Stop & Shop deal on gift cards...sort of

If I go into the store and buy $500 in gift cards, I would expect $100 in $10 coupons. If they don't print, I'll just return them. Since I pay with a credit card (gotta get those miles!), won't they have to pay a fee for the charge and a fee for the credit? Plus, I will not be a happy customer. But if I do get the coupons, I will have to make a stink about using them by the expiration date.

This is what I expected also but as posted earlier I only got 1 $10 coupon. They did however give me a $90 s&s gift card when I questioned it. The manager agreed that I it was "limit 1" the ad should state it and he said he was putting a sign with that disclaimer on the gift card area. The cards can not be returned or voided.

I have gone on to purchase 10 more gift cards today(1 at a time) using the $10 coupon each time without problem. It takes more time but it's not a big deal.

They will not refund GC. When I bought a few that were non-participating, I was "stuck". And I did not know they would not trigger the coupon until after I paid. the ones that "failed" to trigger the Catalina, again, were iTunes, Fandango, and Amazon (I think).


I had no trouble using the GC anyway, since they WERE for stores and locations I use, but it was a bummer.

Ok, so I did a test tonight. I checked after work and they had a bunch of $25.00 Disney GC. I went back with my DH when he got home from work. Here is what happened.

There is no sign that says Purchase $50.00 with of GC - get $10.00. This was only in the ad. There was a sign that said you could only purchase one $50.00 worth of GC per transaction to get the special.

I spoke to the manager about what we would get and honestly she was not sure - she said you had to buy it and see what printed out. We go to this store quite a bit and she knows us (not friends or anything but she does recognize us). So my DH purchased two $25.00 gift card - and had to use his Stop and Shop card. He got a coupon printed off for $10.00 our next shopping order. The expiration date is 6/15/2012 - next Friday - one week from today. She said we COULD NOT use this coupon to purchase another GC and we could only use one coupon per transaction. We then did another transaction and I purchased two $25.00 gift cards and got the same coupon - same expiration date. We stopped by CS desk and told the manager what we got. She said if we purchase more GC tomorrow - we should have a different expiration date - most likely next Saturday - one week from tomorrow.

We did purchase $12.00 worth of food so we only owed $2.00 which was nice. We are going to go back either tomorrow or Sunday and purchase another $100.00 of GC and get two more $10.00 coupons. This is not a bad deal - basically for each $100.00 you get $20.00 worth of coupons - I would love to be able to use this to purchase more GC but food is good also.

One cashier questioned whether the coupon could be used towards another gift card, but the guy she checked with (and he checked with someone else) said to go ahead. It scanned at the register every time without issue. I say try it...it should work.

What's funny is that the Catalina says - courtesy of iTunes or something similar. But I can totally see it failing for those few cards

There is nothing that says that you can only get 1 $10 coupon per transaction, nor does it say that there are any restrictions to using your $10 off.

I have a big party here for Father's day and would love to be able to buy all the food and supplies with my multiple $10 coupons!

As I stated before our store had a sign they put up by the gift cards that explained the terms. They said they were sorry but it was not printed in the circular.

I could be wrong about the iTunes cards. It would be helpful if people here could report on which vendors don't trigger the Catalina, but most people here are buying the Disney ones I suppose.

It might have been just Amazon, Kindle, and Fandango. I wish I made a note to myself about it.

If my ad says it starts tomorrow, at Stop & Shop, but is it actually already working now? Or does it start at various dates in different areas?

Will report back on my attempt to get about $1900 in Lowes GC.

My store's sign said "limit one transaction, per household, per day." I bought a Southwest card and my daughter bought a Penneys card. Both triggered the Catalina, which expires 6/16, so it looks like all the coupons expire the same date. The $10 coupon does say "limit one coupon per transaction per day." However, it does not say that it can't be used for gift cards, so tomorrow I will go back and try to use it on another gift card. There were LOTS of people buying gift cards, so I can see the supply dwindling fast. Oh, and I can confirm what another poster stated; it does not appear the gift cards count for gas cards. I'm ok with that, because a $10 coupon is worth more to me than the gas ponts, for which I'd have to spend $100 to save ten cents per gallon.

I hit my Stop & Shop this morning - I got my $50 Disney card and my $10 off coupon. Then I went and bought another $50, used the $10 coupon, and paid $40, and got another $10 coupon. I may try to use that coupon later today at another store, just to see if the one coupon per person thing hits off anything...I also don't know how much up front money I want to spend but I'm loving it so far (plus I'll get $4.50 back in rewards on my credit card for he $90 I spent, so it's like getting $100 in gift cards for $85.50!)

OP here.

Just back from my very long shopping trip. I spoke with both the frond end customer service manager and the store manager. They told me that this promotion is causing a lot of problems, so they were putting up a bunch of signs. I never went back to read the signs, so I am not sure what they stated.

I was told that I could purchase more than one gift card per day, but that they had to be different transactions. So, before I did my weekly shopping, I purchased 3 more $50.00 Disney gift cards and did receive 3 $10.00 off next purchase coupons.

I did my shopping, but when I went to check out, if I wanted to use all of my coupons, I had to split the order. So, I made 7 different orders and used 7 different coupons and still have one left for next weeks shopping trip.

I purchased a total of $95.44 in groceries and only paid a total of $5.99 after all of my coupons (because I couldn't get the products to total exactly $10.00 for each of the 7 purchases).

I did not receive any gas points for the gift card purchases, but I did receive them on my total groceries after all of the coupons.

I just got back from my own trip to Stop and Shop. I started buying $50 gift cards one at a time and using the $10 Catalina to partially purchase the next. I kept going to the end of the line if someone got in line behind me and the head cashier offered to ring them up one at a time at the Customer Service Desk. I was going strong, when my credit card wouldn't go through anymore. I think it is a security limit placed on the card because I had already purchased 9 $50 gift cards one at a time.
So far, I've purchased $500 in gift cards and paid $420! I am going to go back another day and purchase some more.
There is a similar offer starting tomorrow at Shop Rite too!

SWEET! Chase Freedom has 5% cash back at the grocery store through the end of the month too, so I'll be sure to double dip on this action!
I did this last summer when Shaw's had the offer as well.

Great tip about purchasing more gift cards. I'll have to see if my store will let us do that also.

The same thing happened to me today too! They thought someone must have stolen my card to be making those kinds of purchases!

Just read the ShopRite ad, and it says "one coupon per CUSTOMER". Not sure that this means. You can only buy one $50 GC per day, and thus only receive one Catalina per day? Or you can only redeem one Catalina coupon per day? Is is tracked by your shoppers loyalty card?

Went yesterday, I bought one handed the Catalina to DH and he bought one. Today we did it again but utilized the 2nd Catalina from yesterday. We decided to stop tonight and we did it again. So far that is 3 for me and 3 fr DH. We have the same SS card #. Catalina triggered for each one. We were able to use tge Catalina on our gift card purchases. It does not state not to be used on gift cards purchases. So we have $300 and only spent $240. We'll keep doing it till we can't.

Today I bought $1000 in Lowes GC. They did not scan my shoppers card to make the purchase. I got 20 of the Catalina $10 coupons. (I used 5 with my shopping today). My Stop & Shop insists that you cannot use the $10 Catalina coupons on gift cards.

Buying the cards is not pleasant, as lines build up as you plow thru each card as a separate purchase. I was able to convince a cashier who was bagging to open up and do my GC purchases. They make you feel like you are annoying them. I try to chat and keep it light. I really need MORE, but did not want to push their patience. Will go tomorrow for the rest. I have to see if Lowes can TAKE 20 GC on one item first.

Using the Catalinas, in separate orders is easier, because I was able to use the self check out lanes, and split my order into 5 (used 5 today).

I got the 10$ coupon when purchasing the Amazon gift card in Stop N Shop.

Also, as far as enforcement of the rules, I think it depends on the cashier....... I bought 7 50$ gift cards, using the 10$ coupon on the next card as I went along...... I never got off the line, nor changed cashiers.

She was laughing about what a great deal it was.

Then I used the last 10$ coupon for my cold cuts for the week.

They did not have Disney cards though! I am traveling an hour today for my son's baseball game..... I am stopping in every Stop n Shop I see along the way for the Disney cards!
