and toaster in studio and not walking three miles to coffee at food court.

Then health changed, more space needed scooter, more meals in room, more use of room , etc.

That would be assuming you will get $342 out of the points if you didn't get the one bedroom. Add in the cost to rent them, unless you use a totally free rental site, the additional hassle of adding the income to your tax paperwork, or will definitely be traveling again to Disney yourselves in the near future.

As I've said previously, I usually get a one bedroom just for me, unless a group trip is in the future a year from now where I need to save points by staying in a studio for a two or three bedroom. later in my use year. Mom and I purchased DVC for our personal use, and that of our family and friends. And now, being a gentlemen of a certain age, I definitely appreciate the extra room to relax, and ability to prepare breakfast and snacks, and the ability to pack lighter and wash my clothes in the room.

I also love sitting out on the larger OKW 1 bedroom balconies enjoying my coffee and moderating the boards on my laptop in the mornings, unless I have to be at a park early.

No, the washer and dryer does not convince me to use the extra points for a 1 bedroom, I do a lot of DCL then travel to the resorts after my cruise and use the resort washer and dryers almost every time. I find that to be a very nice amenity even if it's not in the room with me.

I only book 1 bedroom if I have 3 to 4 in my party and we plan on just sitting around the room and catching up with each other, it's more comfortable than a studio even though we would all fit in a studio. Even then I usually grab a studio also so we have plenty of space and privacy. We will all congregate in the 1 bedroom for card games or sitting around visiting but mornings and late evenings we have our separate spaces with private sleeping quarters for everyone.

I have never understood the reason why people justify on the rental price. We always use the dues price. so for our family the 1bdrm is perfect. Yes double the cost of studio, but double the footprint. Bonus full kitchen, laundry and some 2nd bathroom ( 3 girls).
I know it get pushed by some of the rental agents about renting points and using the money for cruises and such. Not everyone is comfortable doing that. That is almost the same as thinking, hey I am on holidays at X, I should airbnb my house and make money so my vaca is not so expensive. Some will, but most wont.

Good question: what is the value of DVC points?
We can give different values to our points. It could be rental value, it could be due costs, it could be dues+part of the purchase price.
Or since it allows to book rooms that are sold by Disney at a very high price, divide discounted rack rate by total number of points. A weekend studio at Riviera is 20 points or $855 cash. So the value of a point could be $42.
Or since those points allow to book vacations with friends and family and make memories that last a lifetime, maybe it's even more than that.
Or maybe for others the points were purchased long time ago and dues are paid automatically so they don't even think about those, so they consider them repaid and just to be enjoyed and have no value.

I am a firm believer that people can do with their money (and points) whatever they want. So my message was not to judge how others would prefer to use their points. But the OP asked for opinions, so I gave mine, which was quite different by all other answers to the thread. So I thought it might give a different point of view.
I have sometimes some leftover points and I rent them. Also in the UK we have a personal allowance for rental of properties abroad and I rarely exceed that, so I don't pay taxes on what I rent for.
So for me it's reasonable to use as value the opportunity cost of not selling them if I decide to upgrade my room so I personally find hard to justify an upgrade to a 1BR just for the W/D.
But if you instead prefer 1BR, absolutely, go for it end enjoy!

Said it before, and I’ll say it again…
Community washers/dryers, even if the work, are somewhat disgusting.
There have been reports of folks washing poop diapers in the machine. I have always done a blank load before washing anything.
The dryer,? Many have reported drying bathing suits and the like, without washing them first.

Hard pass.

Good question indeed. Might start a new thread . Thanks
