It seems that what constitutes a "shortcake" varies by what region of the country you live in. For me, strawberry shortcake is made with either yellow cake or angel food cake with strawberries in sauce smothered all over the cake and then topped with vanilla ice cream.

However, I know other parts of the country use biscuits for the "shortcake" or sponge cake, or even pie crust, and top it with whipped cream, or cream that hasn't been whipped, or nothing at all.

So, how does HDDR make their strawberry shortcake? And what is your favorite method of preparing strawberry shortcake? And what part of the country were you raised in?

Just curious! :flower:

I don't remember exactly how their's is made--but I can tell you it was the WORST part of the meal for us. It reminded us of nursing home food. Yuck! We could not believe that WDW would put out a dessert of this calibar at a restaurant where we were paying almost $400 for our family to dine!

Oh no! That's terrible to hear!

Any other opinions?

For me strawberry shortcake is a biscuit like thing with strawberries on top

Strawberry shortcake for me is yellow cake, fresh strawberries (without sauce) and sweetened whipping cream. I've also had the kind with biscuits, but prefer the first, that's how my grandmother used to make it. :goodvibes

I personally hate HDDR's strawberry shortcake. I don't like strawberries in sauce :crazy2: and Hddr's is like pre-packaged cheap cafeteria-style yuckiness!

Wow, I thought it was very good :) :)

I don't remember how it was only that it did have strawberries and whip cream :) I liked it.

I didn't think it was great, but I certainly thought it was approriate for a dinner SHOW. The price of the tickets includes a great show so I didn't expect a fine dinning type meal. The strawberry shortcake kind of reminded me of the kind you get at Kentucky Fried Chicken in the lil'buckets, but with fresher ingrediants

I remember liking the strawberry shortcake, after looking at it, and thinking that I would not like it. I usually don't like my strawberries processed into that type of sauce. That is why I liked IHOP's strawberry waffles better than almost all other places that served strawberry topped waffles.
I prefer real strawberries, not in any sort of sauce besides their own juice and a little sugar (if they are sour strawberries).

I do think that the food, at such an expensive show/dinner should be high quality, and I was not disappointed in the food, although I didn’t consider it among the very best I have had at WDW.

A shortcake is really a biscuit type thing, but sweeter.
However, so often those sponge cake things are marketed as short cakes that people are getting used to that.

Personally, I like angel food cake under my strawberries, as long as the strawberry mixture is not too sweet. I like the way this cake soaks up the strawberry juice.

Hi all,

I grew up with crushed strawberries and whipped cream over a large split homemade biscuit and my wife makes it that way today. But I really do like the shortcake at the HDD - usually have what is left in the bowl. It is a matter of individual taste, though. I like everything else they serve, too.

Enjoy!!!

::MickeyMo If I remember correctly, I think HDDR's is cake. No ice cream, just whipped cream. DBF and I like it. ::MinnieMo

The HDD strawberry shortcake is definatley not a biscuit on the bottom. It is a yellow cake with strawberries and juice (I'm assuming from a can, was not fresh) and whipped cream on top. Wasn't bad, I guess it's what your used to.
