This must be such a difficult time for your family! My grandmother recently had to have unexpected surgery due to some blood clots in her leg. She is in her 80s, but the age didn't make it any less scary for the family.
I found that clear, accurate information helped to diminish the sense of instability and uncertainty for everyone during that time. I expect that this will be especially true for the 8-year-old. Unfortunately, I don't have the medical expertise to offer information, but I definitely encourage you to ask lots of questions of the doctors! If you don't understand something, don't be afraid to ask for clarification or to have them explain it again in different words.
One thing I have realized as a result of the unexpected events occurring in my own life is that although I like to think I'm "in control" of my life, that has never really been the case. So I'm learning to give up "control" (which I never really had anyway) and work more toward "balance" or "equilibrium" instead (which is definitely possible).
When events like this happen, they throw things out of balance. I think personal growth and increased strength come in the process of "rebalancing" our lives in ways that accommodate the new challenges and situations. It sure isn't any fun, though!
My thoughts are with you! I also happen to live in Michigan, so if there is anything I can do for you, let me know!
