Stripped Searched at Miami Airport

Oh, well, my underwire bra set off the metal detector once, so I just use regular bras now when I fly. I keep a couple I actually refer to as my "travel bras". You never know........the main thing with security is to realize its an unfortunate necessity in today's world. Just allow plenty of extra time, and don't take it personal if you're pulled aside for any aditional screening. Be polite and cooperative and you might just be surprised at how nice you'll be treated in return! I guess I'm just so used to it it doesn't bother me any more.

The only airport security incident I ever had that irked me was when I was traveling with my cat. I had him in an airline approved cage, but just didn't think of the logistics of getting him through the security. Well, the screener was obviously not a cat lover! She first requested I remove him from the cage and walk through the metal detector with him. Well, since I always set off the detector anyways due to artificial joints, etc., I pointed out that that would not prove anything. I also express concern that if I removed him from the cage he might bolt, he was nerved up. I didn't have a harness or leash on him (remembered to do so after that). Well, she just got impatient and before I realized what she was doing she shoved the cat, cage and all, through the metal detector! Poor kitty was nervous enough as it was, then to be put through that noisy, dark tunnel, he came out the other end shaking like a leaf! Honestly, they could have handled it differently. Perhaps they could have wanded the cage, or let us go to an enclosed room to remove the cat from the cage so if he bolted at least I wouldn't be chasing him all over the airport. Then they could have sent the empty cage through the metal detector, then wanded the cat. There were many more options than what she did. BTW, two years after that incident my kitty got cancer of the jaw and had to be put down. He was old and that type of cancer is common in elderly cats, but I can't help but wonder if all that radiation did something. It certainly didn't do him any good. Oh, well, that was several years ago, but if you're traveling with a pet remember to have him on a leash for such times (I was taking him on board the aircraft and just didn't anticipate having to remove him enroute, should have thought ahead) :cat:

Ducklite,

Glad to hear your bra has traveled over a million miles! Perhaps you don't need as much underwire as I do :rotfl2:

A little OT but relevent. I went to a concert last night where everyone was "wanded" before going through the doors. I actually asked the girl doing the wanding to "try" to set off the detector with my bra "wires" after a brief explanation as to why. I was wearing a VS Ipex bra as an FYI for anyone looking for a supportive wired bra that won't set off teh detectors. The hooks on the back set it off only when she bumped it way up, the wires did not.

Like I said, I've never set the detectors off with my wired bras, and I haven't worn a bra without wires since I was in high school. Even my sports bras have wires.

:sad1: its so bad now that i couldn't even bring a pack of simply spray fabric paint for my grand kids. they flagged my luggage and took it! the kids were so upset, they really wanted to use it. (incase you never used it before- its great just google simplyspray) anyway, try explaining to a kid that they took their present from grannie at the airport!!!!

When airplane/airport security was first increased post 9/11, the metal detectors were set too high and gave many false positives. For instance a friend's DD was pulled aside for extra screening because a very tiny metallic bead in her hairbraid set off the metal detectors. It is my understanding that the metal detectors are now adjusted to allow for small amounts of metal - for instance I do not remove my wedding ring (even though I do take off all other jewelry).
I don't think underwires will set off the metal detectors anymore. I know many women who fly out of Washington Dulles and Reagan National all the time, some of them wear underwires & they do not have to go through extra screening...

Also the different airports vary. I have a nice Tag Heuer heavy watch that only sets off the metal detectors at LaGuardia but not any of the other many airports I fly in or out of. Go figure.

I've never had my underwire bra set off any metal detector anywhere though.

My 83 year-old mother usually *always* gets pulled aside for extra screening when she travels and she absolutely does not fit any possible profile either. I actually think that sometimes the screeners look for opposites to any profile so they can balance out possible discrimination claims.

ot, but did you see the piece on all the "robert johnsons" who get hassled when they fly because there's a robert johnson on the no fly list. they were all gathered together (was it on 60 minutes?) and asked if they have trouble w/security when flying, and they do. and to top it off, the most wanted suspects are NOT on the no fly list because if the list got out, the gov doesn't want them to know they're onto them--so they can fly. sheesh.
