Strip steak or Ribeye steak?

As I looked through the menus, I noticed many restaurants offer both a strip steak and a ribeye? Can anyone explain the difference and recommend which one they like better? Thanks.

A ribeye is a cut that comes from along the "prime rib" of the cow. It is a very flavorful cut due to the marbling of fat thru the piece of meat.

The strip is not as tender or tasty, still a good piece of beef. If you have heard of New York Strip, if I am not mistaken it is sort of the same except a few "choice" strip cuts are saved and called New York. (could be a bit off, but hopefully you get what I mean).

I am a beef eater, will eat just about any cut of steak. But if I had to choose between the 2 it would be the ribeye. It is the tenderest and the most tasty.

If you don't mind cutting your way through some fat, the rib eye is generally more succulent, but the strip, or New York Strip, is an amazingly good steak. The fat is only on the end, very easy to cut around, and is mouthwatering and heavenly....and I hope you are ordering your steaks medium rare. If you need to have them medium well or well done, I don't recommend either. To me it would be a waste of money. Get a steak burger or something else. But when it comes to the choice between a rib eye and a strip, if you haven't been through cutting around a rib eye, I think you'll be better off with the strip. It's a delicious steak.

I love Ribeye..I get it all the time at Texas Roadhouse.:thumbsup2

And I agree about getting it medium rare or rare..I hate when they cook the heck out of steak..I like it so a good vet could have that sucker up and walking around, with some effort.;)

Ribeye can have some gristle fat in some poor cuts, but otherwise is tends to be very tender. It seems to be very "en vogue" currently. I've got three in the fridge right now :)

I'm just the opposite; I prefer the New York. I eat my steaks almost raw and usually the fat running through the Ribeye is a pain to cut through, even on a good piece.

So true--Ribeye means FAT and gristle. The meat (what there is of it) is quite tasty. It is like Prime Rib and almost every time I get Prime Rib,it's 40 to 50% plain old fat.
NY Strip is MUCH better steak.

I always go for the rib eye because it is much more flavorful and tender. DH usually goes for the strip. He does not like any fat on his steak and isn't as fussy about tenderness.

Restaurant Strip steaks are normally thinner than a Ribeye but that isn't an absolute.

I'd pick Ribeye 100% of the time. There are large sections of fat but they are easily cut off. I don't like fat and will dissect a fatty steak but the flavor of the meat on a ribeye is must better than a strip steak. Strip steaks are generally less tender, less juicy and less tasty when compared to a Ribeye.
