Strict Dress Codes: Does your public school have one and thoughts?

Their dress code is more lenient than our is. With ours you have 3 pant colors and only solid colored shirts. I guess those striped polos and brown pants are the cause of all of our delinquents.

What is ironic, is we didn't really have a problem with dress code. Even now when the kids wear their own clothes, most of them are wearing a polo and jeans, but the polo is either striped or has a logo and heaven forbid you wear jeans or cords.

I agree that the whole level the playing field is bunk. Kids know who has money and who doesn't. You can pick out the kids that have money at the bus stop by just what shoes and coats they are wearing and the fit and wear level of their clothes.

I think the real reason for dress codes, at least in our case, is it to hide what is really wrong. We have a horrible graduation rate and our test scores are some of the worst in the state, but we have kids who follow the dress code. We may not be able to raise the rates, but at least we can make them all look the same. When you look at all the schools around us, none of them have a uniform policy, but they all have better graduation rates and test scores. We have a 40% suspension rate which hasn't changed in 3 years, but we are told we haven't given the uniforms enough time to work and make the figures go up. Lets face it, the uniform policy is like putting on a bandaid when you cut off a finger. It may not work, but you can say you did something.

That is really sad. There are all kinds of studies out there that show that kids that dress nicely did better in school-apparently the kids at your school didn't read them (gotta love studies). In our kids' old school they wanted to institute a uniform-some of the parents did that is. I was on the school board at the time and it was really funny to hear them pull out all this dress/performance data because then I pointed out that 100% of our 8th graders passed the state graduation testing requirements (Catholic K-8 school). We asked them to share with us what more the uniform would improve? It really came down to the fact that they were tired of fighting with their kids over what they were wearing in the morning (the kids wanted to we wear jeans and t-shirts like the rest of the school and mommy wanted to dress them up like little dolls).

Our district is through eighth grade. This all seems like common sense to me. I have not heard of a child being "suspended" for a violation or a parent getting bent out of shape about any particular rule.

The District dress code is meant to promote a positive, professional learning environment where the
focus is on instruction. Clothing, hairstyles, and accessories should not be disruptive, immodest or
compromise student learning. Students are expected to come to school looking clean, neat and ready
to learn. Dress guidelines include the following:
• Clothing or appearance that depicts gang affiliations, death, suicide, cigarettes, alcohol, or other
drugs is prohibited. Vulgar, obscene, or violent messages on clothing are prohibited.
• Clothing must be worn to cover the body from shoulders to mid-thigh. (Mid-thigh is defined as:
a student standing in an upright position with arms hanging along the side of the body when the
fingertips are touching the thigh.) Low cut shirts, tank tops, halter tops exposing the navel, and
short skirts are prohibited. Skirts, shorts and dresses must be fingertip length.
• Outerwear such as coats, jackets, gloves, sunglasses, hats and other headwear are not to be worn
in the building unless the student is directly entering or leaving the building.
• Visible undergarments are prohibited.
• Clothing made of spandex or similar material is prohibited.
• Excessively baggy pants are prohibited. Pants must be worn at the waist.
• Earrings are permitted. All other body piercings are prohibited.
• Tattoos are prohibited.
• Chains, drugs, gang and/or cult related jewelry is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to,
chained wallets, studded jewelry, animal choke collars, etc.
• Any equipment used to carry books (including backpacks and book bags) may not be carried from
class to class. Backpacks and book bags must be stored in student lockers.
• Safe and appropriate footwear must be worn at all times. Flip-flops and shoes with wheels are
prohibited.
• Athletic shoes must be worn for physical education.
Students whose personal attire or grooming distracts the attention of teachers or of other students shall
be required to make necessary alterations to such attire or grooming before entering the classroom.

FWIW.. I had pink hair for 2 years in HS. Straight A student, scholarships offered to Duke, VT, and Penn State. I don't think wearing different clothing or having a weird colored hair would change a student's ability to learn..

I had to wear uniforms since I went to Catholic school all the way through. I really didn't mind them all that much (I will say that some of the girls in my High School would roll their waistbands up so their skirts were shorter than they were supposed to be and then unroll them if someone wanted to check the length of their skirts) but I definitely liked it when we got a day off from our uniforms. The odd thing is that my High School did allow nose piercings and tongue piercings.

I think it is a pretty standard dress code. About as close to being uniforms without calling it a "uniform". And as of this year all boys must tuck in their shirts & if their pants have belt loops you must wear a belt.

:thumbsup2 thank goodness our schools don't have dress codes like some of yours or I would have to homeschool!! My 9 year old daughter just had the bottom 3 inches of her hair dyed blue- and even her grandma says it looks really cute!
But as far as wearing pants with belts or snaps or buttons or zippers or skirts, collared shirts, long sleeve shirts or dresses she would have to go to school naked it they required that! She has never been able to wear any of those- never liked hard feeling pants. She had some minor sensory type issues, more so from K-3 but even in 5th she still won't wear pants other than sweat type drawstring pants or cloth type pants with drawstrings. Everyone has to have drawstrings because she needs a 6 in waist and a 8 in length so we can just buy her 8's and pull the drawstrings in tight and they work great. Only store we really shop in is Justice and ALL their clothes have some type of logo on it.

My DD's school has a strict uniform policy and I for one am very happy about it!!! It makes school shopping sooo much easier and this way my little Diva can't fight about what clothes she wants to wear! They can only wear khaki or blue pants/capris/shorts/skirts and either a white, dark blue, light blue or maroon polo shirt. Makes my life soooo much easier!!!

My school instituted uniforms about 7 or 8 years ago. I think part of the reason for the suspensions for non-compliance is because it's the beginning of the year and they want to show that they are serious. If you are too lax in the beginning, kids will start to push it. We had girls the first year that started wearing funky socks and leggings with their uniform. Our colors are navy blue bottoms and yellow tops and these girls pushed it really far. Kids also started with the hoodies. Anything to put their own spin on the outfit.

Before the uniforms, I had to constantly tell many boys about keeping their pants up. I would make them belts out of yarn if they wouldn't keep them up. I had boys that couldn't even play at recess because they would have to run and hold up their pants with one hand.

I agree that they are trying to show they are serious. I just feel like they should be treating all the students equally. HS gets no warnings, JR High gets 3 then a suspension and Elem is getting a couple of weeks to a month before punishment. But thankfully my two seem to be in compliance.

Thank you for the comments so far!

Not strict dress code at all it's pretty lenient. We have wear solid color pants and tops. Tops is in the school colors and pants must be tan. Guess what the teachers have wear the same uniform. How's that for strict.

We were looking at uniforms for the school I teach at. I am against school uniforms, but for a dress code. I found plenty of studies that showed uniforms really don't increase test scores. Improved attendance was the only factor that proved to improve test scores. What a shock!

Our dress code is simple:
No sagging (We saw a video with a boy sagging his pants. He pulled out 17 weapons, including an sawed-off shotgun, from his pockets and waist) :scared1:
No underwear showing - this includes bra straps!
No pajamas or slippers
No headgear, this includes bandanas worn on the head, in the pocket, or tied together as a belt.
No gang stuff
the usual ban on the writing on a shirt, ie no illegal substances, profanity, etc. (Parents, we do understand that Corona is a legal substance for you; however, your child is 12 so he cannot wear the shirt because the substance is illegal for him!)
No cleavage showing
Shorts, skirts, dresses, and skorts must be as long as your fingertips

We do have a gang problem at my school. I will not deny that and neither will the other teachers in the school. Many parents, however, do not believe their child is in a gang, therefore they do not understand why we gave their son or daughter different clothes for the day. Our dress code is about safety. It isn't going to increase student achievement unless it allows for another student to actually come to school because they feel safer.

Interesting that your teachers have the same dress code. Ours do not. The men must wear a shirt with a collar (ties optional) and dress pants. Women pants, capris, shorts to the knees, dresses and skirts must be finger tip length when the arms are to the side. Shirts must not be revealing. So they can wear patterns and logos but the kids cannot. Some parents are saying that the teachers should wear what the students do.

:thumbsup2 I agree totally with you! I get so frustrated with some of the staff at the college where I work when they pass judgment on someone because of the way they dress!! Younger ds has had green hair, bleached hair, bleached hair with a black stripe, and blue hair. Smartest kid in his class. Full scholarship due to an almost perfect ACT score.

Dd's school has gone to uniforms. Khaki or black pants or shorts. Gold, White or Black polo shirts. No logos on anything. Belts worn at all times. White or Black socks. No jackets with pockets or hoods.

OP, sounds like they should just go to uniforms and be done with it. The only thing I really don't get is the neckline of the shirt rule. I have never heard of that one. Before uniforms, ours just said "appropriate" tops and blouses. Sort of left things up to the school personnel.

This makes me feel like my school has no dress code at all. The only rule that i ever see being enforced is the "no chains" rule and occasionally, the ID rule (we're supposed to constantly wear our IDs).

I can go to school in my Rocky Horror Picture Show shirt and ripped up jeans and no one will say anything about it.

All I can tell you is that in middle school I see more ****s and butts hanging out of clothing that any adult can imagine. Tight, short, revealing clothing for the ladies seems to be the norm in my middle school. And 99% of these girls are young ladies, not tramps. The current mode of dress becomes increasingly provocative til it's eye-popping by 8th grade. I have no issue with freedom of choice outside of school but in school I do think provocative clothing is distracting for the girls who have to constantly adjust as well as for the boys whose eyes are popping out of their heads.

Wow really?? Our teachers wear Jeans, t shirts or whatever else they want- I have no issue with that, I don't care what they wear as long as they are good at their job!

We (teachers and staff) are not allowed to wear jeans of any color (the custodians might be able to) or t-shirts.

Our teachers were allowed to until this year when their new dress code went into effect.

This is the dress code for our school district (thankfully it went in to effect 2 years after my DD graduated):

on August 1, 2006 and shall replace in full the
current Policy # 7.303 on the said date.

Law Implemented: §§1001.43, 1006.07, Fla. Stat.
History: New, June 12, 1989
Revised: July 24, 1997; November 17, 1998; June 13, 2001;
January 25, 2006; September 13, 2006; April 25, 2007;
September 12, 2007; June 24, 2009

Each school has 2 color polos + white polos that they can wear. This year the school district closed a couple schools and so those students will be going to other schools. They are going to allow those students to wear their old polos for this year only. After that, they will be required to wear the proper polos for their new school.

They went with "uniforms" because the dress code was not working. There were guys who would still wear their pants below their butt, with a long shirt over it.

That is one detailed dress code. At this point I would rather have something like that rather than the vague dress code we have now.
