my dear niece had a stroke at age 34 she is in hosp now, her speech eye sight and movement came back.. they dont know where the blood clots are coming from. there going to put a scope down her throat to look at her heart? my sis finally got in fromn colorado last night and i took er up to hosp.in downtown detroit , i am about 100 miles from there.she has an 8 year old son.. he is scared as we all are . i dont know what to expect do you??

One relatively young woman I knew had a stroke @ ~ 45. She made a complete recovery but it took about a year. If the niece is recovering speech and eyesight and movement already then I would think it looks very good for her to recover completely.Prayers said for her and her son.

Another relatively young man i know of, had a severe stroke, is alive when it seemed doubtful, but will be probably be disabled for the rest of his life. Hypertension runs in his family.

You can expect them to search long and hard for the source of the clot...they may put an IVC filter in (clot catcher) to prevent blood clots to the lungs/heart....she may be put on anticoagulation therapy...sometimes the pressure of the plane can contribute to throwing an existing clot unfortunately. They will probably also do an extensive cardiac work up to make sure her heart is functioning properly. Just to let you know, it can take years for the brain to learn to work with the pathways it has after a stroke. Don't be surprised if she has some remaining weakness or neurological deficits. It's completely "normal." It's a good sign that she has rebounded so quickly though. Strokes are scary, but try not to think the worst. Oh, and huge :grouphug: to you and your family.

Oh i'm so sorry to hear this. I hope your dn is okay. It sounds like she is doing much better. I'll say prayers for her and your family.

This must be such a difficult time for your family! My grandmother recently had to have unexpected surgery due to some blood clots in her leg. She is in her 80s, but the age didn't make it any less scary for the family.

I found that clear, accurate information helped to diminish the sense of instability and uncertainty for everyone during that time. I expect that this will be especially true for the 8-year-old. Unfortunately, I don't have the medical expertise to offer information, but I definitely encourage you to ask lots of questions of the doctors! If you don't understand something, don't be afraid to ask for clarification or to have them explain it again in different words.

One thing I have realized as a result of the unexpected events occurring in my own life is that although I like to think I'm "in control" of my life, that has never really been the case. So I'm learning to give up "control" (which I never really had anyway) and work more toward "balance" or "equilibrium" instead (which is definitely possible).

When events like this happen, they throw things out of balance. I think personal growth and increased strength come in the process of "rebalancing" our lives in ways that accommodate the new challenges and situations. It sure isn't any fun, though!

My thoughts are with you! I also happen to live in Michigan, so if there is anything I can do for you, let me know!

So sorry to hear about your DN, such a young age for a stroke. Sending prayers at this difficult time for all your family and that she has a speedy and complete recovery.

:grouphug: to you and your family. Many years ago I had a stroke in my 20s. Actually I had 2 a few weeks apart. I would say I have recovered. When I get very tired my right side weakens and when I smile it is just a little lopsided. (you wouldn't even notice it). Not too bad considering when my stroke was done I was almost completely paralyzed on my right side. I worked very hard and had a lot of therapy.

This was in the 80s and times have changed. I won't comment on medical treatments because there has been so much advancement. I just wanted to let you know people can recover. Your niece has done the correct thing and got treatment right away and her youth may aid her in her recovery. Good luck.

Very sorry for you and your family! Often times there's no lasting effect that anyone can tell. My DH had a stroke at age 38 and one would ever suspect...truly the picture of health. Hope that's the case for your DN!

My neice had a stroke at the age of 2 with complete hemiparisis. She made a full and complete recovery and at the age of 13 she has had no occurances. They never did find the cause in spite of being hospitalized at Tufts and having her blood sent all over the country. She is on a baby aspirin per day and couldn't smarter, happier or prettier. ;) Good luck to your neice. We will pray for a full and complete recovery for her also!

My heart goes out to your niece and your family. I know some about the effects from having a stroke. My dad had a stroke about 4 1/2 years ago. He has lived with us for a little over 4 years. Sounds like your niece is doing well if she has got her speech, site and movement back. Hopefully they will find out where the blood clots are coming from. My dad was 74 when he had a massive stroke and does remarkably well now. He never did regain his speech back though. He did regain about 90% of his movement back but he lost his eyesight in the right side of both eyes. He can read but cannot write his name. Simple things are sometimes a chore for him, yet he can show me what direction to go when driving him somewhere. Please keep us informed on her condition. 34 is so young to have to go through this.

update . first thanks for all the prayers.. they have found hole in her heart. we are waitng for her to come out from the scope thing down her throat to her heart,, they did ultra sound on her legs they keep going numb.. they found no clots in her legs..so still just the waiting game her spirits are good ...

I had two strokes at age 35, and had complete paralysis on my left side for about a month. I'm doing much better now, therapy has helped. I think it's wonderful that they've found a cause, since all my tests were negative, even the TEE. They still don't know why this happened, but it's been almost 2 years from the first stroke, so I'm hoping I'm done!!!

Hi, I am assuming your niece has had all her tests today and I hope everything is working in her favor. It sounds like they may have scheduled her for a transesophageal echocardiogram (to look at her heart) so there would be a phrase to google. She's most likely on a heparin IV drip to make sure her blood stays thin until they find out where the clotting is coming from. Does she have any history of sickle cell, maybe? Is she a smoker? Also her blood pressure may have played a role as well.

Did they bring her to Henry Ford or the Detroit Medical Center? Henry Ford is excellent. I'm in the area, north of Detroit, I'm an RN at a small community hospital, but we do have an excellent cardiology department.

Also, as another poster said, if her symptoms have mostly resolved this early, that is a great indicator for her eventual full recovery.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Thx for the update, I have been thinking and praying for your DN and family.
Hope they get to the route of her problems and she has a full recovery.
